lots of talk and speculation, didn't see any thing that said who would start where......think it's going to be a dog fight when camp starts.

Keiaho, Morris & Brackett will be the starting LB's in my eyes.

I'd love Freddie to be in the Mike or Will, however I guess nothing's certain this early on. Still, would think Keiaho's speed and skillset be more suited to MLB or WLB than SLB, right?

One thing's for sure; Gilbert Gardiner is rubbish.

I would argue that the Colts currently have the worst crop of LB's in the League. I think Gardner is being given first crack at WLB b/c the position has only one true responsbility (ie. pursue/tackle the ballcarrier). Gardner failed miserably at SLB last year, and the Colts now only have Brackett, Keiaho and Morris to toggle for the MLB and SLB gigs.

If Gardner does start at WLB, it will not be a result of his superior talent. Instead, I think his starting status will be determined through the process of elimination.

If the Colts take a LB in the first two rounds of the draft, Gardner will be a backup and this thread can be deleted. :goodposting:

Tyjuan Hagler might have a dog in this fight too...

The Colts have two picks at the end of the third, I would expect an LB pick from them by the end of the first day.

Good call. I forgot about Hagler. He is probably the fastest of the bunch. However, he's also the shortest plus he played SLB all through college. I guess the darts will be thrown and the positions will be awarded soon enough.Question Bloom...I took a gander at your awesome 7-round mock draft. Great effort, BTW. I know lengthy mock drafts are pot-shots, but it looks like you do not have the Colts taking a LB until the end of the 5th (Quincy Black...who would be perfect for the WLB spot in the C2). Do you think there's a greater than 50% chance the Colts go LB in the first 3 rounds??

It's really hard to say. I would expect they have some guys targetted, and if Black is one of them, they'll have to pull the trigger in the 3rd. The more I hear about Black's stock, the more I think he won't be there in the 5th.

Chances are Gardner will back up both OLB slots. Don't give up on Keiaho even if a draftee comes in at LB b/c Brackett is really an overrated journeyman that is not seen as the MLB of the future (or maybe even the present). IMO, a seasoned cover-2 staff will see Keiaho as a MLB.

Either way, the guy just had a certain electricity about him when he got on the field last year! He could fill a major leadership role that the Colt's D lascks right now.

Not sure that follows after the contract extension, albeit a cheap one, they gave him last season. But, I agree, Gardner is a longshot to have any meaningful role next year. He's been given a shot at this job twice already and hasn't been able to take advantage, whether it be injury or poor play. There'll be competition, but if the Colts don't take a backer high in this draft, I think Keiaho is the favorite to win the WLB job.

I am pretty sure Black will be a late 1st day pick.As far as Gardner starting at WLB for the Colts I find that nearly unpossible. He is not good enough to hold down such an important role in the defense.

Colts | Boiman to compete for starting strong-side spot

Tue, 17 Apr 2007 22:25:39 -0700

Mike Chappell, of the Indianapolis Star, reports Indianapolis Colts LB Rocky Boiman will compete with linebackers Rob Morris and Freddie Keiaho for the starting strong-side linebacker spot next season.

:lmao:

I am not saying this is right. But I have never understood the Keiaho love ...

True, nobody has said this won't be a competition. But, as happens fairly often, the KFFL blurb left out some context...IndyStar

Boiman likely will compete with veteran Rob Morris and perhaps Freddy Keiaho for the starting strong-side linebacker spot.

The dude hits like a speeding bus. How can you not love that?

What makes this "sweepstakes" interesting is the fact that the quality of player is trumped by the actual position in the scheme. Cato June was simply a late-round safety who was converted to LB.

Whether Gardner, Keiaho or Hagler is starting at the weakside, you can almost be assured the guy will have a Top-20 season. Teams will consistently run at the Colts D until they get larger DE's, healthier DT's and better LB's.

Not to mention the fact that every Colts opponent would prefer to keep the ball on the ground, eat up clock, and keep Peyton on the sidelines. More good news for the Colts WLB spot.

I drafted Gardner when he camme itno the league, and I didn't like what I saw of him. Snagged Keiaho as a flyer for just this reason.

Gardner is one of those guys who will be constantly in significant danger of being replaced.

Colts.com

KEIAHO TO REPLACE JUNE: Although Polian did not rule out taking a linebacker in the first round, he said the Colts won’t be desperate to find one in the draft.

Outside linebacker Cato June, the Colts’ starter on the weakside the past three seasons and a 2005 Pro Bowl selection, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent.

Polian said the starter there currently is second-year veteran Freddy Keiaho, and he said the Colts will feel comfortable entering the season with Keiaho as the starter.

“It’s Freddy Keiaho, barring some situation Saturday where we were to get a great linebacker,” Polian said. “And there’s a couple we think could come in and really make a difference for us.

“I don’t know that they’d get to us, but if they did, that’d be a different story. But we feel good about Freddy being able to play there.”

Damn. Freddy's toast.

Gilbert Gardner is released

Colts released linebackers Gilbert Gardner and Mike Labinjo.

Gardner, who was tendered at the minimum level as a restricted free agent, began last season as a starter before being overtaken by Rob Morris. He's only 25 but will likely need to carve out a career on special teams if he hopes to stick in the league. Labinjo was a camp body.
:hot: :lmao: :) This must mean that Dungy likes Clint Sessions and KaMichael Hall in special teams/LB depth after seeing them in rookie mini-camp.

Good call WD! :bye:
Keiaho was a blue plate, mid fall, IDP forum board special served up by Bramel and Bloom, which is not discounting Weiner Dog. I had to come back and add that fact to the initial post. I can recall him bringing brought up in a thread and his prospects for 2007 being batted about. I picked him up...for nothing...off the waiver wire. Now, I will giggle like a wee lad all season or take this great news within the thread and create a sales package to move Keiaho for another player or draft pick. Going to have to sleep on it but I like what I am hearing. J. Williams, Bears, was mentioned in the same thread. Picked him up also and, if you want to get ahead of the game, do the same, while attempting to draft M. Okwo, Bears. Williams should be easy to obtain. Looks like Okwo can be had in the bottom half of the 3rd/top of the 4th in rookie drafts. If you can afford to roster each, lock it up. One of those two will be in L. Briggs slot sooner than later. Bramel and Bloom know things. Being as we are probably getting the annual influx of new IDP readers due to drafts, pay attention. The active posters in this forum really, really, really know their collective stuff. Had you been here at the right time last year you would most likely have D. Ryans on your roster. Keep reading and stay tuned.

Okwo, took him at 6.11 in a draft(rookies only). The plan is if Briggs is ready to go in Chicago he will be one of my cutdowns, at 6.11 it was time for either a huge reward or just a simple cut, it's worth a gamble in the late rounds.

Okwo has been spriuked a bit in the SP .Without hijacking the thread, I think he could be a huge payoff that late in the draft.

Okwo went in the third round in one of my leagues. These guys are good.... very good. The fact I got Poz at 1.16 was nothing short of a miracle in this tackle heavy league. I can only explain that by the shortage of RB's in 16 team leagues. Chris Henry went at 1.8. I took Bush at 1.11.... then Leonard in the second. Rebuilding thru the draft isn't easy... lemme tell ya.

 Is that Australian slang?
Must be. Although I made a typo with it anyway.

I didn't see anyone post this. I don't have a link just read it in the paper. Wondering how people feel about the Indy situation now.

Whoops missed this thread.

this should make Session a good last round gamble in case he were able to take over for June.
