it doesn't matter where Ive been/lived in the world, there is one ultimate consistency... the grand delusion that a person/persons are good musicians.

in my hometown alone i can rap off 10 bands that have been trying to be signed for 20yrs now... musicians who still think it'll happen.... it won't. you're not good.

... what is it about music that just deludes people to a level that cannot be explained?

Seems like people just following their passion and how they enjoy spending their free time.  If something comes of it, cool; but, if not, they’re still spending their free time doing what they love, hanging with their friends in the band, and maybe picking up a little side cash on the weekend as a performer.  Harmless fun.

This is the way I see it.  Most of these guys aren't trying to get signed and doing it for the love of their art.

The same one that leads community theater actors to think they'll make it in Hollywood, local softball players to think they can hit major league pitching, and aspiring writers to think they've written the next great classic work.

It's not limited to music.

Some people refuse the straight life but seek sustenance...sometimes a dream is all that keeps us alive in this system. To do what we love for a moment and truly believe we are on the cusp of making it is a better intoxicant at times than the finest of escapist drugs or drink. 

No known drug or drink is the phenomenon. Would we were all so lucky to feel it once a week. For most of us, hope lies dead, our soul follows, and all we have is a corpus to truck around without a God or a secular purpose.

This is surely the age of doubt, and we all experience it differently.
