The Flex Inefficiency (1 Viewer)

(apologies if this has been done, I have much less time for fantasy than I used to...)

I've thought for a while my 12 team, two rb, two wr, one flex league overvalued rbs and undervalued wrs - particularly the second and third tiers of each. I looked at the first six weeks of the season comparing rbs to wrs in the flex. 42 times a rb was played, 30 a wr. The average score posted by a rb was 6.9, a wr: 9.7. A whopping 56% of the time the rb scored less than five points.

RB WR

0-3 41% 10%

3 to 5 15% 23%

5 to 10 15% 23%

10 + 29% 43%

Is this a function of my league? My guess is everyone would like a team with three stud rbs and tries to structure their team as such. It's a good league, by no means expert but same 12 managers for 10 years. So how to capitalize?

EDIT: Non-ppr league which makes the outcome even more surprising to me.

agree 100%. i always try to get 3 rbs and always end up with 3 wrs instead and it often works out much better.

I think it all comes back to BPA during the draft. All 3 of my money leagues are 12 teams and start 2RB,2WR,& 2RB/WR flexes (1 even has a W/TE flex in addition to this). Im sort of stunned by your stat that 41% of the time, RB flexes in your league get 3pts or less.

Its more about the player(s) you have than the position. On 1 of my teams, I have Martin and Ridley, but nothing at RB besides MBush, Tate, Hillman, and Benson (post-injury) after them. I dont even consider any of these guys and go with 4 WR's every week (Mega, Marshall, Harvin +1 based on matchup). However in my other league, I have AD, Rice, McGahee, Spiller, and Leshoure and start 4 RB's every week.

I think typically, at least in 12 team leagues, youre better off with a WR in the flex because usually if you are drafting to fill out your starting lineup, thats how it goes. If you have a RB2 or something that you can start in the flex though, youre definitely better off

It's a lot easier to find a flex-worthy WR off the wire than it is an RB. The top 36 RBs are always rostered, and the guys ranked 37-60 aren't really worth much. But there's always at least one guy in the WR37-60 range that can be picked up and projected to score six or seven points... because you just have to look for the WR3 on some team with a good matchup and hope for the best. Maybe he'll get a deep ball thrown his way or end up with six targets or something. He'll get more playing time than the RB37-60 guys who might not get more than 3 touches in a game unless the two guys in front of him get hurt.
