The Official 2011 Boston Red Sox Thread (1 Viewer)

Oh boy... Gonzo just broke out the injuries excuse on the radio.

"Teams that are expected to go all the way and don't, it's because they get injured."

OOF. Even if it's true, don't say it. EVERY team goes through injuries.

Forget what's happened the past few weeks. Tonight's events ALONE would not be believed if they were in a Hollywood script.

* New York gets off to a 7-0 lead with mostly starters in the game.

* Tampa Bay gets all of it back in the 8th & 9th against mostly scrubs.

* Dan Johnson (.119 average & 2 HRs all year) homers to tie the game in the 9th with two strikes and 2 outs.

* New York has 1st & 3rd with NO outs in the top of the 12th and cannot score.

* Longoria hits the shortest home run imaginable to win the game.

Meanwhile...

* Boston has a 3-2 lead in the top of the 9th.

* They have 1st & 3rd with NO outs and cannot score.

* Papelbon comes on, having saved 31 of 34 this season... AND he's been lights-out.

* He blows the game (double - single) after striking out the first two batters of the inning.

Un.Real.

Francona is completely safe.Bogar is gonePapelbon is goneDrew is goneDice K won't pitch another game for the SoxBeyond that, who knows
Not sure about Tito but he's a good man and he SHOULDN'T be gone, but hearing some Boston sports talk, sounds like his support is tenuous at best. Its the first big ***** in his armour, much like Torre with 2004. It was the first shoe to drop. And last night aside, how can you NOT resign Papelbon? Damn guy was on fumes and by all rights, they should have been tied going to the 10th but Crawford seemed to get a bad jump, or was a half step slow or was running into the lights, who knows?

Is it wrong for me to say that only the Boston Red Sox are capable of such an epic collapse? That it's in their character? That it makes the universe feel like it has restored order? Like maybe now terrorism is over and this silly 04 and 06 nonsense was just about an out of whack decade? Ok maybe that's going to too far. Perhaps.

What a waste of money.$450,000,000 since 2009 and ZERO playoff wins. Ouch.

The terrorists have no longer won. Now if someone would knock the Yankees out of the first round I'd be happy.

That Crawford gaffe is the same exact play he missed Saturday in The Bronx. I thought this guy was +++++++++++ to all the UZR GODZ out there?

AGON is also going to be cannibalized by the nation.
I know there are a bunch of idiot, yahoo, sox fans. But I can't imagine Gonzalez gets any of the heat. The guy just had probably his best year as a pro this year.
I hear ya, but that was a retched post game presser was brutal. Injuries and Jesus? Come on Agon. I base my comments on some Boston sports talk I heard. First he makes his dopey "we WILL make the playoffs" declaration and then does next to nothing to make it happen. Bloom is off the rose with him methinks. Fair or not, he is a face of this demise.

:lmao:felt this one coming a mile away:Parlay (2 Teams) 09/28/11 17:35 ET bet 1u to win 2.8u Result: Wager WonOrioles(Baltimore) +175 ListedRays(TampaBay) -250 Listed:shrug: :banned:
The betting against your team schtick is great.
:shrug:Root with the heart, bet with the head. This team was just too beat up to have any real chance. Many members of the team had already cashed in their chips for the season. Beckett was overheard saying he wasn't too concerned with the playoffs as his wife was about to pop anyday now and he didn't feel the team had enough left in the tank to make a deep run. IMO The Rays have a bunch better shot at hitting the WS than the Sox did. Not saying I'm HAPPY we're not in the playoffs but I'm certainly not surprised or devastated. Just being honest about the situation. To the folks running around beating their chests and dropping "Red Sux" (very original  ) all over the place in here... you guys are wondering why the Sox fans aren't rushing into the thread to see this display? Really? :lmao: Not saying you don't have the right to do all the first pumping and back slapping you want... just don't be surprised when some folks don't want to hear it 3 hours after our season ended in a rather dramatic fashion. That said, carry on. I don't doubt it's a big deal for some of you. Huzzah! :D Any talk of Tito being canned is absurd. The guy is a helluva coach. Boston sports radio is loaded with flip-flopping knee-jerkers. Thankfully Theo and Co do a decent job of ignoring the idiots and run the team with a fairly steady hand. There will be some shakeup but I don't anticipate Tito going anywhere. Drew's gone but I agree with Wilked... he's come up big in a few spots but he's got nothing left in the tank. Paps is nails.. love the guy, but he strikes me as the type who gets fat & happy after a big deal... that and he kinda cash he'll command just doesn't make sense with Bard waiting in the wings. Lackey reminds me of that baseball card you'd rather tear up then get something for in trade as a kid. I've never liked the guy. Tried to be supportive since he came aboard but the guy is a bum. Terribly signing by Theo & Co. Keep the core (Youk, Pedroia, Taco) and work around that. AGon will be fine. Crawford is overpaid but hopefully will be able to get his head right. He showed flashes midseason with a nice rush but collapsed back into mediocrity. Not much we can do. Regardless, congrats Ray fans, you guys once again have a helluva group of young players. Good luck in the playoffs. Take the ALCS and pay for my trip to Bermuda this fall.

Most of the Sawx playahs are spinning.

:2cents: from a Tiger fan:

If the Sox/O's game doesn't get interrupted for a 90 minutes rain delay, Boston keeps its momentum and wins last night's game going away.

If Tampa Bay doesn't rally from seven down against the Yanks WHILE the Sox are watching from the Baltimore locker room, the Sox don't have the air sucked out of them and they have a better chance to hold their lead when their game resumes.

The Sox outfield was already pulled in on the game-winning Orioles hit; Crawford coulda-shoulda made that shoestring catch, but he never would've been close to it if playing at normal depth.

What a night for baseball, and for baseball fans! The Oriole rally was huge -- HUGE! -- but it's only the icing on a delicious cake of late rallies, dramatic home runs and extra-inning nail-biters.

 for the playoffs...

as a Soxfan I think we needed game 163. As fans we need another Bucky Bleepin Dent moment to rally our misery around. We've become the fat cat fan we all used to hate.

AGON is also going to be cannibalized by the nation.I wonder if that is part of Gods plan?
:confused:The guy had a .977 OPS in September. He was the least of their problems during the collapse.Carl Crawford - Lost 150 points on his OPS from last yearTriple Slashed .264/.295/.440 in SeptemberSitting out both sides of a DH against the Yankees in the middle of the monthNot getting to that line drive to end last nights gameThere's your fodder for the nation.

Boston radio is gold of course this morning:

"Get rid of Crawford!! I don't care about the contract!! Just eat the money."

"Trade Crawford for Jason Werth and Lackey for Zito, TODAY!!"

"What is up with the Yankees running Scranton-Wilkes out there last night? Don't they have any pride? Don't they know what they are suppose to do?"

"Fire Theo, fire Terry, fire everyone."

"Be ready to give CJ Wilson 6 years, 180 million."

"We should have kept Beltre at third and Youk at first. We would be better off."

Did you seriously make this donkey ### bet?
God as my witness, I most certainly did.
I hate to go all marshallplan on you, but that is the probably the worst bet I've seen around here. Ever. Please light your computer on fire.

75% of Boston's talk radio callers are morons......And I might be on the low end there. Nothing to see here. AGon is a stud.

 Seems like a pretty good bet to me in hindsight. 1) Boston has been a shell of themselves and were facing a highly motivated O's squad on their home turf. Massive +juice to boot? 2) Tampa Bay has been on fire and they were facing (as has been pointed out in the wagering thread) an unmotivated Yankees squad who would love nothing more than to stick a finger in the eye of Boston. 3) I like to lay down bets like this to hedge my rooting interest when the backing logic supports it. Besides, I've been doing alright lately. I think I'll keep my computer. That, and I'd just cave and use my phone to access the mobile site anyway. :lmao:

A 2 team parlay with a heavy dog and heavy juice is donkey. Sorry. Parlaying anything with heavy juice like that is just vig city. I have no idea, but I assume the spread on that TB bet was what? 80 cents? More?

I think the Rays were -335 to win before first pitch.
Nah, that's what I thought it would be, but it opened at -260 and closed at -220. A lot of Yankee money came in late.
I stayed up wayyyy to late listening to that Boston sports radio show. So tired today but worth it. Loved AGON first saying it was God's will then saying because of injuries that's why they aren't in.That said each caller seemed to try and outdo the prior caller. Gold.

You keep pressing the issues as if you somehow think I care if you think it was a bad bet. I had my lean on the game and I played it. It turns out I was right. This is entertainment for me... spare cash. I play on hunches or to make games more interesting. Call it what you will, It works for me... case in point: last night.

'Bogart said:
Lackey for Zito, TODAY!!"
Can't say I really know Zito's performance of late, but this one may not be such a bad idea. I think all the bad will with Lackey just makes him a "needs to be gone" player, regardless of what you get for him.John Lackey is 32 and has approximately $53.38 million remaining on the final 3.5 years of his contract.

Barry Zito is 33 and has $55.25 million remaining on the final 3.5 years of his deal. Plus he worked well with Curt Young in Oakland (although my guess is he is a goner as well with the September pitching staff performance).

On other fronts, can Youk really be a foundation guy any more? Two seasons in a row with significant time missed. Does the body breakdown continue?
