You may have seen by now, but in yesterday's KC/SEA game KC lined DE Shaun Smith up at FB at the one yard line and gave him the ball, which he proceeded to run in for a TD.

Smith also had a sack during the game, and became the first player to have a rushing TD and sack in a game since the Fridge did it in '85.
Worth noting is that he was lined up in the FB role for two plays in a row from the one yard line the week before (the first was an incomplete pass to LB Vrable and on the second he was the lead blocker for the RB).
Any way, I wanted to point out that he was supposed to be Tyson Jackson's backup and DE, but following his injury after a great game week 1, TJax has been invisible and Smith sees decent playing time and is usually around to rack up an assist at least on lots of running plays. If you're hurting at DE late in the season Smith may be a good pick up with the hopeful upside of a few more goal line carries (Kc doesn't really have the OLine size to just go straight ahead with Jones/Charles in those 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 situations when the DLine knows its coming).

ETA: The play came early in the 2nd quarter with the score tied at 7-7, so they made the call to run that play when the game was still very close. The lobbying for more time on offense could begin this week with offensive coordinator Charlie Weis.
“Now that I have a touchdown, I can finally tell Charlie to put me in the short-yardage package a little more,” Smith said. “I’ll see if I can get the ball more and see what happens. It was fun.”
The nicknames also are beginning to fly around the Chiefs’ locker room — and it’s likely one has stuck.
“Right now, they call me, ‘The Deep Freeze,’ ” Smith said. “We worked on the play and they just happened to give it to me.”
