The Black Keys are... (1 Viewer)

... overexposed.
Uh, no. Just the opposite.
 I'd say they're overexposed, too. Their songs are played on the radio all the time, and my mother and sister claim to be Black Keys fans. They also like Britney Spears and all of the day's trendy pop-country artists (Sugarland, et al). When my mother likes something, that means it's as mainstream as it can possibly be.That doesn't mean that the music isn't good, I'm not one of "those guys", but they do seem to be all over the place nowadays.

Dan will sell his music to all comers. Commercials, movies, whatever. They are everywhere. As exposed as any relatively new band on the planet. Moby in 2004 (whenever it was that Play came out) caliber exposed. THough it's possible many people aren't aware that they're hearing the Black Keys/Dan Auerbach.

It's not that I don't think they're a good band. They are. But after hearing a song from Brothers on every other commercial and evening drama in the past year, they're not a band I ever feel like putting on. Also, personally, the blues-rock genre is a little one-note for me, so I tire of it pretty quickly.

Top 5 songs from them?
Id say that probably varies a bunch from person to person with how similar their early stuff especially sounds.I dont think I even have a top 5 and Ive been listening to them for like 6 or 7 years now, but I'll just go with10 AM AutomaticThe BreaksUnknown BrotherSet You FreeGoodbye Babylon

I can live with TBK being overexposed considering how much 98% of the other popular music sucks these days. They really werent overexposed until Brothers was released though.

:goodposting:
Agreed..for one, a lot of the contemporary blues bands sound especially similar when youre only hearing 20-30 seconds of a song, possibly at lowered volume in the background even, on a movie, show, or commercial. At the slower/acoustic TBK and DA would be even harder to recognize as their songs if you didnt already know them. Its unreal how often I hear the bookends from Auerbach's solo album, Trouble Weighs a Ton and Going Home, on TV shows and movies.

Singular sound + exposure = "overexposure", imo

Personally, I think they need to evolve. And soon. Their live stuff, with an actual band, is interesting.

:confused:Attack & Release was a noticeable change, progression, evolution or whatever you want to call it from their first 4 albums. Brothers was a major evolution from even A&R. Im pretty excited to hear what El Camino has in store.

First impression of El Camino is that its a very tight and enjoyable pop rock album without much substance to it. It lacks the innovation and emotion of Brothers, and doesnt have the signature memorable blues riffs of many songs from albums prior to Brothers. That said, its a fun listen that doesnt sag in its quick 40 minute listen. It will surely get a lot of spins for me over the next month and will probably be a huge seller.

Only songs that really stood out to me besides Lonely Boy were Little Black Submarines, Sister, and Mind Eraser....Little Black Submarines is bad ### though.

:shrug:I, too, am a fan.But I gotta figure that an outsider's ear is going to listen to Them Eyes, Thickfreakness and She’s Long Gone and hear essentially the same sound coming from them. It isn't terribly sophisticated or multifaceted song writing we are dealing with here (part of my attractions to them in the first place).

good example of outsider's ear: My Wife. After seeing them do a set that spanned their career, her comment: Every single song sounds the same.:shrug:it is what it is.

Was very surprised to see a Black Keys album at a family friend's house this past weekend. Guy is a life-long bar-band level cover musician, is now in his late 50s, and loves the Black Keys

Might have to give them a listen. Friend is a staunch classic-rock guy -- but as a musician, he'll give some new bands a shot from time to time.

Anyone have the new album? How does El Camino sound?

I still standby this, with Hell Of A Season becoming arguably my favorite song on the album.

They are playing some dates with Arctic Monkeys this spring. That's a darn good concert for people to check out.

I think I still like Brothers the most. I know it was a little commercial, but still quality work. Although I've only listened to the new one once.

Was shocked that this was the only Black Keys thread on FBG (based on the search function) and that it was less than 2 pages.

Can't give these guys enough praise. Great sound.

The latest Cage the Elephant release was produced by Dan Auerbach. If you haven't already give it a listen as you can see some of the influence there. Love that band too.

I enjoy some Cage the Elephant. Didn't know that about Auerbach. Thanks for the heads up. I will give them a listen.
