The (Disg-)race for Number One (1 Viewer)

As a Redskins fan, it's going to be interesting Saturday night. I'd love for the Redskins to knock the Giants out of the playoffs, but on the other hand - winning would hurt our draft slot a bit probably. And god knows - we probably only have a few picks in the draft with all our trading away of future draft picks - so that first one better be a good one!

Any chance Cleveland looks to go QB?
Even though I am not impressed with Frye I see no way Cleveland grabs a QB. That would mean that they gave up on Frye which they haven't yet and they still have Anderson. They need help at OL DL and CB I believe. Pretty much they are bad in all areas on defense and the offense doesn't help them out with the inability to run the ball. Maybe they go OL with the top choice they need a day 1 starter.

Guys, it is just such a Lions Chargers move to take Brady Quinn Eli Manning. I feel bad for the guy already.
Just sayin.
If Matt Millen is running the team, no way they get a Eli-Rivers type deal for BQ.
Why not? Millen pulled a major coup when he traded down from 6 to 7 with the Browns, nabbed Roy Williams, and picked up a second round pick which enabled them to move back up in to the first for Kevin Jones. It's not like EVERYTHING Millen does is stupid. His biggest mistakes have come in free agency, overspending on mediocre players.

Anyone that's played Madden Franchise mode for more than two seasons could have pulled that one off.

I wonder if Millen tried this trade in Madden first, saw the green bar (probably only one) and then offered it up.

1 Detroit 2-13 plays Dallas = Loss

2 Oakland 2-13 .546 plays the Jets = Loss

3 Cleveland 4-11 .533 plays Houston = ?

4 Tampa Bay 4-11 .542 plays Seattle = Loss

5 Arizona 5-10 .492 plays San Diego = Loss?

6 Houston 5-10 .513 plays Cleveland = ?

7 (1)Washington 5-10 513 plays the Giants = ?

8 Minnesota 6-9 .475 plays St. Louis = ?

9 San Francisco 6-9 .496 plays Denver = Loss

10 Miami 6-9 .538 plays Indy = Loss?

Houston vs. Cleveland seems like the only game that would really move things around. If Houston wins and the other teams past them lose, Houston could fall down to the #9 spot. If Cleveland wins, they would move to around the 5th-6th spot.

Oakland and Detroit are both locked in to the top spots, so it will depend on final SOS. Last I heard, there was only a 4 game difference between the win/loss records of their opponents so anything could happen.

This 4-game SOS difference between Oak/Det will likely get bigger, not smaller this weekend. If the current favorites all win, that's 11 more wins for Raider opponents and only 5 for Lion opponents. So it would require a number of upsets to even maintain the 4-game diff, and a huge number of upsets for the SOS to be equalized.

Here's what I have right now, without any tiebreaking:Detroit 2-13Oakland 2-13Cleveland 4-11Tampa Bay 4-11Houston 5-10Arizona 5-10Washington 5-10San Francisco 6-9Minnesota 6-9Miami 6-9
imo those first six teams have the worst offensive lines in football...hmmm, makes you wonder why nobody talks about the importance of a good oline. :moneybag:

The Texans really need to lose this Sunday. If they lose then they should be a lock to draft Peterson, as the Lions, Raiders, Bucs, Cardinals and possibly Redskins/Broncos all have solid RB's. If they lose and get lucky they could even wind up with the #3 pick and a "stud" O-Lineman. Win and they could fall all the way to #9.Come on Carr....I know you have one more crappy performance in you!!!!

 We could have a long separate post on this topic. O-line appears to be a big weakness in the NFL as a whole.

As a Lions fan, I can say that Detroit is the purgatory for QB careers. I don't think there has been any team that has drafted as many QBs as the Lions since 1980, and certainly no team's gotten so little out of their drafted QBs.Since 1980, the Lions have drafted 10 QBs (Orlovsky, Harrington, McMahon, Batch, Ware, Peete, Long, Witkowski, Machurek and Hipple), and I think that Hipple has the most victories as a Lion of all of them. (I'm not sure where to find career victory stats for QBs.) Of those QBs, there was one Heisman trophy winner, and I believe three Heisman finalists (Harrington, Peete, and Long).

I could understand if a QB refused to sign with the Lions.

But as I write this reply, I am starting to realize the same could probably be said for nearly every position, that the Lions have done a poor job drafting. RB and LB have probably been their most successful draft positions (Billy Sims, Barry Sanders, Kevin Jones) and (Chris Spielman, Claiborne, Ernie Simms).

An update from another site I frequent:

It all comes down to this… The 2006 NFL regular schedule wraps up later today and by the end of the day most teams will know where they will be selecting in the opening round of this year’s draft. That certainly goes for Detroit and Oakland which still have to decide which of the two will have the #1 pick at this year’s draft. Both play on the road at 1 PM ET later today with Detroit at Dallas and Oakland playing in New York against the Jets. If they both lose – or both win – Detroit will almost assuredly end up with this year’s top pick. The Lions combined opponents have won 4 fewer games than those of the Raiders this year, a gap that is almost impossible to make up in one week given that the teams have several common opponents. Making it even more likely that the Lions pick ahead of the Raiders if the two end up with the same record is the fact that most of the Lions opponents are underdogs this weekend while the majority of those of the Raiders are generally favored. However, it works out this weekend, both Detroit and Oakland are assured one of the top two picks this coming April as each team has won but twice this fall while everyone else has won at least four games. Meanwhile, there is still plenty of sorting out to do later today in the remainder of the top 10. In fact, today’s ‘big’ game, at least from a draft prespective, is in Houston where the Texans, who would pick in the 6-7 slot were the draft held today hosts Cleveland which would pick third. And the Browns will be in tough given that they will have to go with 3rd stringer Ken Dorsey at QB because of injuries to Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson. Elsewhere, Tampa Bay, which is sitting on the 4th pick hosts Seattle while Arizona, which would pick 5th is at AFC leading San Diego. We’ll have the full, updated first round selection order after tonight’s season finale in Chicago where the Bears hosts Green Bay in what may, or may not, be Packers’ QB Brett Favre’s final game.

After the early games

W L Opp W Team

2 14 138 Oakland

3 13 131 Detroit

4 12 134 Cleveland

4 12 135 Tampa Bay

5 10 124 Arizona

5 11 128 Washington

With 1 game left

2 14 142 Oakland

3 13 132 Detroit

4 12 137 Tampa Bay

5 11 127 Arizona

8 8 118 St. Louis

8 8 121 Carolina

8 8 127 Pittsburgh

8 8 136 Jacksonville

8 8 137 Cincinnati

8 8 146 Tennessee

9 7 136 Denver

Wow, San Francisco won. Looks like the top 9 are set:

2 14 138 Oakland

3 13 131 Detroit

4 12 134 Cleveland/Tampa Bay

4 12 135 Tampa Bay/Cleveland

5 11 124 Arizona

5 11 128 Washington

6 10 122 Minnesota

6 10 126 Houston

6 10 137 Miami

If Cleveland passes on a RB with their pick (they need O-Line help too) then it's possible that A.Peterson could drop to the Texans at #8. I really don't see any other team in the top 7 taking a RB, unless someone trades up.
