The Biggest Game Ever (1 Viewer)

No offense to Charger fans, but we all know San Diego will get crushed tommorow.

And that sets up the biggest game in the history of football up to this point in time. I know it's not a Superbowl, but it might have higher ratings than any Superbowl to date. It is also, at least for me, more intriguing and promises more drama than any Superbowl I have ever witnessed. I am not a fan of either team, nor do I dislike either team. I may root for the Colts only because I tend to favor the underdog in these situations. But I am eagerly looking forward to all the talk that will come up this week, all the hype, and the game itself. The regular season matchup was very entertaining, and close enough so as not to give a decisive answer as to what will happen this time. I don't believe I have ever been this excited about a game involving teams that were not mine. Bring it on; I can't wait for this week to pass...

Just another game. I dont think people are giving SD any chance. They have beat the Colts the last 2 times. I still dont like the match up.

Well if San Diego beats Indy, that will be a letdown for me, because I really want to see the other matchup, and I don't think the Chargers have any chance at all in New England. So from a neutral, spectator standpoint, I am rooting big time for the Colts.

In general most people tend to root for the underdog as it is a more interesting story than a favorite going wire-to-wire. Its natural human psychology. http://psychcentral.com/news/2007/12/24/wh...erdog/1699.html

Why Do We Root for the Underdog?

Monday, Dec. 24 (Psych Central) -- Why do people root for the underdog and find underdogs appealing? Researchers propose that those who are viewed as disadvantaged arouse people’s sense of fairness and justice — important principles to most people.

The researchers also found that people tend to believe that underdogs put forth more effort than top-dogs, but that favorable evaluation disappeared when the underdog status no longer applies, such as when people are expected to lose but have a lot of available resources.

In a series of studies, researchers Joseph A. Vandello, Nadav P. Goldschmied, and David A. R. Richards of the University of South Florida tested the scope of people’s support for those who are expected to lose. The researchers were seeking to understand why people are drawn to the Rocky Balboas and the Davids (versus Goliaths) of the world.

Using both sports and political examples, the researchers asked study participants to react to various scenarios presenting different competitors with an advantage or disadvantage. For instance, in one study using the Israeli and Palestinian conflict, the participants were given the same essay about the history of the area, but with different maps to reference — one showing Palestine as smaller than Israel (and thus, the underdog) and the other showing Israel as smaller.

No matter what scenario the participants were presented with, they consistently favored the underdog to win.

I like the Chargers to win that game.

I think they will lean on LT really hard and he will come through. That will keep Manning off the field.

When Manning is on the field, I think they pressure the hell out of him like they did last time. No way he throws 6 INT or anywhere near that but he is going to throw before he wants to. He doesnt like to get hit and he doesnt get hit very often but Manning always has trouble with a 3-4 defense.

Then the next weekend the Chargers will get owned by the Pats and the Pats will be poised for a super bowl domination of whichever team gets there.

If the Cowboys make it there will be tons of talk about the QB's and how the Cowboys are looking at revenge from the last meeting....so on and so forth.

If the Packers win there will be nonstop slobbing of the Favre knob and so on an so forth.

If the Giants win there will be crickets chirping and no one will probably watch the game.

'm sure this is true; at least for me. But I've also noticed the opposite trend, especially in sports. People like to jump on the bandwagon because they enjoy being for winning teams and players.

Biggest game ever?

I don't about all that, but assuming the Colts get by the Bolts, which I think they will...I think they'll beat the Pats if Marvin is healthy enough to be effective.

Looking forward to the Indy/NE game more than any game I can ever remember, including when my Raiders were in the Super Bowl five years ago. Some people overlook the fact that Indy could also have just as easily been 16-0. That sounds silly to say about a 13-3 team, but think about it. They lost to the Chargers on a miracle miss of a chip shot FG by the best kicker in history. The lost to the Titans when they sat their starters for the majority of the game, and their only other loss was to the Pats, when they had a 4th quarter lead.

This will be an epic battle, and I'm saving it to DVD forever. Just hope it lives up to the hype.

Can't wait to watch Bob Sanders fly around in this one.

...and w/o Marvin.Agree...not much being said about the 13-3 defending Super Bowl Champs.

 The Colts COULD have gone unbeaten but I'm not sure they would have had they beaten the Pats. They dont seem to embrace it. The one season they had a chance, they didnt seem to want to. Dungy actually seems to be against it.

Right. The largest market in the country is involved in a rematch of a team that nearly beat the Pats the first time. A Manning running the team. One of the most loyal fan bases in all of sports. You're right, no one would watch.

Yeah, this is going to be a loooonnng week......

:hophead: Why can't we get a 'MARK IT DOWN' in here somewhere too?Seriously does everything have to be 'best ever' or 'biggest ever' or is there just some minute possibility everything isn't a complete extreme?

I'm pretty sure that a Pats Packers Super Bowl would be more interesting than a Pats Colts conference game. That's the ultimate good vs. evil.

the one thing not mentioned in some saying the chargers will be a tough out- who in the hell is Rivers gonna lean on in the passing game? Has Chris Chambers ever done anything to make u think he can come up big in a big game? for many games i've seen of the chargers i don't think rivers even knows if there is anyone besides gate to throw the ball to. more pressure on philip rivers's shoulders can't be a good thing. this may be where they wish they still had Drew

Didn't you know all the biggest evers and best evers have happened in the last 5-10 years?

:) Maybe the best post of the year. Good vs. Evil. David vs. Goliath. Lovable Favre vs. RoboQB. Favre's marries his highschool sweetheart and she overcomes breast cancer. Brady has lots of ******* children. GB takes care of its players. NE cheats. NE is a dynasty going for the perfect season. GB comes from nowhere led by 38 year old Favre, who has broken all the QB records this year. I predict this matchup will be the most anticipated matchup ever if it happens. And just imagine the glory for Favre if he can defeat the invincible Patriots by himself. This will put to rest the debate about who the best QB to ever play the game is. All the records, the ironman, and winning the biggest game in NFL history? Wow. If only they can make it happen.

I think you're reaching to call a potential Championship game between Colts/Pats next weekend, the greatest ever..I don't know your age, but in my opinion, one of the most exciting Championship games( in SB era) was the 1990 NFC game between SF and NYG, the Craig fumble after LT's hit , the faked punt by DeOssie, Montana getting the &@#$ knocked out of him by Leonard Marshall, and the Bahr FG....right up there with the Ice Bowl game, and better than the 'catch' game with Montana/Clark..to date, NFL pundits still call the 1958 Championship Game between the Baltimore Colts and NY Giants the greatest game ever played.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_Championship_Game,_1958

from another historical perspective, you simply cannot overlook the 1968 Jets SB victory and what it did for the NFL..that was one of the biggest upsets in the history of professional sports.

and please, don't discount any of the remaining NFC teams in the SB this year, even if they play NE or Indy or SD..

this *could* be the best SB ever, I mean, what if the NYG/NE game two weeks ago was actually the 2007 SB, how GREAT would that have been to see such an exciting game like that!

so I think next week's game, IF it happens, will be huge, but it will be trumped by what's shaping up to be the most exciting SB of all time ( esp. if NE is in it, at 18-0, playing for immortality ) ..If the game involves the Colts, you have Manning cementing his place in NFL history, and if it is SD in the game, you have perhaps the greatest RB ever, gunning for his first SB title...( by the time LT is finished, he'll own many if not all of the NFL rushing records). You might see America's team back in the SB, and Eli has a shot to make the Manning's the only family to have two SB-winning QB's as sons.

and, if you have Favre in the game, you have one of the best ever QB's playing for another SB victory..and does he retire if they win?

so there is a lot of excitement watching the playoffs right now, and perhaps many historically significant moments ahead!

can't wait for the games today!

Can you imagine the media hype in a Packers Patriots superbowl?

The "greatest team of all time" agains the "greatest quarterback of all time"?

The media machine will convulse in the throws of multiple orgasms for two weeks, and 85% of football fans will be projectile vomiting by the time supersunday arrives.

I don't disagree with any of the posts who try to chide me for a short memory. I enjoyed all of the previous games mentioned, and I'm not usually one of those type of people who argue that the greatest of everything happened within the last five years.

But I think it applies this one time. If the Colts do end up winning today and playing the Pats next week, I can't remember a matchup of such epic proportions. The 49ers Giants game mentioned, as great as it was, did not involve an undefeated team that had previously won three SBs in the decade vs. a 13-3 team which was last years SB winner. It did not feature the two best QBs in the game today, possibly ever. And it was not a matchup with several years of history as the two best teams in the era. The only possible analogy is the 49ers/Cowboys games of the early 90s, and even that doesn't quite match up to this rivalry, IMO.

I also agree that a Patriots/Packers Superbowl, if it happens, will be the most hyped, most watched SB ever, and worthy of whatever words will be written about it. But I don't put it in quite the same category as Colts/Pats, because I don't really hink the Packers can hang with the Pats for four quarters. I believe the outcome to that game if it happens will be determined in the third quarter, whereas the AFC championship game will (I hope as a neutral observer) be a wild ride all the way through just like last year's matchup. That's why it will, for me, be the biggest game ever.

This is absurd. You seriously overestimate how many serious football fans there are. This game (if it happens) will be as compelling a matchup as I've ever seen in a conf. championship game. But it won't draw a single viewer who wouldn't typically watch a football game anyway. The Super Bowl is a worldwide, crosscultural phenomenon. Tens of millions of people who don't even know who Brady and Manning are will watch the Super Bowl because it's an "event." The SB will be advertised to readers with a week's worth of hype in local newspapers in markets where nobody follows football. It will pop up on the radar of people at offices around the country as betting pools start getting passed to them, and parties are announced. No small number of people will watch just to see the commercials.

Pats/Colts would be interesting, but won't transcend sports like the SB.

You do make a good point. Of course, I see things from the eyes of a football fan. I have a feeling, though, it will be bigger than you're suggesting here. We'll have to see.

Biggest game will always be the Super Bowl, regardless of how juicy another matchup may be.

The Indy/NE rivalry reminds me of the Dallas/S.F rivarly about 15 years ago.

Boy do I look stupid. Never saw it coming. Kind of reminds me how the Chargers stunned the Steelers back in 95. Congrats to San Diego! I hope they can make it a good game next weekend. I'm shocked right now. Not a Colts fan, but I was positive they'd win. But...I seem to be more often wrong than right.

I suspect CBS is just as shocked as I am (and probably not so happey either)...

Ah how good it feels to see the chargers going into Foxborough. If I was merriman and the bolts win next week (since everyone is writing them off already), I would go take a dump on the pats logo after the game, since the pats mocked him in the bolts house last year.

But i think they have had enough time to think about how to react after a win - they will probably go right into the locker room with class except rivers - he will run laps shouting at the fans.

Great game....LT and Rivers both out of the game and the Chargers still win. WOW!

Go ahead and laugh at me (I deserve it) but laugh even more at the Colts. They get all the calls their way, (including a TD for the Chargers taken away), they lead in the 4th qtr, Rivers and LT are out of the game, Gates is banged up, and they still lose? At home? Are you kidding me? One of the biggest upsets I can remember!

Well, before the game I believed the Colts were gonna beat the Chargers in a close game... but that's why they play the games. Chargers have always played the Colts tough, they just match up well against them.
