The ***OFFICIAL*** 2018 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (2 Viewers)

No one is gonna mention Tomlin should be fired for the free kick, high school teams know to cover the kick yet Tomlin fails again.
Odd time to call for Tomlin's head.

Steelers on 3 game winning streak, offense is rolling, defense is coming together, and they lead the division.

FIRE TOMLIN :lmao:

I have a bad feeling about the game against Baltimore next week, and it's 100% my fault. I'm going to the game, so they're going to lose.

It didn't use to be that way. I traveled from Baltimore to Pittsburgh with a friend in 2009 to see the Steelers eek out a win on a late FG.  I got to attend the game where Polmalu dove late in the 4th and knocked the ball out of Flacco's hand to seal the Steelers win. That was doubly sweet because I got the tickets for free from a Ravens fan (they weren't as happy).

In 2011 my luck changed. I blame the Thanksgiving game, even though that wouldn't happen for a couple seasons. I think the football gods knew that I was going to skip family Thanksgiving to see the Steelers take on the Ravens. I traveled to Heinz field and saw a heartbreaking loss. Instead of staying the night and driving home in the morning, I just drove straight through the night fueled by sadness and anger.

2012 I wasn't able to attend a game, but 2013's infamous Thanksgiving game and the Tomlin sideline scoot were one to remember. Loss #2 on my conscience.

2014 got to go see the rivalry again and witness a game where the Steelers failed to score a TD. 0-3 since 2011.

2015 I had the honor of seeing us lose to RYAN F***ING MALLETT! 0-4

2016, another loss, but I've come to expect it at this point. 0-5

2017, my father in law offered me free Ravens/Steelers tickets because he's a big Ravens fan and was unable to go. I said no. We needed the win too bad. I didn't go and we swept them last year.

2018, I purchased Ravens Steelers tickets on September 27th. We proceeded to lose to them on the 30th. I didn't attend so I won't add that to my total, but I think it's pretty clear what happened. My friends and I got tickets at a steal of a price and were all able to attend something together for the first time in a long time since everyone is busy now. I should have known better and said no, no matter how sad it would have been to pass up.

I'm sorry fellow Steelers fans, but I fear my record is about to tick up to 0-6. Maybe the football gods will break the streak, I sincerely hope they do.

fyi..from Rotoworld

"

Ben Roethlisberger has a fractured left (non-throwing) index finger, but the Steelers do not expect him to miss any time.

Even on the non-throwing hand, that is far from ideal for a quarterback, but coach Mike Tomlin did not seem concerned at his Tuesday press conference. Big Ben will undoubtedly get in some limited practices this week. He will be a lower-end QB1 against the Ravens' elite defense.

Oct 30 - 1:06 PM"

Bell will sign after today and then work into shape over the next two weeks. Then he will start off playing the switzer role and then we will go from there.

Some trades going down near the deadline, but haven't seen anything suggesting the Steelers are making moves.

DT to Houston, and Golden Tate to Philly.

Awfully quite in here after a huge win.  A few observations:

1.  Conner is a legit stud RB.  If/when Bell comes back, he needs to get the majority of the work.  What a luxury we will have if Bell comes back and is motivated to contribute.

2. Defense playing respectably.  Nice knowing you Artie!  If I"m the opposing team, I throwing a ton of bombs against the Steelers D.  More often than not, this secondary will get called for PI.

3.  This division stinks and normally I would say that the Steelers should easily win the division.  Unfortunately their schedule ahead looks pretty brutal.

4.  Ben is playing at an elite level.

5.  I have no faith at all in Boswell at this point.

6.  Very few complaints about Tomlin (and I was one of the complainers earlier in the year).  Overall I think he's doing a good job this year.

Big win against a team that was ready.  The play calling is so much better overall especially on D but we need another player to keep us fresh as we were getting tired late in the game which gave Flacco time to throw.

Washington looks like the next Sammie Coates.  His ball awareness is just not there.

as far as the pass d  I guess I’ll take a few pi’s to go with a few stops.  Our guys are at least in the play now.

THE STREAK IS BROKEN! I finally saw another win in-person. And it feels great. Hearing the Ravens' fans moan and boo when Flacco didn't notice 2 wide open players for TDs, or threw at the feet of wide open players was excellent. That said, against a legit QB like Brady or Mahomes, there would have been a lot more completions.

We barely won against a team missing both starting tackles, I think we played down to them, but also it was a slowed down game with lots of running. An 8+ minute drive will keep the scoring low.

I'm so happy we won, but there were frustrating moments. Like when Edmunds didn't even try to get his head around and bulled over their WR for PI way down field. Or when they did 100% the exact same thing to AB in the end zone and we didn't get the call.

Or when the refs tried to give the Ravens a pick 6 on a play where Vance was clearly 100% down. The refs overall were atrocious yesterday, I hope we don't get that crew again.

Dobbs looked great on his 1 play, I was shocked they let him air it out. I think the Ravens were too.

Conner looks great, but there's some head scratching times when they pull him. There was a drive where Samuels played the whole drive, all 3 plays of it. Conner didn't have a crazy work load, at the time he had like 12 carries for 76 yards or something. It seemed like they were pulling him just to pull him, and it backfired.

Also, when we're winning by 7, we don't always have to play like we're losing. Ben aired it out over and over when our RB was averaging 8 ypc. How about we give him a chance to put it away and keep the clock rolling. Not ultra conservative, but not 3 passes in a row please.

Overall, I'm happy we won and it put us in the driver's seat for the division. Let's not screw it up. We can't have a let down game on Thursday against a Carolina team that's playing really well right now. Keep up the focus and the energy. Sack the crap outta Cam.

Also, Washington looked ok yesterday. He was open a fair amount, had 1 bad drop and 2 nice catches. He looks like a typical rookie, not a superstar like Juju, but not a scrub either. I think that next year he'll be a very solid #3 WR, we just have to hope that AB and Juju stay healthy.

About that crew (from Tribune Review)...

The initial call of a turnover on that McDonald play referenced above was atrocious. It was a dreadful miss. For those who say replay should be abolished, that’s why it can’t be. Because those brutal calls that need to be overturned still need a mechanism in place to right the wrong.

Also, Craig Wrolstad’s crew needs to figure out what pass interference is. I don’t have a problem with any of the pass interference calls that were thrown against the Steelers in that game.

But I do when you compare them to calls that weren’t made against the Ravens’ defense. The Steelers’ defenders were called for everything. The Ravens’ defenders were called for very little.

That’s in line with the reputation of Wrolstad’s crew. Credit my WDVE pregame co-host, Dale Lolley, for catching this one. Entering kickoff, the refs you saw yesterday had called only 38 penalties against the home team this year, but 69 against the road team.

Sunday, the visiting Steelers were flagged eight times. The homestanding Ravens, five. It was 8-3 until Baltimore’s final garbage-time possession.

Just one comment about that Vance turnover call.  It was an atrocious call but I think refs are instructed to call anything close to a turnover as a turnover given that it will be automatically reviewed.

There was one PI called against the Steelers that I thought was pretty horrible but otherwise the calls were probably legit.   It is funny how long Flacco has relied on the PI calls to move the ball.  He's been throwing up rainbows and hoping for a PI call his whole career.

I live in FL and was watching the redzone channel because the game wasn't on locally for me.  Anyway, based on that limited viewing it seemed like the Raven might be picking on M. Burnett - is that true?  How much did he play?  I know he's coming back from a long term injury, maybe he's still getting up to speed or whatever.  What are some thoughts about Burnett?

As a Steelers fan who lives in Baltimore, I love primetime games because that means I can watch them without going to a bar. Knowing that the Steelers Jags game was Sunday Night I made plans to attend something at 1pm.

It just got flexed from 8pm to 1pm, so now I can't even watch them at all, or DVR the game, since the Ravens play at the same time. And because it got flexed, they can't flex the Pats Steelers game to Prime Time, which it should have been.

I dislike "the powers that be" right now.

watched the game on usatvnow. (http://watch.ustvnow.com/guide)

They have a free plan and one of channels they have shows all the Ravens games (think it is CBS - Baltimore)

You just have to "live outside" the US.

Surprised that game got flexed considering it was a rematch of a high scoring playoff game.   I guess the Jags record being a 3-5 is the culprit.

Yeah that is smart against us.

our new guys are at least running with the receivers but not turning around and locating the ball.  If they can just get turned the wr will have to make at a minimum a good catch in traffic and we are unlikely to get the pi.

like Hilton did on that end zone throw.  If he were 6’1 and more athletic he’d probably be a pro bowler.

Should probably get prepared for 12/9 also.

or are you saying that each team can only be flexed a certain number of times?

"The Torrey Smith Strategy."

I am glad he decided to play football instead though ?

I believe that each team can only be flexed a certain number of times, but I'm not 100% sure about that. That might only account for teams being flexed out of the 1 or 4 pm slates, not out of the Sunday night slate. I'm still hopeful we'll have at least this Thursday and our 1 other late game.

I looked on NFL.com and didn't see where there are any restrictions on a team being flexed out but there still could be some unwritten rule.   Looking at the 12/9 schedule I think there are a few games that are more intriguing than the Steelers-Raiders.   I think we get flexed again...

I think we can get flexed out, but might not be able to get flexed in because CBS can protect games. So I'm not sure the Chargers, Pats, or Saints games can be moved to prime time, even though they are better matchups.

Ah,  makes sense.   I guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks

The theory pervading news right now is that the Steelers don't want Leveon to show up. That they and the NFL are behind the recent NFL report that Leveon would have to be tagged at the QB rate next year, and that the report isn't necessarily factual. Thus, the Steelers convince him he doesn't have to show up, but still can tag him at the ~$14 mil rate next year. Basically tricking him into thinking he doesn't need to show to accrue a year. It's an interesting theory, that I'm not sure I buy.

He's in Pitt, why go back to Pitt if he's not going to show up? That sounds like a waste of his and everybody's time. But at this point, who the heck knows.

Hey, he's unemployed. The poor guy had to reduce his cost of living so he cut his vacation short and went home.

We've got a really tough rest of season, especially if certain teams can turn things around.

  • Panthers - They're been playing tough, depends on if we can keep Cam contained, stop any splash run plays, and get our offense clicking.
  • Jags - Their D hasn't shown up yet, but if they do they can be dominant. Also, Fournette will change their team 100% if he's healthy.
  • Broncos - They're not good, but we often play poorly in Denver. I expect this game to be closer than it should be and could be a tossup game.
  • Chargers - They're really good. I'm glad we play them at home, but this game is going to be hard fought. Hopefully Joey Bosa isn't back.
  • Raiders - They suck, but we're playing them in Oakland. They've spoiled us before when they've sucked. If we don't win this game, we don't deserve to make the playoffs.
  • Pats - Best team in the AFC. We have the talent to beat them, but they get the upper hand every time due to coaching. I think this game comes down to poor time management, or a botched challenge, or a terrible ref call, but I expect us to lose.
  • Saints - Best team in football right now. That could change by week 16, but this is going to be even harder than the Pats game. Also, if we somehow beat the Pats, I expect a letdown game. If we somehow beat the pats and saints, this could set up for a Superbowl rematch.
  • Bengals - Andy Dalton. We should win, especially if AJ Green eventually goes to IR. Hopefully by Week 17 our playoff spot is settled, I'm hoping we're locked in to spot 1 or 2, but more realistically I think we could be locked into spot 3 or 4. If that's the case, rest lots of starters so the Bengals can't injure them.
Realistically, and somewhat pessimistically, I think we probably go 5-3 down the stretch and end the year 10-5-1 which is good enough to win the AFC North and maybe the 3rd spot in the AFC.

Again I do not understand all of the secrecy.   If you're in town why not go to the team office with your agent and discuss the situation?

Panthers: I agree this will be tough.  I think Steelers may be somewhat healthier and playing at home on a short week is an advantage.

Jags:  They came out the gate looking like they could be the best team in the AFC but have stumbled badly and Bortles has been awful.  The Steelers defense has been better against the run this season so there is that and also both losses last year were the result of costly turnovers.  If the Steelers can avoid that I think they'll come out on top.

Broncos:  Not worried about this one which means I probably should be.

Chargers:  This IS going to be a tough one.  Glad it is at home -- hopefully the weather is cold and lousy

Raiders:  the Raiders are the worst team in the league.  As you said if we can't beat them we don't deserve the playoffs

Pats:  what can you say other than Brady owns us?  I will say that they didn't get the upper hand in coaching last year.  That was a win if not for the infamous James call and an easy pick thrown by the GOAT right to Sean Davis but dropped.  The Pats just seem to have the Steelers number.

Saints:  Should be a shootout so will probably turn out to be a defensive game.    Seriously this should be a fun game to watch.  Hopefully the Steelers get an early Christmas gift

Bengals:  Certainly a game that looks to have a lot of playoff implications.  If the game is a must-win for the Steelers I think they will.   The Bengals seem to fold every time there a meaningful game is played between these two.

Looking forward to a good Thursday night game.

Our run D vs Panthers Run O.   Strength on strength

our pass D vs pants pass O.   Weak on weak although scrambling cam may threaten our pursuit

our run O vs panth D.   ?  I think we run on anyone but those LB’s.....

our pass O vs panth D.....    they will need to force a TO

kicking game......let’s hope it does not come to that.

it should be a good game.  If both teams play well I’d expect the under.

if it gets sloppy we might win big.

Last I heard Center Ryan Kalil is a game time decision.   If he can't go that would be a big loss for the Panthers.

For the Steelers only Gilbert and McCullers are out.

50% chance at home, 50% chance of Fat Dogs, the Steelers bar at the corner of Holden and Spring Garden.

I'll have at least one Panthers fan with me.
