The Colt McCoy era upon us (1 Viewer)

With Delhomme and Wallace hurting, McCoy may get the start this weekend against PIT. I know this is a tough matchup to say the least, but he may be the QB of the future in CLE. Thoughts anybody?

If you're a betting man you're mortgaging the house, spending your wife's dowry, and stealing from your offspring's piggy bank to bet on PIT this game.

Some people may laugh at this statement, but I believe he can be a good NFL QB (not just mediocre).

I like QBs with his skill set...smart, accurate, decent arm, athletic, & proven in college. The Browns are assembling a pretty good offense. The have a good OL & Hillis could be a Pro Bowl caliber-type RB (although, he's ailing now with a quad injury).

I'm bullish on McCoy's future.

:goodposting: He was a winner at Texas and definitely has the intangibles. I'm buying.

Don't be surprised if Ratliff is starting on Sunday. Do you really want McCoy going against that Pitt DF on the road right now ? I think not.

That is a fiacole waiting to happen.

Agreed. But thinking long-term do you think he could be an answer at QB for CLE?
There was talk of him being cut by the Browns in camp. He reportedly has looked awful. I would be selling if I were a McCoy owner.
I don't think he was ever in danger of being cut. That was media speculation, IMO.Either way, he looked fantastic in the last preseason game. Like I said, it's probably not a popular opinion, but I like this kid's game. I believe he's a buy if you can get him cheap. That said, McCoy isn't ready to start, but then again, their veterans haven't done anything either. Hopefully, he gets to watch & learn this season.

Let me ask this.

Who has a better shot at ever becoming a legitimate starter, Clausen or McCoy?

I don't know much about McCoy but I have a offer for Clausen and he is terrible.

Mike Holmgren said before the season Colt would not play a single down this year they would treat him like a red shirt freshman.

Don't be surprised if you see Ratliff at QB.

I was ready to roll Big Ben out there to make his season debut, but I could see this being 45-6 with Roeth only having to throw the ball like 8 times.

Yikes on McCoy.

If they trot Colt out there on Sunday he is going to get eaten alive. He might be the QB of the future, who knows, but he is not the QB of the present. 'Future' here means like in 2-3 years.

No. Homer pride is blinding your eyes. Never really thought he had much of a shot at being a good NFL QB
Texas fan I may be. Homer pride? No. Care to explain why you think he doesn't have a shot at being a good NFL QB? There are a lot of QB's who didn't "have a shot" coming out of college. Romo, Brady, Brees, the list goes on. Now before anybody accuses me of comparing them to those three, I AM NOT. Just want to hear rationale.

Bump Finley?

JK, but really... I'm in a deep start 2 qb 12 team league, so every QB counts. Is Ratliff the pickup here? I have Matt Ryan on bye in week 8! I need SOMEONE!

It was being reported that they were developing McCoy to be a "long term backup" I don't even think he's like a starting QB project. He's a backup QB project. With that said, I think it will take him extra long to get the pro game down. Worry still about him throwing the ball deep. He could eventually be a good player, but it is going to take a heck of a lot of intangibles IMO for him to become a starter.

If toughness is one of those intangibles, I'm selling.

He doesn't look too tough.

Players taken in the 3rd round are absolutely expected to eventually compete for starting jobs, QBs included. And I love QBs with his skill set (as I mentioned earlier in this thread).

This kid has a legit chance to be a quality NFL QB. Don't think he doesn't. Obviously, it's not ideal to start a rookie QB, but that's the way it goes.

I do know one thing...McCoy will get a chance to be Cleveland's starter at some point in the future (& not just out of desperation like this coming week).

Wow, McCoy is getting no love here except the OP. While I don't think he will fare well next week against Pitt, I do think McCoy has a chance to be a decent (if not great) QB in the NFL.

He had a great college career at Texas and McCoy seems to play with a lot of heart and passion. He can throw the long ball, plays well in the pocket and can also scramble if pressed. I don't see why he can't flourish like an Aaron Rodgers or a Tom Brady if he plays the right game. My guess observing from the responses here is that most of you guys probably haven't seen him play; hence the low expectations.

Kid can flourish in Cleveland if he can stay patient and play the game. Some college QBs have great NFL careers; some flame out (Ryan Leaf). I do think in McCoy's case he can do well.

The only thing better than his look on the way to see Daddy during the Rose Bowl, were the looks from everybody at Daddy's mansion on draft day; when he finally got a call...from Cleveland. So funny, it was the best coverage of the draft. Please play him against Pitt, please.

Those QBs are extremely rare cases(and Brees was drafted pretty high btw). Sure you're right that McCoy could turn out to be a good QB, but its so unlikely that I think its fair to say any Texas fan promoting the idea that he will is being a homer.

McCoy put up monster numbers vs the dregs on the UT schedule but what scares me about him was his dog games vs the teams such as Nebraska and Oklahoma which had some NFL talent on them. It doesn't bode well for his long range prospects as an NFL QB imo. Also spread QB's are usually well behind the curve compared to QB prospects that played in a pro style system especially in their rookie season although Bradford is certainly looking like a nice exception to that rule.

Regardless of McCoy.. any rookie playing QB, on the road, in a division game, against PIT, is probably a bad play.

I think McCoy can be okay.. just needs rep and experience, unfortunately he is in a fairly tough division to begin with. Only thing I know... PIT in the survivor pool looks like a lock this week.

I watched him his entire career at Texas and though he won he never looked to have the intangibles that make a great NFL QB. Maybe it's his stupid looking face, maybe it's because I'm in College Station, but for whatever reason I just don't have any faith in the kid.

Chip Brown of Orangebloods.com reports that rookie Colt McCoy has been told he'll start in Week 6 against the Steelers.

Brown is a college football guy, but he's very plugged into the University of Texas, where McCoy went to school. ESPN's Adam Schefter also hinted at the same thing in a Monday report. With Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace both nursing high ankle sprains, the Browns don't have much of a choice. McCoy had a terrible preseason and is a disaster waiting to happen at Pittsburgh. They traded into the third round to draft a long term backup QB?

That's 2 rounds better than what the previous regime did.

well, they traded into the third because they think he has some upside. However, most players drafted that late, usually take 2-3 years to develop to a point where they can start. I think its a bit unfair to the kid to be throwing him in there this quickly, but the situation dictates that it must be done. The only other QB's are unable to play due to injury. The only thing I can guarantee is that they will sign or trade for a QB in a hurry. McCoy will start this next game, but It wouldnt surprise me if they quickly relieve him of his duties if he looks like he is not ready.

He didn't have great games as a senior against Nebraska or Oklahoma, but he wasn't horrible especially when you consider what Nebraska did to the Texas Oline. He was also 2 for 2 before getting knocked out against Alabama. Plus, if you look back to his Junior year, he had a monster game against OU posting an 80% completion percentage. Colt didn't just put up numbers against cream puffs.ETA: I think a realistic ceiling for him is Jeff Garcia, not that he's anywhere near that now, but I think he can attain that level of success.
