The ***OFFICIAL*** Washington, DC thread (1 Viewer)

On a points per game basis, the Capitals are doing their best since the 10/11 season.

09/10 -- 1.476 pts/game

10/11 -- 1.305 pts/game

11/12 --1.122 pts/game

12/13 - 1.188 pts/game

13/14 -- 1.098 pts/game

14/15 to date -- 1.254 pts/game

The goal differential of about +.5 goals per game would be the best since the 09/10 season (where they were over +1 a game).

The biggest diffence I see with how Oates and Trotz run a system is Trotz wants an aggressive forechecking system to take away time and space from teams where Oates was more of a clog the defensive zone and hope for a turnover to create offense.

Trotz also has them taking away passing lanes in the neutral zone better and also has them blocking more shots and clearing the front of the net better so Holtby has a clear look at shots coming in.

Just looking back at the 09/10 season they were a great offensive team but ranked 16th in goals against. The advanced stats showed they were a great possession team but once forced to play a strong defensive system they struggled and got bounced by the Habs who basically took away any space they had and cashed in on the mistakes they eventually would force them to make.

Thanks guys. Good stuff here.

Last night on the radio call Walton talked about a greater effort to muck things up in the neutral zone this year. Has that been a significant change this year or was he just filling up dead air?

Anything to keep an eye on between now and the start of the playoffs, like say for example seeding preferences, or guys who need to show anything in particular?

Love John Walton and usually listen to his call over the tv broadcast even though it does lag behind because of the delay the station uses.

The neutral zone has been a huge improvement over what Oates was trying to do.Oates gave teams way too much space and they normally entered the offensive zone without much effort. Now under Trotz teams are finding the passing lanes are being taken away more often and they are being hit more which forces turnovers. It really is night and day the way those two coached a defensive strategy and how to take away scoring chances.

Biggest key come trade deadline will be if the try and move Green who will become a UFA at seasons end. With how he's playing I would think he sticks around and possibly takes a slight cut in salary to continue playing here but with his minutes and role both reduced it will be interesting to see how this plays out.Another key will be what kind of forward they can add to the roster.Trotz has hinted numerous times he thinks they need a piece or two to finish the puzzle.Clearly the top line RW to play with 8 and 19 has been a huge issue all season with a number of players trying to fill that void.Burakovsky has the skills to be a top 6 forward but he is just a rookie and Trotz may not trust him,he also loves Tom Wilson but again it comes down to trusting a kid which could be a tough call.

I see them adding a piece if the price is right but I don't expect any blockbuster type of deal unless Green gets moved.Laich and Brouwer could be moved or possibly even Ward(contract numbers)but they seem to be the type of guys Trotz loves but if it means bringing in a top line guy they might just do it.

I fully expect them to add another goalie to backup Holtby as well.Peters has been pretty much terrible and can't be trusted.

I haven't watched them much, but I do see a team that is playing more "together" than they have in years. This is key to any playoff run.

My main memory of recent Caps teams is Ovie attempting to beat all 6 guys on the other side of the ice by himself.

Add in a defensive scheme that seems to be working, and I have high hopes that they'll advance to the second round this year.

You think any of these pot companies are hiring mid career MBA types? Cause I bet whatever is about to happen will be fascinating. It'd be fun to be in the mix.

 Go to the job fair and see I guess. I'm curious too but I don't think I really have any relevant skills, plus I'd imagine that I would have to, you know, do some actual work if I got a job at one of these places.

Yeah, I have no real clue if there would be any potential fits for me. I wouldn't be a good budtender imo. Or if they could use me. But they probably could.

One of the guys in the lawyer thread (Sinn?) is heavily into the new pot industry as a lawyer in Washington state. The problem here, of course, is that there are no regulations to advise on. They could hire me as in house counsel, but in certain respects my advice would be worth no more than consulting a Magic 8-Ball.

Kayaking over the Potomac’s Great Falls in mid-summer, when the water is warm and low, seems terrifying. Kayaking over Great Falls in February, when the Potomac River’s 32-degree water is high and roaring over ice-coated rocks, seems downright crazy.

A routine photo shoot of Great Falls after our latest snowstorm quickly turned into a photo shoot of four kayakers who shot the falls then kayak-surfed the waves below. It was fun to watch but I was cold photographing from above; I can only imagine how it must have felt plunging through the icy river water and catching river spray in the face when the temperature was below freezing.

To leave work early or to not leave work early? That is the question. Weather doesn't sound too bad, but I don't like the thought of snow, sleet, and freezing rain falling around the time of the evening commute. I've had too many 2+ hour commutes and even one that was about 8 hours a few years ago.

Not sure I've ever seen someone go over the falls. (And I still haven't with that crappy camera work in the link.) Many times when I go there, I see the people paddling into the falls but never going over.

Crazy to do that in winter. I assume they have some really protective clothing on, but still.

Updated info indicates this afternoon may not be too bad:

Update at 12:10 p.m.: An area of light sleet (with some rain and freezing rain mixed in) has developed and will zip through the region over the next hour or so. It is neither heavy enough nor long-lasting enough to cause problems, but use caution in case a slick spot or two forms.

  • Precipitation – a mix of sleet, freezing rain and plain rain – this afternoon into this evening should generally be light and scattered
  • From the Beltway and points south, temperatures from 32-35 should rise safely above freezing – meaning few impacts from this precipitation; the afternoon and evening commute should be fine.
  • In our colder areas from around Leesburg through northern Montgomery County and to the west side of Baltimore, a few slick sidewalks, side roads, and driveways could develop, but major roads should stay ice-free.

Thursday is going to be full-on shutdown day. 6" for most of the region, turning from sleet/freezing rain to all snow sometime around sunrise.

I think this afternoon will be totally fine though.

I've heard earlier on the changeover. More like 3 or so.

Post from good NoVA weather guy on Facebook.

Very Dynamic Winter storm on the way for Wednesday night and especially Thursday morning. Could see a period of very heavy snow Thursday morning similar to what we saw 2 weeks ago. I think in general 4-8 inches for the area but would not be surprised if somebody ends up recording double digits again (Hopefully Leesburg :) ) The big question is the timing tomorrow night of when the light rain flips to sleet and then how long it sleets (we hate sleet) before it turns to Snow. I believe Thursday morning when you wake up, it will be ripping snow. Then we are in the deep freeze through Saturday morning. Could be Friday closings too as bus stop temps are near single digits. Timing ways..the flip to sleet may start around midnight or so tomorrow night from west to east.

Jay's Wintry Mix is awesome! More accurate than the Doug Kammerers, Doug Hills and Topper Shutts of the DC area.

Like him a lot!! Especially since he is focused on Loudoun, where I live.

I live very close to the Loudoun/Fairfax county line, so I listen to him a lot as well.

I like teleworking, but this is now my third day in a row and it drives me a bit crazy to not get out. I planned to go in today, but traffic looked horrible this morning and it sounds like the roads suck. Not much chance of really improving during the day since it's going to stay so cold. Warmer weather on the way, though! Looking forward to Spring.

Maybe set up shop at a coffee joint to work out of?

Roads out here were pure suck at 8:30. Even main roads were completely covered with packed ice/snow. Basically passable, but saw a couple get stuck on hills at traffic lights.

Not allowed. :kicksrock:

What totals did you guys get?

Around 7" here with a good coating of ice under it.At least the snow was nice and fluffy and made for easy moving.

I was okay getting in this morning from Alexandria. Drive-in was as easy as it is on a government/non-work holiday. My street wasn't plowed, but roads were fine once I got to the main road.

I took the metro in as the streets by me in Arlington were pure ice and driving didn't seem like a great idea. Of course the metro had long delays too. I took the opportunity to walk down the Mall a little bit- it looks awesome covered in snow.

I'm in N Arlington and had no trouble getting to Vienna via car. Pavement wasn't visible but I thought the crews did a good job. Though from what I'm reading other parts of Arl are a mess.

Washington blvd literally had 1/2 inch of ice on it by me when I left this morning - it was tough to walk across let alone drive. There were cars on the road but they were all doing 5mph.

Public WiFi not secure enough?

That might be the reason. Not sure, though. We're only allowed to log into our virtual desktop and work on confidential stuff from our home.

The reappearance of the Trader Joe's Thread brings up my major hatred of that company. Why isn't there a store further out in NoVA than Reston? Don't they think they'd make a dime or two in Leesburg? Or at least Sterling?

what is the go-to tourist agenda for a rainy weekday (this coming Tuesday)?
The Smithsonian museums are the best bet for a rainy day. You'd have to be outside to get from museum to museum, but they are all in a cluster.

Touring the Capitol could work that day too.
