The ***OFFICIAL*** 2018 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

I am not sure I see how he fits in at all. I wonder if they just view him as a RB. He is smaller than either of the top 2 HB's in Pittsburgh.

Much of what I said there months ago still applies. There's a chance that Rudolph never turns out to be anything more than Landry or Dobbs, but there's also a chance that he becomes a solid NFL starter. I'm fine with spending a third round pick on him, better than fine actually. They HAVE to have a succession plan in place for whenever Ben gets hurt/retires or we're going to be living in the post-Bradshaw years again. Throw as many darts as you need to at that board.
My biggest beef with Rudolph is how much he locks onto his first read.

Either that, or perhaps this indicates a further shift from the base 3-4 to more nickel/dime sub packages where guys like Allen and Edmunds are downhill box safety/hybrid ILBs.
They've actually already been doing that the past 3-ish years.  Playing more and more 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 (where one of the OLBs drops his hand in the dirt) as a "base" depending on opponent.

Possibly and definitely.
I am not in love with the Edmunds pick, but I do not hate it either.  And my initial reaction after thinking on it, and seeing the SPARQ stuff/thinking about his game was "Could they actually be viewing him as a potential Shazier replacement?"  It's not that hard to believe, to me anyway. Plays near the line as a S, plays LB in subs.  Can run, hit and tackle.  Is a good interior blitzer.   Shazier was better in coverage, which is a big demerit for sure, but there are some similarities otherwise.

He is only about 10 pounds lighter than Shazier. He looks like he has the frame to play 10-15 pounds heavier without losing much speed.
This.

Anyway, if you want to feel ok about Samuels, go watch highlights of the 2016 Independence Bowl.  They're all his.

There are Commodores still having nightmares about that kid.

I like the pick. I feel like even with all the skill position talent they have, they'll find ways to get him on the field.

At this point, I think the biggest hole is at OLB. They've got Watt, Dupree, Chickillo, and... Keion Adams ? Unless they re-sign Moats or I'm forgetting someone, they seem awfully thin at the edge.

Do you know if the Steelers met with Darius Jackson from Jax St.?  I like him as an undersized DE who could transition, and teams without 3-4's aren't going to be knocking his door down.

Don't recall seeing his name on any of the lists of prospects they officially met with.

They signed Darnell Leslie in January ("Who?" you ask?  "Exactly", I answer).  Championship!

Yes, Edge is ridiculously thin and is probably the biggest reason I'm not super crazy that they passed on Landry/et al in the first.  S was clearly a need too, but if Watt or Dupree miss any significant time they're in a pretty bad spot (as of April 28th, 2018 anyway).

Are there any FA pass rushers available? If Wilcox gets released next week, they should actually have a couple million to play with to sign some depth.

Maybe Jeff Holland in the 7th? I keep seeing Bo Scarborough and thinking he's a classic Steelers-type bruiser back, but I don't know that he has the speed or agility to be much more than a GL option/plodder.

I think Edmunds might be a LB eventually. I think they use him as a rookie in sub packages at LB for sure.
Yeah, I think the Steelers switched gears when they couldn't get Evans. Now they are drafting bigger cover guys that can be used as linebackers. Not ideal but let's face it, it's hard to find a Ryan Shazier replacement in any draft.

Junior Galette or Elvis Dumerville are probably the best available right now
I don't think Galette would be signed. Dumervil, maybe. He's pretty old for a pass rusher, but if he was willing to sign for a low salary, he'd only have to play a handful of snaps. He can still get to the passer on occasion, even if he is a shell of his former self.

Double dipping at S.

I think we may have been better served to get a LB here. To me, Allen is a similar player to Edmunds, this makes me think he's either a backup/special teams guy or they plan to try to develop Edmunds as a FS, which isn't really his game. Either that, or perhaps this indicates a further shift from the base 3-4 to more nickel/dime sub packages where guys like Allen and Edmunds are downhill box safety/hybrid ILBs.
Maybe you double-dipped,

Maybe not.

It would not surprise me if Marcus Allen moves to linebacker in Pittsburgh. He is TERRIFIC against the run, has absolutely no ball skills or playmaking ability in coverage

Samuels was the RB they wanted. They wanted someone who functions well in the passing game. This is a best case scenario for Samuels.
What is the status of James Conner?

You guys loved him last year at this time.

This year no RB drafted so I don't think their is any pressing injury concerns with James and once again LeVeon is holding out.

How do you see gaming out?

Do they plan to run LeVeon into the ground and call it a day because I don't think a team can franchise a player three years in a row and they seem to be far apart on numbers.

I haven't seen or heard anything on James Conner since last year's draft and last year's holdout by LeVeon.

Seems the situation would have generated some speculation revolving around James Conner so what do you guys think happens?

I would say Conner would be a committee back with Samuels in the case of Bell on extended hold out or injury. I don’t think much of Ridley and Touissant. Conner is the clear early down backup but that doesn’t mean Samuels wouldnt be given a fair chance. Especially seeing as he is a much more viable option in the passing game. I don’t think Bell’s replacement is on the roster right now.

UDRFAs I'm seeing reported thus far...

Greg Gilmore, DT, LSU
Quadree Henderson, WR, Pittsburgh
Patrick Morris, C, TCU
Matthew Thomas, LB, Florida State

Thomas actually has a little bit of traction from that crop, at least athletically.  Very highly recruited out of HS, actually looked pretty good at times in Tallahassee, but never quite lived up to the hype (and got hurt).  Checking out reports from a few services and it seems that they all agree he has less than ideal instincts, but you can't teach a guy that big to move like he can.  If nothing else maybe he is a beast on teams.

I think Barwin still a FA.  Willie Young.  Tamba Hali too.

Pretty much anyone left has some kind of issue though (age, injury, wants too much cash for what they are now or a combination of all those things).

The first two turn me off, the third issue can potentially dissipate with time...

Age doesn't bother me overmuch if we're just talking about a rotational/depth type guy on a short deal.  They've had octogenarian-esque Harrison getting run out there that past couple years, what's the big deal with septuagenarian-esque Hali or Elvis on a one/two year deal? Or the veritablly"youthful" (by comparison) Barwin? :)

Patrick Morris apparently has the some crazy athletic measurable as an interior OL.

Which all come from his pro-day, as he didnt attend (not invited?) the NFL combine. Here is how his pro day results would have landed him at combine...

  • 6'2" at 300lb and
  • did 37 reps on bench (#1 overall at C and #2 overall at OG).
  • 3-cone (#2 C, #1 OG)
  • 40-yard (#2 C, #2 G)
  • 20-shuttle (#2 C, #2 G)
  • Vert Jump (#1 C, #1 G)
  • Broad Jump (#1 C, #1 G)
  • Was TCUs team captain in 2017.
  • Was Guard, moved to Center full time last year.
  • Had an "undisclosed injury" last year. Missed 6 games.
  • PFF gave him 0 sacks allowed, 0 hits allowed and 2 QB hurries allowed in 183 pass snaps in 2017.
  • PFF #11 run block success. (ahead of Daniels 2nd round, Cole 3rd, Allen 4th, Quissenbery 5th round, Bozeman 6th -- all drafted centers)
  • They did not "overall rank" him because of injury and missed games.
Can he block?

Several mentions of him "winning" heads-up vs Stanford All-American DT Harrison Phillips (had over 100 tackles as a DL!) in the Alamo Bowl game (#58 in highlights).

Jarvion Franklin is a back we would have been proud to have in the Cowher era and someone whose profile mimics James Conner a bit. Hopeful about his and Thomas’ UDFA signings.

Also 1st Team Academic All-Big 12

has a 500-pound bench, a 720-pound squat and cleans 450.

Interesting prospect at the least

So why undrafted?  Injury red flags I guess?
from PFF, December 2017

TCU CENTER PATRICK MORRIS

Morris is likely an off-the-radar prospect at this stage, due to him missing six games with an undisclosed injury, but he’s graded extremely well when on the field each of the past three years. In 753 pass-blocking reps at TCU, Morris did not surrender a single sack or a hit, and has been charged with just nine total pressures to his name. His 98.9 pass blocking efficiency rating (two hurries allowed on 140 reps) this year ranks 17th among all FBS centers with at least 100 snaps in pass protection, and his 83.9 overall grade ranks 13th among draft-eligible centers. – @PFF_Josh

and coming off an MCL injury, the Steelers could be quite thin in camp and pre-season
They've got Toussaint, Ridley, and Samuels besides Conner and Bell. I know Bell won't be around and Conner will still be working his way back, but the other three guys need to sort out what the game day RB group is going to look like anyway. They only carry three backs, so those guys are likely to get most of the TC/PS reps anyway.

Toussaint stinks.  If he is in the final mix it will be a great disappointment.

Franklin has a chance to be a serviceable talent. He’s got a better profile than Touissant has ever had. I liked Watson last year, kind of wish they would have tried to keep him around to see if he could have become a role player. I don’t understand why/how Ridley is even on a NFL roster still.

I had no idea RB/FB Jaylen Samuels was so well ranked around the draft world.

Very lofty at DraftScouts, GBN, DraftCountdown, WalterFootball, Ourlads and such.

I still think I prefer keeping Bryant, going LB in the first and Reid in the second, but the more I read about the guys picked, the more I like them. I just worry we are wasting a year at the end of Ben’s career.

They tried to move up for Evans in the first. When that failed, they didn't see a 3 down ILB in the rest of the draft. The more I look at it, the more I think both Allen and Edmunds are going to be de facto ILBs, at least this season, if they see any significant time.

I had never heard of, nor looked at, UDFA signee Ola Adeniyi.  Looks like an interesting player.  Kind of a tweener, and a bit of a one trick pony, judging from the clips I can find.  But the big concern for me, looking at him, would be whether or not he had NFL athleticism.  That's a concern, but he also looks like he's a little soft in his conditioning, with room to improve both body and performance.  He's got the kind of body structure that ought to respond well to an intelligently crafted pro-level fitness and explosiveness regimen.

I like fixable stuff, and I think Ola has some.

  to upside out of the discount bin.  If someone like that can turn into a special teamer who can soak up pass disruption snaps in an emergency, you get a win.  Could he be the TylerMatakevich of the edge?

Possible.  It's not like there's no opportunity there - as discussed, EDGE is a thin position as we stand right now.

I think I'm in the minority but I actually thought the draft went alright. If we had gotten one of the top 4 ILBs then I'd consider it knocked out of the park, but after they all went we had to make do. 1 month ago people were absolutely crazy over some of the players we grabbed, usually that means they like the tape but then start rethinking things when other players test better in metrics. For the most part I trust the tape unless someone tests incredibly poorly (Jarvis). People mocked us Rudolph, Washington, Marcus Allen, and Terrell Edmunds in the first round at different points this offseason, so should we be that upset? If the draft read the following a month ago I think people would have been happy with it, and not much has changed:

  • 1 - Mason Rudolph
  • 2 - James Washington
  • 3 - Marcus Allen
  • 3 - Terrell Edmunds
  • 5 - Jaylen Samuels
  • 5 - Chuks Okorafor
  • 7 - Josh Frazier
When the Steelers were on the clock at 28 the talking heads were saying we could go Rudolph and that they wouldn't hate the pick. Even if you think Edmunds is a reach (which I definitely do) the overall draft doesn't seem that bad. We didn't get any linebackers, which is going to hurt, but maybe the Steelers FO knows something we don't and they have a plan other than Williams/Bostic/Matakevich, probably involving one of the big bodied safeties they drafted.

I was surprised with how the draft turned out, but I'll do my best to reserve judgement. I didn't like the Watt pick last year, I was yelling at the TV that we should have taken Rueben Foster. After this past year, I'm pretty happy with how things turned out, even if Foster would have been the ideal replacement/compliment to Shazier.
