The lessons of the British election for us in America (1 Viewer)

A British journalist on MSNBC was just asked if there are any lessons from last night’s election that we should pay attention to here. This was his response:

When centrist voters are presented with a choice between a flawed conservative and a leftist, they choose the flawed conservative.”

I would think that’s pretty clear to everyone, no?

The lesson I took from it is that Lord Buckethead and Count Binface would be preferable to Trump.

If only voters had had a non-sexist, objective view of Hillary Clinton that hadn’t been shaped by nearly 30 years of false or misleading reporting from conservative sources.
Just stop Tim with the massive generalizations again.

She ran a terrible campaign and has done many things that were not misleading. Plus...isn't the narrative here those pesky Russians cost her the election?

“When centrist voters are presented with a choice between a flawed conservative and a very flawed leftist, they choose the flawed conservative.”

There's flawed, and then there's Corbyn.

Forget all that and please answer these questions:

1. Did Hillary lose because she was a centrist?

2, Who has a better chance to beat Trump: a centrist or a leftist?

Hillary lost because she ran a terrible campaign and is not a likeable person. It has nothing to do with 30 years of "false" news about her. She brought it on herself Tim. She assumed she would win. She had no message for America.  She didn't make ONE campaign stop in Wisconsin.

I have no idea who has a better chance to beat Trump. How about we wait to see who the Dems nominate as the candidate.

Democrats picked literally the worst possible candidate available to them in 2016.  Hillary Clinton was a uniquely bad candidate in ways that are extremely unlikely to be replicated again in our lifetime.
The lesson from the British election is that Bernie would have lost also, apparently.

Personally I agree, but that has nothing to do with the British election

The apparent beating that Jeremy Corbyn led the Labor to in the U K election should serve as a cautionary tale for the Democrats as 2020 approaches.

I do think it’s possible that the UK election repeats itself here, in which unpopular party leader Donald Trump massively underperforms fundamentals and drags his party down, losing to the goofy and imperfect opposition candidate Joe Biden.

I don't remember the "lesson of the 2016 election" being that centrism sucks.  Somehow "centrism doesn't excite any base, voters are tired of status quo politics" wasn't the lesson of that election.  I don't remember the media flocking to the idea of leftism being a winning formula when AMLO won either.  By the way, Obama ran as a progressive and won decisively against a fairly popular centrist- where's the "lesson" from that one?

Corbyn was relentlessly smeared as an antisemite, a national security risk, a Russian asset.  Just a wholesale fabrication put forth by UK media.  The corporate establishment makes it a point to ostracize people who actually oppose wars and apartheid in Israel.  As ridiculous as it sounds now, the same thing will happen to Sanders here.  Supporting basic human dignity for Palestinians = "antisemitism" now.  It appears Labour found itself on the wrong side of Brexit as well.

Hard to say Corbyn lost in a vacuum when the papers went into full-scale 'scare the boomers' mode to paint Boris.Johnson. as the safer choice.  Or maybe people really are just falling into a pattern of rightwing revolt and there's no stopping it.  Either way, there's a lot of moving parts there that won't really bear resemblance to the 2020 elections.

The lesson is this.   Better start addressing your country's problems or you're going to get tossed out.

Dems are going to get steamrolled in 2020 IMHO.

That is a lesson of the 2016 election, it doesn't apply to the 2020 election.
I would rather sit through a decade of Obama again than another week of Trump. He has destroyed what little credibility the US had, and if God would show us mercy, He will allow someone else to be sworn in on 1-20-2021. If not, we are doomed as a free society.

I know Joe and Maurile are trying to curtail the "hyperbole" around here.

Do you honestly believe that if Trump is re-elected we are "doomed as a free society?"

I have a feeling you are going to be in a world of hurt then.

She lost because of her. Not because she’s a woman. Her. She ran a terrible campaign and comes across as a very unlikable  person.  Daughter told me the SS absolutely hated protecting her. She treated them like dirt.

2) Tulsi could but she’s never going to win nomination. The rest including grampa Bloomberg will be crushed. Massive landslide.  Book it.

Alex said it, Trump's clearly reading "Dictatorships for Dummies" at this point. Probably even watching Ted Talks on it as well.

He is closer to Superman, just enjoy it while it lasts!
Faster than a speeding tortoise! More powerful than tissue paper! Able to leap tall shadows if given 3 days warning!

Trump is to Superman what pickles are to black holes. There is no comparison. I would vote for Luthor and enjoy it rather than ever vote for Trump. I'm going to enjoy watching him whine and complain about getting his doors blown off next November.

Will you eat crow in here when Trump wins?

In all seriousness, if you really think this, you basically have to leave the country when he wins right?

Nope, but we're off topic now. Time to wrestle this Trump tweet back on track.

Great Britain is in for a very bad time, and while I'm not a particular fan of the EU, it does serve a purpose. They voted to basically reset their economy and international relations for no real reason, Scotland is likely to try for independence again and might actually get it this time. Ireland could become a complete island under the Orange and Green right around their centennial mark as well.

Exactly. Was sexism a part of it? I'm sure it was. But Tim's the only one I've seen here that clings onto it as being a major part of why she lost.

I think we’ve moved away from the point of this thread.

I know all of you Trump supporters think Trump is going to win no matter who he faces. That’s fine; I don’t agree but no need to argue it. My point is this: the Democrats stand a much better chance with a centrist than with a leftist, No true leftist or socialist is going to win the Presidency in this country.

I would think that some of you guys might agree with me on this?

Who? Oh, that guy Otis accused of welshing on a bet? I don't think I am. Just a guy wondering how a nation that held so much promise fell so far.
Like I said, Trump is killing it so just enjoy it while it lasts!  The country is thriving under his leadership.

I agree that Warren or Sanders have no chance, yes.

Anyhow it doesn’t have to be Biden. Klobuchar, Buttigieg, Bloomberg, Booker would all be fine. It’s probably going to be Biden because of his black support. And that will be fine as well.

I hate asking this.  But as a lions fan.  Were you alive in 1991?
Yes, I was 6 years old. Honestly, I don't blame Matt Patricia for this season. I blame Pasqualoni and the injury bug.

I do agree they are on the verge of figuring it out, though. But it is annoying to hear other fans want everyone fired, because we've done that before, and the last time it worked was never ago.

Well you're half right, Trump is indeed killing it, and by it I mean the nation itself. It was Trump, in the Oval Office, with the golf club.
