Congrats to the GW basketball team and devoted fan Don Quixote on the NIT win.  At least someone in this town is doing something in the postseason!

I was debating with my college friends last night over whether winning the NIT is better than a first round NCAA exit, and we were pretty well agreed on the former.  It was a fun run. Was able to go to the Hofstra and Florida games, and the rest were great to watch on TV; also gave the program some good national recognition.  I'll take that any year.

I'd say an NIT title certainly means more for those mid-major type schools, like a GW for example. A few years ago when UNC made it to the NIT finals, it didn't really do anything for me. But for the mid-majors, even though it's not the NCAA, it still gives them national exposure. Which is always a good thing.

Hail to the Buff!
Hail to the Blue!
Hail to the Buff and Blue!!!

As a GW grad (1992 - International Affairs), I too was ecstatic last nite. I agree with MattFancy that it was more important to a school like GW than a big school.

Absolutely better than a first round exit IMO. You get to watch your team win a bunch of times, which is what it's all about.  I'd rather have fun watching my guys than worry about what some talking head thinks is the more impressive banner.

While we're at it, a shout-out to the Old Dominion Monarchs for winning the inaugural Vegas 16 Tournament. Yeah, I know, who needs another post-season tournament? Well,...me. That's who...and every other college basketball junkie who shares their burden with an addiction to College Football and the NFL. Every year, when Fantasy Football starts to wind down in December, I have a big 'WTMF' moment, because I'm flawed in the sense that I cannot follow both sports with the same degree of passion at the same time. So come January, I freak out because I'm waaaaaaay behind the college basketball 8-ball. It takes an enormous amount of work, but if I commit to it, I can be caught up by the time the mid-Major conference tournaments start in the 1st week of March. Besides work and family stuff, I've done literally nothing but watch college basketball for the last month, and I slurp up every last bit of it that I can, before it's off my plate for another 10 months. From a betting standpoint, I stumbled a little this year with college hoops, after having a solid profitable football season, but one of the bright spots was betting on ODU, so I'm more than casually interested in them, proud of them, and happy for them that they took home the Championship. Of interest: the field was originally supposed to be 16 Team, but ultimately issued only 8 invites, most of which had received consideration from the NIT, so as to present the highest quality field as possible. The Champion had to win 3 games in 3 nights, which is no easy task, and that run, through Tennessee Tech, Cal-Santa Barbara and Oakland was as respectable as the runs that Columbia and Morehead St./Nevada accomplished in the CBI or CIT. Between GW, ODU, Virginia, Maryland, VCU, Hampton , Norfolk State and Towson, that's some nice exposure to our general area, which is a solid geographic recruiting bonus to all area schools.

In other news, I had 3 tremendous meals in the last 3 weeks, each in a different are of D.C.: Thip Khao, Ripple, and Boundary Road. Big fan of all 3. More to follow...

Hey, my kid is going to Georgetown next year. I am so excited for a lot of reasons but none more than how great a fit for him I think it's going to be.

Just saw this, congratulations.
Thanks!

Although the story has taken a twist - he suddenly doesn't want to commit without giving a thorough look at Brown. Both are good fits for what he wants in terms of size and a city school with its own distinct campus. Previously he thought Georgetown would be great because Washington > Providence with many more internship opportunities, plus the fun of Hoya basketball games. But since joining the Georgetown accepted student Facebook group, he's gotten a very heavy DC pre-professional vibe from some of the other kids, like they all already know (and care about) the difference between an Assistant Deputy Secretary and a Deputy Assistant Secretary. That's not his scene.

Plus, his intended major has a lot of required courses already, and Georgetown has a pretty restrictive core set of requirements on top of that, whereas Brown has zero course requirements outside your major. Not to mention he's in love, and it's hard not to think that his girlfriend going to school in Boston next year might have some impact on this change of heart. Financial aid for both schools is exactly the same - guess we'd be a little more out of pocket with the extra travel costs to Rhode Island.

On the one hand, he probably can't go wrong either way. And my wife and I are being totally supportive. But I have to admit we were pretty happy about having him in DC, especially because we feel G'town is the right place for him, and so we're not quite as happy now.

No more hijack, but if anyone has insight about either of these schools, or walking your kid through the college selection process, I'd love a PM.

:lmao:

I know the feeling. But, sometimes it's helpful to learn to care about things that you don't care about. In that sense, maybe Georgetown would be good for him. It can help expose him to a skill he might need later and it may also expose him to the types of people he'll be working with and competing against in the job market. Those are things I've started to learn later in my career and it has certainly delayed my progression.

However, there are obviously many more things in life that are much more important. I'm guessing everything will turn out fine whatever he decides.

Thanks!

Congrats either way, my friend. The bolded, I suspect, carries a lot more weight to him than it seems it should to everyone else. Not saying your kid isn't level-headed (he seems remarkably so), but none of us are dating her.

Awhile ago, we talked about Ovechkin being the top DC athlete since Baugh and Walter Johnson. What Ovechkin has done in his career is pretty awesome, but Harper might be taking that crown soon.

He's on pace but needs to do it for 4 or 5 more years first. Every reason to think he will, but you never know
True. I'll admit I'm getting sucked in by his current run and am jumping the gun. Exciting to think that after so many years of lacking generational greatness, we might have two at the same time.

Going to be back in DC for a week starting Friday. This time with the wife and teen daughter. Any ideas for a unique weekend activity for the three of us?  Throw out whatever ideas you have.  From what I can tell the weather will be awesome. Will be staying near Dupont Circle if that matters.

Going for like 12 days in June. Other than eating at Ben's every night like I would prefer to do, I would happily take any great food recs.

On Saturday the National Cannabis Festival takes place at RFK. Teen daughter toking yet? (just kidding  :D ).

The Nationals are in town all weekend vs the Twins. Both day games on Saturday and Sunday.

I was in DC last week for the Science and Technology thing at the convention center. We saw the CannaBus driving around while we waited for our charter bus. Guess the guy was a week early.

Maybe use Capital Bikeshare to tour a few different spots in the city since the weather will be nice?

Shopping in Georgetown or Old Town Alexandria?

A tour of Ford's Theater? Or a show there?

Thanks dgreen.  I like the bike idea, and had already considered Georgetown although the wife and kid aren't big shoppers (I got lucky).

Given the expectation of nice weather, I would have bet money on a National Arboretum mention.

The bike share in DC is a great option. The Mall is a lot bigger than most realize and bikes make much more possible in a given day. Then you can also safely take a gorgeous trail ride up Rock Creek Park to the Smithsonian Zoo if you want to check out the pandas. Or ride along the river to Georgetown, Iwo Jima Memorial, Arlington Cemetery (no bikes allowed in the cemetery unless you have a vehicle pass given to families of the interred), Gravely Point at the end of the National Airport runway which is cooler than it sounds, Tidal Basin/Jefferson/FDR, etc. Bikes are a huge plus.

A couple ideas a bit off the normal tourist path:

If you're feeling outdoorsy spend some time in Rock Creek Park. For some reason visitors don't use it or hang out there, but it's both a great woodsy park and a perfect way to get where you want to go if you're doing bikeshare- it'll take you to the zoo via a less crowded entrance, or south to the Kennedy Center, the Potomac River and the monuments. Map is here, you can see that there's pretty quick access from Dupont Circle at P St, and if you're feeling ambitious they close the roads north of Pierce Mill on weekends so bikers and joggers can use them (you can drive up and park by Pierce Mill).

A couple Dupont ideas: if you're into this sort of thing check out O Street Mansion and affiliated museum. The building is bizarre, all kinds of secret doors and themed rooms and whatnot. They do brunch and champagne tours and have jam sessions for musicians and whatnot. Also you might as well walk over to the Phillips Museum and see The Luncheon of the Boating Party and whatever else they've got going these days as long as you're in the neighborhood.

Quick cheap breakfast recommendation: Dupont Circle has IMO the only decent bagels in DC at Bethesda Bagels just north of the circle on Connecticut. If you see a big goofy guy there in a Nats hat and glasses chasing around two toddlers on a Saturday morning that's me.

In the "keep it simple" category- when the weather's really nice everyone hangs out at the Circle itself to talk and read and flirt and try to look cool. I'm guessing your teenager would be down with that scene.  Plus on days like that the people who sell edibles usually set up shop just north of the Circle in an appropriately adorned vehicle, if that's your thing and you need to hide it from the kid

An under-visited spot in the DuPont Circle area is Woodrow Wilson's house. It was his home post-Presidency. It's no Mount Vernon (which you should see if you are here for a week), but it's still interesting.

A more offbeat thing you could do is a Potomac River cruise from Georgetown to Old Town Alexandria and back. Besides shopping, there are some good museums in Alexandria. I'm a fan of the Apothecary and the Carlyle House (which currently has an interesting exhibit related to the PBS show "Mercy Street", which is based on a Civil War hospital that was on the site).

You could also look into some walking tours. Ford's Theatre and the Museum of Crime and Punishment (which no longer exists, but for the tours) have a couple of downtown DC walking tours based on Lincoln's assassination and other seedy events.

A lot of things mentioned here are great. One note on Capital Bikeshare is to understand how it works. A lot of people just rent the bike and apparently don't return it until the end of the day. Check out angry Yelp reviews about it! But as long as you don't have the bikes out for more than 30 minutes at a stretch, it's a great service. Also if you want to go full tourist, you could take a segway tour.

Can you expand on this (if you weren't joking)?
I was not joking. Google "Kush Gods" from a non-work internet browser to see their adorned vehicles and for more info. They got in legal trouble a couple months ago for essentially pushing things just a little too far, and I haven't seen the guy who started the business since then, but the two women working with him are still at it. They're out pretty much every weekend afternoon and evening. The location changes but just north of the Circle by the Starbucks and Kramerbooks seems to be the most popular spot. You can follow them on Instagram to get their location on a given day. Supposedly they do deliveries in the city too, but I've never tried that.

Also I've had mixed results at best from the edibles, so caveat emptor, but my tolerance is up there so who knows. No such problems with the regular stuff they sell.

My sons have started listening to sports radio in their room at night when they get in bed. I think it's usually Chris Russell on 106.7 at night (unless there's a game on). Last night, I thought to myself, "I grew up listening to Ken Beatrice at night in my room and my sons are going to grow up with Chris Russell." :yucky:  I find Chris Russell to be so annoying.

He just sounds so whiny when he talks

Didn't see any mention of ESPN 980's new lineup(starts next month)

Al Galdi 5-7am

Chris Cooley and Kevin Sheehan 7am-11am

Tony K 11am-1pm

Doc Walker,B-Mitch and Scott Jackson(Inside the Locker Room)1pm-4pm

Sports Reporters returns(Czabe andAndy Pollin)4pm-7pm

DMV Gametime(Tim Murray and Nick Ashooh)7pm-11pm

No clue why they love Cooley as much as they do and really think Al Galdi deserves better but at least they are done with Mike and Mike for the time being.

Interesting that Mr. Tony was willing to move. I would think he would be so stuck in his patterns to not warrant a change.

It is funny how they are referring to Kevin Sheehan by misremembered names and how he is 'dead to them' because he took the new job.

I am happy to see that Tom Lovero (sp?) is not coming back. His voice bothered me.

Of course a radio station owned by Snyder would have 3 ex-Redskins on the radio. 980 is decent if all you want is Redskins talk (outside of Mr Tony). Cooley has become so annoying that I can't listen to anything he says anymore. Doc and BMitch don't really know anything outside of football. I don't mind Galdi, he was becoming stale on The Drive because he would just suck up to Cooley the whole time. I can take or leave Czabe and Andy. Don't mind Sheehan, but he can be annoying at times when it comes to his man crush Mike Shanahan. Overall, we have some terrible sports talk in this town.

I can certainly agree with this without question.Czabe is the only one in the bunch I find entertaining and at least has a good read on what's going on in the sports world so I will stick it out with the Sports Reporters much like I find his morning show on Yahoo the best of any show going.106.7 really is no better and may actually be worse which is really saying something.

The Junkies are just tired and stale now.Maybe if they just got completely away from sports I would listen more often but if I never have to hear donk or rick anymore coming from them I would be just fine.Chad Dukes is by far the worst of them all though and again needs to be talking about anything except sports and this is coming from someone who actually did like Big O and Dukes, the main reason being they didn't talk sports very often.

But to be really fair here most sports talk is garbage with very few shows that I find are worth the time to make a regular tune in for me so local radio really isn't that much different if at all.

My biggest beef is if you are gonna talk sports at least have some knowledge about them and quit asking the generic questions to every guest you have on.One reason I like Dan LeBatard is because he is such a great interviewer who always throws a curveball to whomever he has on and isn't scared to ask the tough questions.Czabe also has that quality in him and he isn't shy about calling out anyone and everyone if he thinks something is wrong.Have a strong opinion, back it up with facts and than be able to debate them in a reasonable manner seems pretty easy to do but is oh so hard to find in sports talk these days.

Oh I agree, 106.7 really isn't any better. I listen to the Junkies in the morning, but I definitely like them more when they don't try and focus on sports, especially the Redskins. Grant and Danny can be okay at times, but they are a little too homerish for my liking. And Chad Dukes, well I can't stand him.

I know the Redskins are the king of the city, but that's really all that gets talked about around here. I'm not even a Nats fan (O's fan here), but talk about them at least. Talk about the Caps, who have been the best team in the city the last 8 years or so now. Everything is always about the Redskins, which is fine during the season, but I don't need constant Redskins news during February and March and then May and June. There's not much happening at that point, but that's all local radio wants to talk about.

I brought this up to EB of the Junkies and also to Dukes and both said the same exact thing.Redskins and the NFL drives the ratings and they are in the business to make money which is why they dominate the sports talk shows here and nationally. And then they go into we really would love to talk more about the Caps,Wiz,Nats etc but for that reason they only really get one segment and then it's back to Skins talk for the rest of the 4 hours with some BS sprinkled in along the way.

The point I brought up was maybe it was part of their job to energize the fans and get them wanting to talk about the other teams by actually knowing how to bring out the hardcore fans and get them tuning in by learning the sports a little more.Of course that was viewed as a dig against them(which it clearly was but also was very true and they both know it)and it quickly got shot down as me being a hater.

You want me as a diehard Caps fan to listen to your show but yet every time you do talk about them your knowledge of the sport makes it that I want to scream at the radio WTF are you talking about?Take the time to actually watch the games, take the time to actually learn the rules and how the game is played but that really is too much to ask so I will just be a person that tunes in from time to time and expects very little in terms of hockey talk and am just happy they even get mentioned at this point.

If you look at ESPN it's the same story. You get maybe 1 or 2 highlights in one segment and then the rest of the time it's all NFL and NBA.So they also play a huge role in how things are talked about. The more ESPN coverage the more it translates to radio getting more play on said topic.

Newsflash to ESPN,the NBA playoffs have SUCKED!!
