Rizzo and Fuentes seem like decent rolls of the dice, but this deal hinges on whether Kelly is able to harness his potential.

Since they are not moving Jacoby in the deal I would like Theo to turn his attention to Werth instead of Crawford. This will probably be Drew's last season in Boston so Werth can take over RF in 2012.

I've also read a rumor that they were thinking of moving Youk to LF if they can get Beltre done. Please God no. I love Youk something fierce but I was in agony when he had to fill in at LF. Brutal.

wow, can't believe they pulled it off. feels like they talk about getting this guy every year and that it's always a pipe dream.

Sox are the clear favorites in the AL East even if the Yanks add Lee and re-sign Pettitte IMO. Adding Gonzalez already, probably soon to add Werth. Or if they add Crawford, they can move Ellsbury. Plus expecting a full return to health for Pedroia and Youk, and some return to form from Beckett. Scary.

I think the signing takes them out of the Crawford sweepstakes.Werth's right handed bat will help balance the offense. Hope the Sox can nab him.

Good.Get the deal done Theo.
Sounds like they just came to an agreement.
:goodposting:  Huge. That was the one deal the Sox needed to make, IMO.Interested to see who they turn their attention to next. I doubt they go after Crawford seriously, and will go into the year with a Cameron, Ellsbury, Drew outfield. I would rather they not re-sign Beltre. His defense will be missed, but Youklis will slide to 4rd with the Gonzalez signing.Would like to see them go after some bullpen help. Specifically, George Sherril.

Any guesses on the contract?

7 years 145 million?

He is going to be a beast. He must be happy to get away from Petco and hit in a very good lineup.

Hmm. Joel Sherman "Press conference for Gonzo from #Padres to #Redsox expected tomorrow. Will be prospects for Gonzo, but no extension -- for now"

No extension. Wow.

They werent going to sign him to an extension now anyways. They just wanted to make sure they could. Want to keep his salary this year on the books day one of the season to avoid the luxury tax.

 They did the same thing with Beckett.Word is, it will be 7 years at $23 million per.

Yes.Frankly I don't care what they do with the rest of their off-season.
Have to sign some middle relief or they are not winning the division. Someone has to bridge to Bard/Paps. Any of Rauch, Sherrill, Crain would be a good start. All Type B FA.

This "no extension" stuff could be tricky with an injured player I imagine. If his shoulder is somehow not right, how do you justify big bucks down the line?

And as a Yankee fan, I'm quite concerned with their discussions about adding Downs, that guy can pitch and he'd be murder on that team.

The no extension stuff for Gonzalez is pretty much BS. It has been reported that he got a 7 year extension in the $150-$160M range. But to avoid luxury tax, they won't announce it until opening day.

But my point is, you can agree to this, and if Gonzo tubes this season, shoulder related or not, how can you justify giving him some mongo deal? And if you announce too early, I wonder what the commish office's perception would be of an attempt to circumvent the salary tax?

Is this now the best lineup in baseball?
It's kind of hard to think of how Tito will line them up but I would guessLF-Crawford2B-Pedroia1B-Gonzalez3B-YoukilisDH-OrtizRF-DrewC-Salty/TekSS-Lowrie/ScutaroCF-EllsburyI would be shocked if he does anything different with 1-5 since that's his favorite L-R-L-R-L lineup. After that it could be a mix of anything. And yes, homer or not I would take that over anyone in the league.

Thats VERY top heavy. I think Papi is gonna be terrible this year also. This better not hurt Liverpool at the transfer window. :lmao:

HT> aahahaa

Color me wicked surprised to wake up to this... I personally think this was an overpay, the guy's OBP is my main concern. BUT it is just money, and not my money.

Excited to see two 50 stolen base candidates next year...

Also, I highly doubt Ellsbury gets moved

Stuff like this is starting to warm me to the deal

Over the last two years, the only position players with a higher WAR than Crawford are Albert Pujols, Evan Longoria, Ryan Zimmerman, Joe Mauer, and Chase Utley. Crawford is ahead of sluggers like Adrian Gonzalez, Joey Votto, and Miguel Cabrera

Why? with Crawford off the market and no one coming to market next off-season, Ellsbury and his rookie contract hold great value. I'm not saying you're wrong but I wouldn't be surprised if they were both shopping him and receiving offers. People talk but there's a lot of baseball folks out there that think very highly of this kid. And let's not overlook what he could do to a franchise if they decided to market him and go after the North American Native American community  :boatloads:

Heard this from two sources: With the Jenks signing, BoSox payroll is actually higher than NYY. But the Yankees still have moves to come. about 1 hour ago via web

I am actually amazed the Yankees did not sign him, that one seemed like an obvious move for them.

His ERA last year scared off some teams, which is great for Boston, since once you look under the numbers you see he did just fine

All stats are for AL relievers with 40+ IP

.368 BABIP (dead last in the league for relievers) and a LOB% of 65.4 (3rd worst) last year, both ridiculous numbers that are almost certainly bad luck. His FIP was 2.59, which is excellent (6th among relievers with 40 IP).

He still struck out 10.42 batters per nine (ranked 5th) while walking 3.08 (a ratio good for 13th in the league) - I will take those numbers any day.
