The Biggest Game Ever (1 Viewer)

the one thing not mentioned in some saying the chargers will be a tough out- who in the hell is Rivers gonna lean on in the passing game? Has Chris Chambers ever done anything to make u think he can come up big in a big game? for many games i've seen of the chargers i don't think rivers even knows if there is anyone besides gate to throw the ball to. more pressure on philip rivers's shoulders can't be a good thing. this may be where they wish they still had Drew
Ah, I remember the days of being drunk and getting on the internet and thinking that I was smart and witty...

But I think it applies this one time. If the Colts do end up winning today and playing the Pats next week, I can't remember a matchup of such epic proportions. The 49ers Giants game mentioned, as great as it was, did not involve an undefeated team that had previously won three SBs in the decade vs. a 13-3 team which was last years SB winner. It did not feature the two best QBs in the game today, possibly ever. And it was not a matchup with several years of history as the two best teams in the era.
That matchup had about a decade's worth of history to it. Simms and Montana had been dueling for a decade, dating back to when they entered in the same draft class. Same goes for Lott and Taylor. The 1990 game in particular was a lot like the '07 Colts/Pats game, except both teams started off 10-0, not 8-0.http://www.pro-football-reference.com/blog/?p=402

That 1990 playoff game was the fifth time the teams had played in the postseason in the past decade.

would have been as good as the SuperBowl to watch imo.

who would have guessed that Eli's season would last longer than Payton's.

:lmao:

At least there's no debate on who the better QB is now.

Indy fans can't use the excuse "If Manning had NE's defense he would have just as many superbowls."

Indy's #1 defense got OWNED today by Rivers and VoLUCK, no more excuses colts fans.

I may root for the Colts only because I tend to favor the underdog in these situations.
In general most people tend to root for the underdog as it is a more interesting story than a favorite going wire-to-wire. Its natural human psychology. http://psychcentral.com/news/2007/12/24/wh...erdog/1699.html

Why Do We Root for the Underdog?

Monday, Dec. 24 (Psych Central) -- Why do people root for the underdog and find underdogs appealing? Researchers propose that those who are viewed as disadvantaged arouse people’s sense of fairness and justice — important principles to most people.

The researchers also found that people tend to believe that underdogs put forth more effort than top-dogs, but that favorable evaluation disappeared when the underdog status no longer applies, such as when people are expected to lose but have a lot of available resources.

In a series of studies, researchers Joseph A. Vandello, Nadav P. Goldschmied, and David A. R. Richards of the University of South Florida tested the scope of people’s support for those who are expected to lose. The researchers were seeking to understand why people are drawn to the Rocky Balboas and the Davids (versus Goliaths) of the world.

Using both sports and political examples, the researchers asked study participants to react to various scenarios presenting different competitors with an advantage or disadvantage. For instance, in one study using the Israeli and Palestinian conflict, the participants were given the same essay about the history of the area, but with different maps to reference — one showing Palestine as smaller than Israel (and thus, the underdog) and the other showing Israel as smaller.

No matter what scenario the participants were presented with, they consistently favored the underdog to win.

The article appears in the current issue of the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

'm sure this is true; at least for me. But I've also noticed the opposite trend, especially in sports. People like to jump on the bandwagon because they enjoy being for winning teams and players.
This study would appear to refute the notion of "bandwagon jumping".

You do realize that this post makes zero sense, right? So the Colts defense falters, and that makes Brady a better QB?Got it!The better team won today, period. Congrats go to the Chargers.

Boy do I look stupid. Never saw it coming. Kind of reminds me how the Chargers stunned the Steelers back in 95. Congrats to San Diego! I hope they can make it a good game next weekend. I'm shocked right now. Not a Colts fan, but I was positive they'd win. But...I seem to be more often wrong than right.I suspect CBS is just as shocked as I am (and probably not so happey either)...
The Colts have now lost 3 in a row to the Chargers. This wasn't some longshot Appalacian state game dude. The only reason you should be shocked is becuase you dont watch the Chargers much, oh and nice thread...

Contrary to other postseason performances, I don't think that Manning "choked" on Sunday. I thought he had a good but not perfect game against a very tough and motivated team. But it's still worth noting that the argument that Manning would have won as many Superbowls as Brady if he had as good a defense as Brady is simply false. Manning has had some very good defenses behind him over the years, and time is showing that it's not as easy as "if he had as good a defense, he'd have won as many Superbowls". That argument is maddening because, as we saw this weekend, it's just not that easy.

West, please set up a post where you declare that GB v Pats will be the greatest SuperBowl ever played.........

PS....I think you were right in one prognostication. The NFL, CBS, et all wanted that Colts v Pats matchup....so many calls for Indy it was pathetic......

Watching the game, I was thinking I didn't want to see Indy coming into NE, because too many times this year has it looked like an awful lot of close ( or phantom ) calls go the Colts way. At the start of the 2nd half, CBS showed the holding call that took 7 off the board, along with Dierdorf explaining exactly "why" it was a hold, and in slow motion with a detailed explanation, I still don't see a hold. And not even Dierdorf could explain the no contact PI call. It must be the running near a Colts WR rule that Polian introduced through the competition committee.

Congrats, great game from SD yesterday. They showed a lot of heart and grit. Looking forward to a great AFCC game this week.
