The OFFICIAL 2006 Boston Red Sox Thread (1 Viewer)

After thinking things through, I think they need to move Papelbon to starter, bump Foulke back to closer. The Red Sox need another effective starter badly, and I worry that Lester is not ready. If Foulke struggles we can always bring Hansen up for closer duties as needed. I don't think Clemens is leaving Texas, and really don't want to see the Sox sell the farm to get Willis

Matt Clement stat of the day

The league is batting .439/.538/.683 in 41 at-bats against him with RISP this season

Any word on where Youkilis will drop in the batting order when Crisp returns?
I have no idea.. that's what I was coming in here to post. He's been absolutely stellar as a leadoff man:• Highest OBP abmong AL Leadoff Men (.428)

• Among the top in AVG (.314)

• HItting for Power with 5HR, 12 2B and a .927 OPS

• Perfect in the field at 1B so far (1.000 FPCT) while making some outstanding diving plays

It's really tough to say if they will move Loretta down or if they'll let Youk fall past the big guys. I think I'd like to see:

Crisp

Youkilis

Ortiz

Ramirez

Loretta

Lowell

Nixon/Pena

Varitek

Gonzalez/Cora

Another option might be to hit Crisp 2nd until he gets back in the groove, then flip/flop him and Youk.... though think that might only be a good idea if he's struggling in his 20-25ish ABs in the Minors this week.

There is also a great discussion going on over at RSN.net regarding how Speed guys are better utilized when they're not in front of big rakers (ortiz/ramirez) but are better served to be in front of solid contact/doubles hitters (ie Nixon/Lowell). They're suggesting an order of:

Youkilis

Loretta

Ortiz

Ramirez

Crisp

Nixon/Pena

Lowell

Varitek

AGon/Cora

The thinking here is Youk gets on base well... If he hits a 2B he can be pushed to 3B by Loretta... if he hits a 1B he can be moved to 2B with a hit and run (average speed and loretta is good in that role). There he's bound to score from a popup (SAC when at 3B) or HR/2B from the big poppers.

Then you enter the 2nd mini-order where you've got another leadoff guy coming on... with .327 and .302 hitters who have hit 29 doubles coming up behind him.... HERE is where Crisp's speed would be useful as he could likely score from 1B on a well hit double.

If at any point Youk starts to falter in the 1 hole you move Crisp up... but until then, you don't fix it if it ain't broke. Right now Youk is one of the if not the best leadoff men in the game. He's fire hot... no reason to play with that.

Interesting line of thought.. unfortunately Francona has made it clear that Crisp is the team's Leadoff Man when he comes back :(

Francona said Crisp will be restored to his leadoff spot, with Mark Loretta remaining in the two-hole and Kevin Youkilis dropping in the order, despite the fact that he went into last night 13th in the majors in on-base percentage (.423). ``I think Coco's got a lot of value in the leadoff spot, and believe me we value on-base percentage and Youk gives us that and he's done a great job with that," Francona said. ``What Coco brings with his speed is very important. I think it makes Loretta better, I think it makes pitchers throw some pitches they don't want to, out of the slidestep, things like that. Just, again, when we got Coco there was no doubt he was going to lead off."
Very interesting point here...

Either 7 or 8
I think 7 or 8 would be a mistake as hot as he's been. If they want Crisp back in the leadoff spot, why not 5 or 6?
Manny/Ortiz do not always clear the bases, many times they walk, single, double. You want a power threat behind them to make pitchers challenge them, which is where you have your Trots / Lowells of the game. Youks will fill the Mueller spot of old, reloading some people on base for the top of the order

]Youkilis

Crisp

Ramirez

Ortiz

Lowell

Nixon/Pena

Loretta

Varitek

AGon/Cora
I think that's the lineup I'd use if I were the Sox manager. Crisp's OBP is higher than his historic OBP, so we might expect that to drop a bit. While Youklis's will drop, his OBP projects to be very high. Loretta has neither the OBP nor the power to justify a top 4 spot in the lineup.

Another 4 out save for Papelbon. Comes in with runners at the corners and the tying run at the plate.... K.

1.1IP - 0H - 2K Tonight

0.34 ERA - 0.61 WHIP - .182 OBA - 16th SV (in 16 chances) on the Season

:lmao: This is getting downright silly.. he's gonna give up some runs... but WHEN?

One out later, the Red Sox brought in closer Jonathan Papelbon to pitch to the potential tying run in Ty Wigginton, who had driven in four runs during Wednesday's win against the Blue Jays. Wigginton had a quality at-bat against Papelbon, fouling off several offerings before swinging at a splitter and missing for strike three.

"One of the best [splitters] I've seen all year," Wigginton said. "[it] came down and in real hard. It's one of the nastier pitches I've seen all year."
 Best closer in the majors right now...

Interesting Note on Papelbon vs the Yankees:

16AB

1H (cano single)

1BB (jeter)

6 Ks (Jeter, Sheffield, Arod, Posada, Cairo, Phillips)

.063 BAA

.118 OBP

.063 SLG%

.180 OPS

Had to look this one up after last night

Most left on base, game, nine innings, one team:

* AL- 20 New York vs Boston, Sept 21, 1956

* NL-18 (8 teams listed; most recent is Pittsburgh vs Boston, 6-05-51

Tonights Matchup...

Kazmir vs Wells.

This could get ugly for the Sox.
I will be at the game. Last 6 games I have attended at Fenway were winners, including 3 walkoff wins. Just sayin...

Red Sox outfielder Coco Crisp made his first rehab appearance since fracturing his left index finger April 8 and went 0-for-5. Crisp did not play the field but is expected to be out there today before joining Triple-A Pawtucket tomorrow and returning to the big leagues on Monday in Toronto, according to the Boston Herald.
FYI

You gotta be killing me.

Wells is rolling along... 4.1 IP -5H - 1R - 50 pitches... looking GREAT.

THEN, travis Lee lines one off his knee... the one with no cartilage... the one he just had worked on. He's carried off the field. :wall:

wow what a close finish...

Carl Crawford singles on a line drive to left fielder Willie Harris. Greg Norton scores. Joey Gathright out at home on the throw, left fielder Willie Harris to catcher Doug Mirabelli. Julio Lugo to 2nd.

I went to the game last night (Schilling's 200th.)

I'll tell you something. When Papelbon came in, the place was insane. The crowd goes nuts. Flashbulbs like crazy. More than I've ever seen other than when McGwire at Shea was approaching his 70th back in '98. I know Papelbon is the man, but I'll tell you, Fenway is electric when he comes in.

Also, went out after the game and was stumbling home and came upon Hazel Mae at 2:30 a.m. at Mass Ave and Boyleston. She was a little happy but very nice. Her face is okay, but her body is real petite, but her boobs are freakin huge (fake). She was definitely dressed a little slutty.....I liked it.

:useless:

I was just in Boston for the whole weekend and Hazel Mae wore a buttoned up jacket that downplayed her boobs for every NESN segment. My buddies were telling me about the tight shirts she usually wears but I never got a glimse.

BTW. The Boston Hooters is the worst on the planet. However, we did see plenty of hotties at Dillons during and after the game.

Yeah, she hides them on the Sportsdesk set but she does a weekly Red Sox Rewind show that she will wear tight shirts. She wore a black tight tank top. Her boobs were just enormous in it.

Never been to the Boston Hooters. Its near the Fleet Center right? Tequila Rain on Landsdowne has plenty of hotties. The place is pumping and a complete meat market.

1) Jealous about seeing Schilling's 200th. Not a huge milestone but very cool nonetheless2) Hoping to catch a game before papelbon mania tones down (if it does)... gotta get up there.

3) Hazel Mae

Hazel Mae used to work the sports desk for Rogers Sportsnet in Canada, she is awesome.

That said, Halladay on the hill tonight = loss for your Sox.

Riske!? in a tie game?

Big break for the sox there on that foul call...
