Here's the link...Referees to hold up play

Basically the referees will stand over the ball and not allow the offense to run a play till the defenses have had sufficient time to make player adjustments...this is crap. The defenses already have been limiting the offenses this season...I don't get it. 10-7 scores are not what people tune in to watch. And especially from a FF angle this new rule is terrible. It's not even a rule but the refs are taking it upon themselves it seems to even the playing field.

If we are going to do that then maybe we should distribute the good players evenly in the league. Sure, we should break up the Bears and Ravens defenses because other teams are at a competitive disadvantage. Maybe we should rotate coaches to new teams every year so everyone can enjoy Martyball at least once.

I hate when the league pulls this crap. Fans with high octane offenses are not going to like this either. Fans with teams that have awesome defenses will love it.

Ref: "Wait...that team has a competitive disadvantage...Hey Coach Saban, you only have 4 DBs in the game and they are going to run a 4 WR set...you want us to sit on the ball so you can insert a dime package?"

Coach: "Oh yeah, guess we better do that. Thanks Mr Ref, you're the best"

Ref: "No problem, we don't want anyone to be at a competitive disadvantage"

Isn't inserting 6 or 7 DBs on 3rd and long to cover 3-4 WRs...isn't that a competitive disadvantage against the offense...everyone is double covered.

First of all I never said that.....Second of all, if your going to blame someone in Stripes it will be the Umpire who stands over the ball not the Referee.

But most importantly, you should not "Blame the Ref". What you should be doing is target your anger at the NFL competition committee who create the rules and ask the officials to enforce these types of procedures on the game. The Refs have nothing to do with this.

With that being said, I see you point. Let em play.

In essence, offenses must now allow defenses sufficient time to make corresponding player substitutions.
The offense has rules on alignment, number of players along the line of scrimmage, and strict movement/motion penalties...the defense has none of these (nor should they). So the NFL is now restricting the offenses from operating an effective hurry up? What a load of crap.

Your off my SB Party invitation list. :D

The Defense reacts to what the offense is doing. The defense is not going to play dime if they see a package with 2 TE's and 1 WR. Its a whole lot easier to rush an extra WR onto the field and get him into position then it is to switch a LB for a CB.

Is it a bad thing that the NFL wants to make the game fair for both the offense and defense? NOT IMO!

They are slowwwwwwwly combining football and baseball into one sport.

I have mixed feelings.

I believe that there is some sort of rule in place where if the offense huddles up, the defense must be allowed to get their subs onto the field. So offenses are going to a no-huddle and subbing guys in and out on the fly to take advantage of the defense on the field. This gives a huge advantage to the offense.

Of course, you could just argue that the defense has plenty of time to make substitutions too, they're just not able to make them knowing what the offense has out there. But, the defense can only make substitutions if the offense isn't hiking the ball. So if the defense gets a bad package out there against what the offense has out there, if the offense stays in the hurryup, then the defense will be at a continual disadvantage with no way to rectify it. If the offense is at a disadvantage with the packages that are out on the field, they can slow things down and make their changes. This rule just helps even that playing field.

What isn't clear to me though is whether the clock is running or not at this point. If the ref is standing over the ball refusing to let it be hiked until the defensive players are on the field, what is to keep the defensive players from making long substitutions when they are ahead and the clock is running down?

That's a weak angle.Defenses don't have the restrictions that offenses do, therefore they're able to freelance more than offensive players are. This is just a stupid rule. That's like saying, 'hey, defenses disguise blitzes, but if the offense knows they're going to blitz, we should stop the play, and let the offense bring in another TE because it's not fair.'Boo hoo....bad rule

The rule does not penalize a team using a no huddle offense. It keeps the offense from substituting during the no huddle offense. If the offense subs, then the defense is allowed to as well under the new rule. If the offense does not sub, then then the referees will not hold up play.

Wow, one NFL rule that actually favors the defense. League defenses finally get an opportunity to compete fairly with offenses.

Hold on - they may ban the forward pass next. Apparently there's been too much passing going on out there... :sarcasm:
