:lmao: Agree that he probably should be, but I doubt that he is that high.

Honest question, if you polled all of the NFL players, what percentage do you think could name the team he played for as well as the position he played? I'd bet it's about 75-80% if you're lucky.

Can't believe Favre isn't running away with this. Just asked a ton of friends, and only Emmitt, OJ, Peyton, Brady, and Favre were recognized.

The girls recognized OJ, Brady and Favre, in the order of "isn't he in prison?", "doesn't he date Giselle?", and "oo I know Brett Favre, he likes to retire right?!"

Small sample size (20ish) but still something to think about.

Those who don't know the history of the game aren't worth asking. Are we supposed to only remember Emmitt Smith and Brett Favre and the furthest these young guys can go back to is Joe Montana and Lawerence Taylor? What about in another 20 years? No one will remember the name of Joe Montana?

The bolded.... Really silly thing to say. Fame, especially in regards to "most famous" should transcend the game.

Trust me, those who don't know who Johnny Unitas was and who he played for isn't a student of the game. It's pretty clear that names like Jim Brown, Unitas, Butkus are 3 names that transcend the game.

Jim Brown and **** Butkus... those names transcend the game because they took themselves outside of the game and garnered more fame. Unitas isn't the best that played, isn't the best that played his position, and never took his fame outside of the game.

You having him in the top 5 more than likely has you in the minority. The fact that you have him #2 has you standing alone.

It's easily Lombardi imo.

as for players, surprised no one mentioned Jerry Rice.

When Unitas retired he owned every meaningful NFL passing record. He still owns a record that no one will ever break, throwing a TD pass in 47 straight games (compared to Joe DiMaggio 56-game hit streak). He invented the modern day QB and the two minute offense. He called his own plays and was the first true field general. He's arguably the best QB to ever play the game, a distinction not invented by me.

That's nice and all, but it doesn't make him the second, or even one of the top 5 most famous names in NFL history.

Nice and all ... hmm.

It's interesting that Vince Lombardi is running away with the poll, yet people seem to feel that NFL Championships before the Superbowl don't really count. Most of Lombardi's accomplishments were prior to the Superbowl.

Another vote for John Madden. From head coach of the Raiders, to lead analyst on CBS for years, to lead analyst on Fox, to lead analyst on MNF, to his name plastered on the premier NFL video game for two decades, I think he probably has the highest name recognition.
