THE I hate to fly thread..... (1 Viewer)

Not sure about Denver to CS, as there are no mountains, but I went to school in SW Colorado and just about every trip home had a low prop first leg across the Rockies up to Denver. Just constant mountain wave turbulence. Flying sideways, feeling like the plane just got slapped by a giant hand, updrafts, downdrafts, all around drafts...craziness. I was brutally hungover and puked like ten minutes into the flight the first time. Only time I've ever thrown up on a plane. Miraculously.

same winds were what nailed me, they just fly off the rockies. same sensations on a jumbo jet. 200-300 foot drops and ascents. anything not securely attached was flying around. ceiling tiles fell, it cured me of ever worrying about turbulence.

Yeah. If you guys need me, I'll be in my car.

and I also have a major crustacean tube problem with my ear, so I inevitably will wind up with a sinus and/or ear infection, like I have now. the worry about the ear problem sometimes causes me to panic use prednisone, which always makes me bloaty and look like

Kid C after a Krispy Kreme run. rinse, repeat.

It would've been general concern, maybe a bit of commotion, but I really doubt it would've been the guy-standing-up-yelling-we're-all-going-to-die scenario.
I had this happen once. We were on a plane that got struck by lightening. There was a loud boom and bright flash of light. Guy in front of me loses his #### and screaming hysterically "OH MY GOD!!! THE PLANE JUST GOT HIT BY LIGHTENING!!!! THE PLANE JUST GOT HIT BY LIGHTENING!!!" ... People went from slightly nervous to sheer panic in seconds thanks to this guy.

Found out later that most planes get hit by lightening at least once per year and rarely (if ever?) does it cause the plane to crash.
We had lightning hit a plane once. Definitely the scariest moment I've had while flying.

We fly a lot and it only bothers me with bad turbulence or weird takeoffs/landings. I usually enjoy the takeoff and landing. One flight, out of the blue, I was sitting by the window looking down during a totally mellow moment when I all of a sudden got nervous. It only lasted for a few minutes (10-15) but was a weird feeling. I thought I was going to develop an issue with flying but thankfully it hasn't happened since.

It's a crazy thing to be doing, flying. You just have to go with it, there's nothing you can do.

it is a very unnatural act and the effects on the body and mind seem grating. you gotta do what you gotta do, but I hate feeling like a

3 yr old every time I go up.

So do these anti-anxiety meds really work for everyone? I've gotten to the point with flying where I need to try something, but I'm skeptical of these. I've tried multiple sleeping pills to no avail. And getting hammered hasn't worked either.

Do you like roller coasters?
with my crustacean, roller coasters and under water stuff are strictly forbidden.

Was on a 5 hour flight twice in the last week. Personally hate flying, but not a phobia. I just watch movies and things like that.

Next time take a Valium or something.

Hate flying, especially taking off. When I get up to altitude I'm usually OK unless we hit turbulence. Landings I like because I know it's over. I try and book nonstop as much as possible. And yes when you have your wife, kids etc. with you as I usually do the stress is even greater.
You have it all backwards. The take off is the safest part (also the most fun . . . all that power and speed right before liftoff).

It's the landing that's dangerous.

I remember talking to a paratrooper one time. He said he'd rather jump out of the plane than land in it. Thought it was safer.

You are the guy that brings your own sheets when staying at a hotel? Might want to relax a bit.

You have high anxiety and have never taken Xanax, Valium, or clonopin? Yes, they definitely work. Everybody's body is different but I'd go with Xanax first.

i dont think i am an anxious person......in fact, i am hyper calm. but The plane makes my mind crap out on me. i just dont like The bumps And turbulence. at 34k feet i am fairly good.

Wow...That's interesting. I've got horrible ear issues too (Artificial ear bones and ear drums due to repeated infections as a kid, caused by chronically clogged "crustacean" tubes). I can't get water in them, but I've got no issues with roller coasters or flying. I'm much more likely to have sinus pain than ear pain from rapid descents.

So you over-think it? Are you a facts and figures person? I know I overthink everything, but I can usually be calmed with facts and figures...air travel is actually VERY safe statistically...would reading about how safe it is make you believe in the concept more?

I don't get this way in any other setting. It's only flying, which I do rarely. And it never used to bother me at all. It's a relatively new phenomenon. Not sure why it's developed, but it has.

I've never been a fan of air travel. forget the stuff involved with getting to and from an actual plane, the actual flight. it's not that I panic, but the total lack of control and thoughts of impending doom tend to creep into my head. lately, with more frequent flying, it's gotten worse. coming out of LAX yesterday morning, the turbulence was so bad I thought we were done and I was in a bad spot. wife talked me off the ledge a bit, but I had 2 great dry heaves in the bathroom. meanwhile, dummies are working on laptops and chatting away. I am the only one with a terrified look. I thought it was real bad......I think no else being concerned makes me even more crazy. I have tried meds, but is got sick from over medicating and don't want to be loopy. liquor doesn't seem an option. anyone in this boat? is this a phobia?
You already nixed my suggestion if liquor is not an option: Bloody Mary's, generally beginning at the airport. Wouldn't say that I'm phobic though--just like to be real mellow when I'm 6 miles high or better.

I prefer Young Frankenstein myself.

That's serious turbulence and the plane was never in danger. This kind of stuff should make anybody scared of turbulence feel better, not worse.
Plane wasn't likely in danger, but passengers are at risk of really getting hurt because they're stupid and don't listen. It amazes me the number of people who stand up and mull about when there's turbulence. The risk of slamming your head on the roof or overhead and then slamming into the floor is very very real.

I was flying a small plane in HEAVY turbulence one time. Hit a major bump, and flew up and hit my head on the cockpit roof HARD. I saw stars for a few seconds. I was the only one in the plane. Scared the #### out of me. I ratcheted the sholder straps down tighter, and returned to where I came from. Since then, I make sure I'm not just buckled in, but buckled in tightly.
