The Legend of Bagger Vance -- Written for Morgan Freeman? (1 Viewer)

Every time I watch this movie it feels like a movie that could have been so good, but for the awful accents and ham handed acting, especially from Will Smith. Am I crazy, or is it totally obvious that they wrote that part with Morgan Freeman in mind, and it turned out that Freeman wanted no part of it, so they had to find someone else to stand in and that's how we ended up with Will Smith?

Actually, Forest Whitaker was originally offered the part but turned it down due to a scheduling conflict.

He would've been amazing in that role.

Well, it was a book in 1995 and wasn't a movie until 2000. I kinda doubt that the author wrote the book having in mind that it would be turned into a movie years later starring Morgan Freeman.

I like the movie but it seemed like Smith was too young for the part, like where did all this magical insight and experience come from?
