The Legend of Bagger Vance -- Written for Morgan Freeman? (1 Viewer)

Every time I watch this movie it feels like a movie that could have been so good, but for the awful accents and ham handed acting, especially from Will Smith. Am I crazy, or is it totally obvious that they wrote that part with Morgan Freeman in mind, and it turned out that Freeman wanted no part of it, so they had to find someone else to stand in and that's how we ended up with Will Smith?

Freeman was like 80 at the time. I doubt he wanted to hump around a bag of clubs.

you know what would've made this movie better?

If Theron and Damon just started totally going at it with that kid watching.

BOOM

"Originally, Redford was going to cast Morgan Freeman and himself in the respective roles of Bagger Vance and Rannulph Junah but decided on casting younger actors instead (Will Smith, Matt Damon)."

I guess Google is my friend after all.

Correctly guessing which of the other 2 black guys they may have cast for that role isn't an accomplishment.

Or knowing the answer before even starting the thread....

Well, it was a book in 1995 and wasn't a movie until 2000. I kinda doubt that the author wrote the book having in mind that it would be turned into a movie years later starring Morgan Freeman.
