The Draft and You (1 Viewer)

This will officially be my FIRST ever live draft (on TV, not in person).

I always had something in the way. School, exams, work....

But this is it. This is the year. I feel invigorated and positive that the Browns will work some magic and make me smile.

In thinking so, I decided to "drop out" of monitoring University exams for students of a totally unrelated field to mine. I figure I won't be of much help aside from babysitting students who need to check their cheat sheets... I mean, piss.

Ever done anything sneaky, greasy or all out ruthless to watch your team build their future? Or do you just have the yearly luxury?

Luxury. Usually Tivo it because of the mindless blabber between picks and rehashing 1st rounders through the entire thing.
I thought mindless blabber and NFL were synonymous?TIVO or DVR'ing (as we call it in Canada) is an option... But I don't want to wait, and want to feel the live excitement without having it ruined... and it WILL be ruined.I also told my wife to leave the house. She's a vegetarian, and I will be eating pizza and wings and wiping the sauce all over my shirtless stomach and chest.I'd rather she didn't witness that

Draft weekend is perfect for knocking out some house work. I'll watch the first 4 rounds or so most years.

One year I painted a couple rooms during the draft. Two years back, I installed new kitchen tile. Work 10 mins, take a 30 second break for the pick and following highlights. Can't beat that system.

Watched it for the last 3 years. Tough considering the time difference but I'm finally off on the Friday this year.

Max has this figured out. Mow the lawn, put the draft on pause, clean the garage, put on pause. Rinse. repeat.

I skipped school to watch my first draft (1984). I kind of wish they still held it on a weekday beginning at 8:00 am. I would definitely take the day off and be tuned in all day.

The first thing I always think of with the draft is how they always show the Jets fans and they HATE the pick, no matter what...I love it and I don't even care one way or the other about the J-E-T-S.

I'm like Max. I usually paint some rooms, work in the garage, mow, etc as i just listen to the periphreal stuff and watch the picks.

I know some people love it but, short of actually being there live, I can't imagine I could sit still ong enough in a bar or sitting around a couch drinking and eating all day while it plays.

A few years ago I watched the first round and then went to a baseball game during the 2-3 round and caught up on the picks between innings.

I sort of like the "blabber" because it builds a sort of fun tension leading up to the picks. If all I saw (or wanted to see) was the picks, I could just go online after the draft and see the picks. What fun is that, though?

every year for a long time, we get together, play poker, drink beer, watch the draft, do a draft pool sheet. Mostly local guys from my oldest and best league. Its sweet because you dont listen to the talking heads and you can work on dynasty deals and talk championships won, etc.

I used to have a BBQ every year. Drinking games. Gambling on who the pick is going to be. The NFL ruined it by putting it in primetime on Thursday and Friday, imo.

To the guys above talking about housework/reno's during the draft:

Sounds like a great idea, but after a year of grading face-palm worthy essays, replying to double face-palm worthy emails (I had a student email me that the stress of the pending union strike caused her to not be able to write her essay), and dealing with everyday BS...

Well, I need a day of just munching a few magical brownies, pizza, wings, beer... and never, ever leaving my couch.

I'm way too jacked.

Agreed on the draft starting on Thursday really sucks.

My favorite draft memory was my Eagles-fan friends all hyped up to draft Randy Moss, only to have the rug pulled out from under them. Yeah Tra Thomas was good to them for many years, but Moss is a hall of famer. One of my friends actually gave up his season tickets that day because he was so disgusted. He's now a Ravens fan. Another one was their shock and disbelief at the Eagles passing on Ricky Williams for Donovan McNabb. I was the lone voice in the room that said 'nice pick'.

The worst memory was having the Vikings take Dante Culpepper right before my Bears did. Instead we got stuck with Cade McNown. I felt sick when that happened because it caught me so off guard because the Vikes had Randal Cunningham who was coming off such a great season.

the thursday draft does suck for us hardcore guys, but Im sure that the NFL is getting higher ratings and the more casual fan watches the first round now, instead of blowing a saturday to do it. Its all about the $ and me and my buds stil have a draft party.

After reading Heckert's quotes from his presser today, I am 110% glad I took the day off.

Might be a beauty

Used to get together with a group of guys from one of my leagues and have a Draft Order Selection BBQ for one of the keeper leagues i commish (we pick the order of the non-playoff teams with an NBA style weighted system). Was a nice afternoon of eating and drinking with the fellas while yelling at Kiper on tv.

Then I had kids and that ended fast.

I miss Saturday draft. We would get a large crew together, tailgate and watch the draft unfold, usually head to the stadium to watch some in the club lounge if we got a ticket hookup. Almost like we were pretending the season was finally upon us. Now that it is on Thursday, maybe one or two friends hit a bar. In trying to reach the masses I think they have missed their core fanbase.

We all still watch it though, but you're right. It used to be an all day Saturday event. It's just not nearly as much fun when you have to work the next day. I'll just have a couple beers after work and watch the first few picks. It stays on well past my bedtime now. :kicksrock:

I've been following the draft for about 27 years. I can remember when it was on ESPN beginning at 8 AM on a Tuesday morning. When I was in high school I would call the local sports department to find out the picks. I'd sneak out of class, telling my teacher I was going to the bathroom. Instead, I'd sneak to the pay phone and make the call. I remember being upset when I found out the Cowboys drafted Danny Noonan in the first round.

By college the draft was an all day event. I did whatever was neccessary to see the entire event.

For my 20s and into my mid 30s I'd get together with a buddy or two, eat some food, chart the picks, and make a day of it.

Now, given that I'm married and my wife's birthday is on draft weekend every year, I'll watch bits and pieces. Having two kids is also a draft blocking experience.

Excellent observation.

I'm a huge draft nerd who has watched/listened to the draft live for about 20 years.

I loooved the draft being on the weekend during the day. I'd go to 7-11 first thing in the morning for a large coffee and a copy of Newsday, the Post, and the Daily News (Jets fan and I'd like to see the final thoughts/predictions of the sports pages).

I liked that it was an all-day football holiday for me and my buds.

It's not exactly the same when you're watching the 1st round at night after a day of work, with another day of work around the corner.

Oh well.

I vividly remember listening to the '95 draft when the Jets passed on Warren Sapp (who miraculously fell to them due to "character concerns") in order to grab Kyle Brady.

3 years ago the day before the draft my brother calls me and makes me this offer:

I have an extra ticket to the draft and a place for you to sleep if you can make it to NYC tomorrow.

I look at my wife and say "it's a once in a lifetime event, right?"

Next day I'm in NYC watching the draft and having a blast. Get my picture taken with Goodell at the end of the day. Great memory

I enjoy the draft more than the Super Bowl (with the exception being when the Bucs won it). I've always been a huge fan of the draft, and for years I would always watch every second of the draft on TV while on my laptop at the same time. Since 2005 I've been going to the draft in New York, and I'll keep going every year. Can't wait til Thursday.
