I certainly wouldn't. I'm very hopeful that CJ will be a solid back but I think the expectations are getting out of hand. I'd at least like to see a couple games to see how he'll be utilized and how he performs once he gets the ball. If he goes out and tears up Jax (very doubtful but I'd love to see it) the hype will be through the roof....

Agreed. I don't think there's any way you could start Johnson over Bush in any league. In a PPR format (where Johnson's greatest value resides in my opinion), it's not even a debate. Bush is a Top 10 RB in that scoring system so he's a Must Start every week. My hope for Johnson remains that he'll produce similar numbers to what Bush produced in his rookie season. I don't expect him to produce the receiving numbers because Young isn't anywhere close to Brees as a quarterback, but I think White-Johnson could be a poor man's version of what we saw from Deuce-Bush two years ago. Johnson producing hit or miss numbers as a rusher, but (hopefully if you're a Johnson owner) catching enough passes each week to make him a viable starter in PPR leagues. In standard scoring leagues, I don't think you can even consider Johnson this week unless you are really strapped for options.

In my primary dynasty I managed to snag both Smith and Johnson with my two first rounders... each week I will be starting one of them as my flex behind Portis. Long term, I'm most excited about Johnson, but I have to tell you that THIS WEEK I'm starting Smith over CJ. Tatum Bell is gone, and while Rudi may eat up more carries through the rest of the year, I just don't see him being a big factor this week having just signed days ago.It's a tough decision, since I think CJ probably has more upside, but he also has a lower floor early on in the season until we see how that shakes out.Just my :(

Wow, I'm in the exact same predicament - Portis as my primary, Smith WAS my flex, and just took a flier on CJ... at first it was a no-brainer (IMO) to start Smith, but in a PPR league - and with everything I've been reading here, it truly seems that CJ will be a "Reggie Bush Jr"... I must say I'm very glad I have him and am anxious to see the kid play in a 'real' game.
 
I know most people are comparing him to Reggie Bush but what about Westbrook?

They are both around the same height 5-10 or 5-11 and 200ish lbs. They both come from smaller schools too.

Now don't get me wrong I know that it's way too early to compare them (Plus I go to Villanova so obviously I have serious man love for Westbrook) but I'm just saying...

 
I figure week 1, it will be 55/45 to Len, if they lose by week 2 60/40 for CJ otherwise 50/50... by week 3, the CJ express should be in full force and ready to go.

Of course in the unfortunate event of an injury to Lenny, CJ3 will be a near must start every week. I'll give it a week and re-assess.

Brian Westbrook is not 5'10". i know a lot of sites list him there, but he's lucky if he's 5'8"

I didn't read the whole thread, but I'll say this:

Last year Lendale got more carries inside the 10yd line than other back in the NFL.

I would expect to see more CJ3 between the 20's, but goal line is still Lendale's Job. I would not expect a lot of TD's from CJ3 this year, but yardage and receptions should be decent.

I think his numbers this year will be a little better than what Julius Jones would post with Marion Barber sharing carries. yes, I know Lendale is nothing near Barber.. but then again, the Titans are nothing near the Cowboys when it comes to putting up points.

 
Sometime, someday, someway, someone will explain to me what is to be gained by backing mediocrity in fantasy football.

Until then, I will continue to be perplexed by the hardcore feelings toward LenDale White. What is to be gained by drafting or using LenDale White?

I fear that I will never understand this mindset. . . .

 
On the fence about starting him over LJ. LJ was was 2.4 but the matchup isn't great (NE). Fresh offensive line, no QB and first game of the season sounds like a recipe for disaster. At least Johnson has a few weapons around that have had some success at the NFL level.

I don't think many people love LenDale White from an FF perspective, but I think their point is that he's going to fill a role that Johnson isn't capable of filling. The fact that White will get 200-250 carries means there's a big chunk of the pie (insert fat joke here) already accounted for. That limits Johnson's upside in non-PPR formats. I guess it's a matter of perspective. If you think Chris Johnson is an every down back then you should expect him to push White out of the picture. If you think Chris Johnson is strictly a complementary type back then you should expect White to get a significant percentage of the carries. I'm in the latter camp. Doesn't mean I love LenDale. Just means I don't think Johnson has the skill set to take his role.

But do you loathe it?I'm not a fan of White, but in large leagues he has some value. We pretty much know he won't be a great back, but until/unless CJ3 shows he can be an every down back, White will carry the ball 20-25 times per game, there aren't many RBs you can count on that with after the first two rounds. I recently nabbed White in the 8th, in a 2 QB league. I opted to take Brady in the 1st and Peyton fell to my 2nd, so I need some points from the RB position.

As a rabid Pats fan, I have no qualms about starting fantasy team players against NE. Today I start Bowe AND Gonzalez against them. Now they may have a better day than LJ, but I unsuccessfully targetted LJ in 2 drafts, and think he will be OK against NE (80 yards plus and reasonable chance for a TD).Vegas said 44 points and 16 spread earlier in the week, i.e. 30-14, so 2 TDs for KC is not unreasonable; who's gonna get em? I'd say 1.5 from passing and 0.5 from rushing...ETA: Chris Johnson is my RB3 in the subscription contest. I was happy to see Merrill Hoge gushing over Johnson this morning on NFL Matchup, calling him an every down back and saying that he will win the starting job soon (a little optimistic IMHO, but still nice to hear).

Seriously though, my prediction is that you will see him have more at least as many receptions as he does rushes. I bet you see him line up at WR/slot today and, at some point this year, I bet he takes a direct snap.

Lendale: 20 rushes

CJ: 7 rushes/ 8 receptions

Totally agree. A person must decide if you are playing to win or playing to lose. In a similar vein I don't understand people who, for example, will say, "I think Marvin Harrison will be back this year, I'll target him. But, if I don't get him I'll grab Anthony Gonzalez fairly early instead." You are either in the camp that Harrison is good to go, or you think he is too old, his knees are too bad, he's too slow and will stink it up, making Gonzalez much more valuable this year.That said, I grabbed Chris Johnson in 3 of my 4 redrafts this year including WCOFF. We also grabbed Anthony Gonzalez and Ray Rice. Swinging for the fences.........
 
I've been hemming and hawing over this for the last week and I've decided to put my faith in CJ3.

I'm starting him over Ryan Grant.

Let's do this thing.

 
Chris Johnson will be getting 60-70% of carries on a consistent basis by week 3.

You have to get the ball into the hands of a guy with this skillset. He's looking absolutely dynamic out there.

Cant be, ask the White owners in this thread, or EBF, they will tell you that CJ cant handle that many carries.
 
Lendale who? The messiah has arrived and remarkably EXCEEDED the hype. I'm absolutely giddy about his prospects, he looks tremendous and this is against a very tough defense.
