The ***OFFICIAL*** Washington, DC thread (1 Viewer)

Streetcar was a stupid, backwards idea in the first place. Probably best to cut their losses.

(John Oliver probably could have included the streetcar renaissance in his railings against infrastructure spending last week.)

The new head of DDOT says the Streetcar might never open. Unreal.
Yep, it's been a disaster. I'm no transportation expert, but I'd guess that the value is in building a system of streetcars. If the larger system is in doubt, then I wonder how helpful it would be to have just the H Street portion.
I don't know much about H Street, but why can't they just use the same sort of "streetcars" that run from King Street Metro to the river? Those are fantastic for getting around Old Town.

Also, out of completely random curiosity...how many of you guys remember the 15 Minute Club and the Insect Club?

Was trying to explain 15 Minutes to my wife the other day and realized how odd it was.

You see, it was a buffet-style cafeteria during the day, but it had paintings of space aliens and Pink-Floyd-like villains in gas masks on the walls and ceiling and there was a 15x15 room in the very back where they'd put terrible bands and you were stuffed in so tight you couldn't breath and you went deaf. Plus the main room of the cafeteria was a dance floor where they showed Speed Racer on a big screen TV. And there was a two-table pool room.

As you know, that's just a bus made to look like a "trolley" or "streetcar". Anyone interested in local transportation discussion should check out http://greatergreaterwashington.org/. They are definitely very pro transit and pretty much anti-car (although I think they'll claim they aren't), but still some good discussion and information. One of the regular contributors there has his own site where he discussed streetcars vs buses.

Does the H St corridor have that much more demand than King Street? Seems like the best arguments are volume-based. Again, I haven't been over that way much since it was developed, so I'm flying blind.

Definitely a booming area for businesses and for the neighborhoods bordering it. A lot of houses being flipped around there and I think some larger condo/apartment complexes are going up. Plus, this is supposed to be the east end of a line that runs along K street and to Georgetown. Here's the full system plan.

OMFG. I was just thinking about this place. I used to go there all the time circa 1992 when I was right out of college. I worked all around McPherson Square and would go to the cafeteria for lunch (best cornbread ever) then go back for happy hour.

Going there made me feel like I wasn't rapidly becoming a total sellout in pursuit of money and a career. And once I was drunk enough not to care, I'd go to Ha'Penny Lion because that's where all the good looking paralegal girls were

Oh wow... I worked at 15th & L from 1990 to 1994 and we used to go for HH all the time. And I got a pass for two to get in free too, so used to go all the time with friends. No doubt the bar/club I spent the most time in in my life.

On my phone so writing short for now but my first job was at 14th & L. Only building on 14th that had an overhang, so all the hookers clustered around it on rainy nights. Would walk in the next morning and the maintenance guy was hosing soiled rubbers into the gutter.

Worked at 1101 15th (NE corner of 15th and L) from 89 to 99."It's a small world after all!" ;)

Those days living in DC in the early 90s were some of the best times of my life. I worked first at 14th and L, then at One Thomas Circle, and finally at 15th & I.

As mentioned above, would go to lunch often at Sholl's Cafeteria, then go back for happy hour when it turned into 15 Minutes. Sometimes on Friday, I would have a beer with my lunch at the Post Pub and feel like a total renegade. When Notte Luna opened downstairs from my office, it was a big deal, and then Georgia Brown's arrival across McPherson Square heralded the Clinton era, just like Red Sage was the archetype of Bush I.

Back then, that side of town was definitely not very happening. The Hotel Washington was just a couple of blocks from my last office, and back then the rooftop bar was kind of rundown and sleepy and old - the kind of place you'd sometimes see middle-aged guys wearing tuxedos to have a drink on their way home from a function. We loved going in there a little late and having the place largely to ourselves.

Farther east, I loved the Old 9:30 Club. and drinking yards at the Tiber Creek Pub, like it was a normal thing to do - can't imagine what I would think if I saw someone drinking like that in a restaurant today. Hardly ever went to Georgetown, after spending most of my high school (Charing Cross) and college summer weekends there. Was it $1 drafts at Garrett's on Thursday nights? I can't remember why Thursday night at Garett's was such a huge thing, only that it was.

I lived in Old Town for most of that time - seemed to end up late night in the basement bar of 219 (at 219 King Street) several times a week. We were also at the original location of King Street Blues the night it opened and spent a ton of time in there.

Moved away when I was about 25 and got married soon after, so those days definitely have a special place in my memory.

Any craft beer drinkers in here? My family is opening a brewery in Dulles. It has been a really long process, but we finally put beer in the fermenters this week. That means barring any more unforeseen delays we will be having our soft opening in 3 weeks or so. Big grand opening party in May. I've been going back and forth helping to get this thing going for almost a year now. Anywho, thought I'd pass that along in here. For more info check out our Facebook page and feel free to ask me anything in here.

Nittany (or anyone else), do you know any good food trucks that like to do breweries?

Good stuff congrats! Not a huge craft beer drinker and Dulles is a bit of a hike from Arlington but will keep you guys in mind if I'm out that way and/or have some free time in May to attend the grand opening.

I've been following along in the beer thread. Looking forward to checking it out.

So the physical address is in Sterling but the location is more between IAD and Brambleton? Pics on FB look great!
I was born in Tacoma Park. Moved when I was young. For most of my life all our "going back home to visit" trips were to Silver Spring. Then my brother and sister moved to Northern Virginia after college and that became my "back to DC" trips. I still don't understand Northern Virginia. My brother's address is Aldie, but everyone refers to it at Stone Ridge. From his house to the brewery (less than 10mins) there is a sign that says South Riding. I hear everyone say Sterling all the time, but when asked where the brewery is I hear people say it is right behind the airport, so I've been saying Dulles lately. I probably fall back on that because most of the people I talk to about don't know that area at all, but they've heard of the airport. Maybe I should just say Loudon County?

We hope to be on tap at any bar in Northern Virginia that has a craft beer focus. We are targeting a few places in Arlington. I'll let you know if we land those accounts.

My company did the foundations for the new hospital going up in Aldie/Stone Ridge/Stonesprings last spring. We called it "Dulles" for general purposes, as everyone knows where that is.

Good luck on the brewery. I'll stop in next time I'm swinging through.

ESPN radio suddenly halts ‘The Man Cave’ and some blame NFL’s Redskins
Sports columnist Jason Reid said goodbye to his Washington Post colleagues on Wednesday and headed off to his next job: hosting a morning radio program on Washington’s ESPN 980 (WTEM AM).

But he never got there.

Late last week, station managers told the would-be radio host that his new program, “The Man Cave,” wasn’t airing as scheduled Monday despite several weeks of promotional buildup. It’s not clear whether it will ever air, at least with Reid running the show. What’s more, the station executive who conceived the Reid-hosted program, Chuck Sapienza, resigned from the station Monday, apparently over the show’s demise.

The quick turn of events, stunning in its own right, is even more so in light of an intriguing who-shot-Jason subplot surrounding the program-that-never-was.

ESPN 980 is the flagship station of Red Zebra Broadcasting, the media company controlled by Redskins owner Daniel Snyder. The football team’s president and general manager is Bruce Allen.

People close to the Redskins and the radio station say Allen has been a key player in the events that buried “The Man Cave.”

Last fall, during his waning days as a Post sports columnist, Reid made it clear that Allen bore responsibility for the Redskins’ woeful play. After the team dropped to 3-11 after losing to the New York Giants on Dec. 14, Reid began his column this way: “For the Washington Redskins, the good news is that their embarrassing season is almost finished. The bad news is that President and General Manager Bruce Allen remains on the job.”

But things got even hotter at a season-ending news conference featuring Allen. Reid fired questions that clearly irritated the football executive, say people who witnessed the exchange.

Reid left no ambiguity about where he stood in his subsequent column: “Bruce Allen continued to tap dance Wednesday, sidestepping questions about how the Washington Redskins plan to improve after another wasted season. And although the team president and general manager vowed to re-evaluate the football operation and make changes, it appears the Redskins will remain on the wrong path as long as Allen is in charge.”

The bad blood seemed to be forgotten as ESPN 980 began developing a morning program built around Reid and Chris Paul, a veteran radio and TV personality (“The Donnie Simpson Show,” “Tom Joyner Morning Show”). The idea: a local sports-talk show hosted by two African American personalities and aimed at African American men that would counter-program “The Sports Junkies,” a drive-time program on archrival The Fan 106.7 (WJFK FM)

ESPN 980 hasn’t had a local show during the lucrative morning drive hours in many years and had all but ceded the local sports niche for the time period to the Junkies, four white guys who have been friends since they grew up together in Prince George’s County. The Snyder-owned station had also intended to air its new show on two smaller local stations that it owns, WWXT (92.7 FM) and WWXX (94.3 FM).

In any case, the idea was unlikely to have been a surprise to the Redskins’ front office. The station has been promoting Reid, Paul and “The Man Cave” for almost a month. A Feb. 20 news release announced the program’s March 16 debut, with Sapienza describing it as “a blend of sports, comedy and entertainment.”

“I’m very excited to be part of this new venture,” Reid said in the release. “I look forward to bringing a dynamic and entertaining program to our listeners.”

It also quoted Rick Carmean, chief executive of Red Zebra Broadcasting, who said that Reid and Paul offered “the perfect combination of sports knowledge, humor and personality.”

The station boosted its promotional efforts last week with on-air spots and a Twitter feed, @980mancave.

Late last week, however, only days after Reid had officially severed ties with The Post, unidentified Redskins executives ordered the station to cancel the debut of “The Man Cave,” said people close to the station, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized by the station to discuss the matter. Sapienza resigned soon after, according to these people, who said that the resignation was related to the cancellation.

ESPN 980 will continue to air the syndicated “Mike & Mike” program during the morning spot once intended for Reid’s and Paul’s program. It’s unclear what Reid, who did not respond to requests for comment, intends to do. Along with the program, he had signed a contract to write columns for ESPN.com part time, which could preclude a return to The Post. But Post Managing Editor Kevin Merida said: “Jason is loved here. We never wanted him to leave.”

All the other principal players remained silent. Sapienza declined to comment. Redskins spokesman Tony Wyllie referred calls to Carmean, who did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Man, you guys just made me feel old. I worked at 15th and M, 13th and I, 16th and K, and 20th and M over the years. Post Pub was the smokiest dingiest best place to grab a beer and lunch....

Most people know that Dan Snyder is an awful human being, but I think you have to live here to really appreciate the depth of his repulsiveness.

That would be awkward as this morning 106.7 was running promos about not having a Mancave and employee paychecks signed by Snyder.
It would also keep the story alive for a long time. I never found Reid to be an interesting columnist but I liked him as a radio guest. I think 106.7's current programming is at least 50% bashing the Mancave thing and I kind of enjoy it.

I think awful human being is a bit of a stretch. ####### or mother####er are acceptable tho.
Nah, I'm pretty comfortable calling him an awful human being.

I'm kinda surprised Snyder has stuck with Czaban as long as he has on his station.Czabe never has a problem speaking to what he thinks is wrong with the team and is very critical of them from the top on down.I know he got suspended a few years back and was taken of the Skins Network because of remarks he made back when Gibbs was around(2nd time).

Snyder is a first class ######## and anybody that defends him is one as well.

Supposedly Reid and Paul both signed contracts before the show was cancelled. So they probably will get paid regardless. If anybody reads www.dcrtv.com, this site has info about the events.

As far as guests on sports radio is concerned, I'm still a big fan of John Feinstein. Love him on the Junkies.
Junior?
I didn't know there were more than one.
Slight reference on my part. He is referred to as "Junior" on The Tony Kornheiser Show. They even have a drop from a movie that escapes me with a guy calling out "Junior!" that is played whenever Feinstein is mentioned. In the past the friends working together in many places, this nickname developed.

Word from Mr. Tony is that John Feinstein had such a bad temper in the press room, similar to the one of none other than former "The Chair" game show host John McEnroe, Jr. The nickname has stuck.
Not sure he is overly fond of it, so it probably isn't carried by Feinstein outside any overlap of realms with Kornheiser.

Heh. A bunch of the old timers I worked with used to rally for the old-school three-martini lunch at that place. I went with them once or twice and felt like I'd been thrown back into the 50s.

There was an even better lunch time dive at Vermont and L. I think it was called Stanley's and you went down a flight of stairs to get into the place. There was usually a platinum blonde of indeterminate age sitting at the bar drinking a martini and a bunch of beefy older gents in short sleeve dress shirts hitting on her.

Also, any of you oldertimers remember Blackie's House of Beef and the various off-shoots around town, like the Black Orchid?

I remember Stanley's and Blackie's....It was fun working down there in the 90's. Early 2000's I moved over to Dupont Circle which was great in the warm months. Now that Im older with kids, etc., Bethesda is about my speed and where I'll remain.

Man, you guys just made me feel old. I worked at 15th and M, 13th and I, 16th and K, and 20th and M over the years. Post Pub was the smokiest dingiest best place to grab a beer and lunch....
Stanley's is actually the place I was thinking of -- down the stairs. Not faux seedy, but authentic dive.

My sister got blind drunk and made a terrible scene at Blackie's once upon a time. Typical college stuff, but she basically stopped drinking afterward.

Stan's is still there (as is the Post Pub mentioned earlier). Been a couple of years now, but I used to head over to those places when I worked at 15th & I.

As far as guests on sports radio is concerned, I'm still a big fan of John Feinstein. Love him on the Junkies.
People still listen to the Junkies? I had to stop listening to them because all they did was yell and talk over each other constantly.
