The ***OFFICIAL*** Washington, DC thread (1 Viewer)

Has anyone else been to the new TopGolf place in Ashburn? Interesting take on the driving rage. You rent a 'bay' for a period of time ($35/hour) and any number of people can participate. You can either play 'games' where each shot is given a score based on accuracy to different targets in the range. Food and drinks like a sports bar delivered to eating area in the bay with a couch and table. TVs in the bays and around the facility with the ability to change channels (nice on a Sunday afternoon!). Three stories of bays provide varying angles towards the targets.

I went with my parents and two pre-teen sons yesterday. Tons of fun in the glorious weather. Mom just sat and watched, enjoying watching her grandsons have fun. Overall not hugely expensive, especially if you factor the ability to split the cost of the time between people.

Been to the one in Alexandria. Its fun, though drink service can be a little slow.

Rode by the Kennedy Center today and noticed they'd started working on the expansion. I really hope that leads to something being done about the ugliest bridge under the sun.

Wow, that looks pretty cool. Looks like something the kids might love to do sometime. Did a 360 tour of the Ashburn site and was hoping to see more privacy of the bays in hopes that nobody would be able to see how much I sucked at golf. But, it's like a bowling alley and everyone around will be able to see how horrible I am. Once, a long time ago, I was a driving range and had the club fly out of my hand down the line of tees. Luckily there weren't many people there and I didn't come close to hitting anyone, but that event has scared me from going to driving ranges.

Looks like you have to buy a $5 membership card for each person? So the first trip for a family of four doing one hour would be $55 ($35, depending on the time of day, plus $20 for the membership cards), but only $35 each time after that. Not bad.

Is the food reasonably priced? Is it just typical sports bar food?

I've been to TopGolf Alexandria a number of times. I don't pay too much attention to the "points"; fun to just drink beers and take some whacks. I usually end up on the mini golf course afterwards to work off the buzz.

Yeah the $5 card is a bit annoying, and yes it is a one-time-only cost, but it is not wholly necessary for everyone. It is only needed if you want too keep score. If you have a little kid that is only going to take a shot every once and a while, they may not need a card, but if your kids are like mine, even my 8 y.o. girl will want a card, because the brothers have one!!

Yes, it's typical bar food. people in the bay next to us had wings and such (although I wouldn't want wings while golfing, too much mess!!) We had a couple of flatbread pizzas that were $8 or so. They weren't huge, appetizer size 4x8 or 4x10 with each 'slice' being @ 2" square. 5 sodas made it less than $30. Left a big tip, because the guy helped us newbies out a ton!

We figure the cost is similar to bowling or less than a movie. The bays had heaters above the front where you were golfing, so you ought to be able to go there on a cooler day. My boys aren't good golfers, but it didn't matter. And the games can help with this. We did one where you got points for accuracy to the closer targets. It would say "Aim for a Yellow Target." And you get points only if you hit that target, I think there were two. My younger guy wasn't interested in the game and just hit random shots. He was trying to convince us he was winning because he had a lower score, due to negative numbers for his shots! If all were interested, you could do something with teams and such for excitement.

I have been told Top Golf is running a lot of holiday specials. So if you can get a day to get a group of family together that likes to golf it would be pretty fun and affordable. You can rent clubs there as well.

The bays come with clubs, sized for male and female. They also have children's clubs, at no extra charge. The may rent nicer clubs (although the bay clubs were fine) but I didn't check.

Discussion I had with my wife last night: is this year's version of the Caps the best DC sports team since the 1991 Redskins? Perhaps they'll falter at some point during the regular season but they're well on their way. The other options would probably be the 2009-10 Caps and the 2012 Nats, and we know those seasons ended in total disaster. Low bar obviously, but still something to appreciate.

I can say without hesitation this years Caps team is the best team they have ever had.Two really good scoring lines, solid D who chips in the scoring as well and Braden ####### Holtby(aka Holtbeast)who really is having one of those special seasons.1st in wins,1st in GAA and tied for 4th in SP speaks for itself and when the team isn't playing that well in front of him he finds ways to bail them out time and time again.

Wizards aren't even in this discussion and quite frankly neither are the Skins so that leaves the Nats as the only legit threat to unseat them.2012 for them was just like the Caps of 09/10.Looked like world beaters but #### a brick come playoff time so we shall see where this years version of the Caps finishes. In the NHL all you need is a dance card and a hot goalie and you go far.Right now they have that hot goalie but the season is still long and injuries are a major factor.

I want to see how this team is playing at the end of the regular season to judge them a little better.Right now they really aren't playing that well in front of Holtby but they are still winning which tells me once they fix the little areas that need to be addressed they will start to really get on a roll of good play.Of course I always think they could play better but that's just the old Caps fan in me who has seen year after year of good teams but no finished product. This year they have the makeup to make a very long run,now it's time to just ####### do it.

never been but am going this Saturday

we reserved 2 rooms and they wanted $700 to reserve 2 rooms next to each other?! doesn't make any sense

it does look like fun though

rooms? are they indoor simulators? $700 is a lot, but considering the revenue loss due to a no-show they might as well get it if they can. youre certainly not going to blow it off with a $700 deposit.

I suppose the 97 DC United (Supporter's Shield, scored 13 more goals than anyone else in the league, didn't lose a game in the playoffs) and the Kastles who won like 6 straight titles don't count?

Yeah that's the vibe I get too. Sad that two outstanding months is enough to vault you to the very top of the last quarter-century, but also seems like something we should appreciate while it's happening. With the way they're playing I have a feeling they're gonna be dealing with a crazy amount of hype and expectations come April, way more than any other local team has faced in a long time.

I always assume the "... of the four major American spectator sports" is implied in these conversations, but I should have said it. My bad. I wish there was more enthusiasm for United, I've tried to get into it a couple times. As for team tennis, it's great that the DC team does well but my understanding is that it's no more than a side show for the sport.

Marginally related question: why don't United play any day games? I'm always looking for something to do with my young kids to stir things up a bit on the weekends, but IIRC all of their home games (and all the home games of the women's team, the Spirit) were 7 PM starts. Even the Wiz do 6 PM Sunday evening starts to accommodate families.

I was just thinking about how big a star Holtby is becoming. If he played any other sport, he'd be the biggest thing in DC right now. Instead, he's still emerging - the Caps are still Ovie's team plus there just aren't that many fans in town who are going to excited about a hockey goalie.

It was a genuine pleasure to watch him last night. Night even that many big stops, it's just that he was an absolute brick wall. Made save after save after save with seeming ease, felt like he gave up absolutely no rebounds, and generally made it clear that goals for the Pens were going to be exceedingly few and far between. Geno knew they were whipped and acted like a petulant child all night long as a result.

It's not indoor, rather it's covered on three sides, with the front open for the golfing. Depending on the wind, you may not get blockage. There is heating over the tee boxes. The seating is back a bit from the opening, which will help some.

Also the facility faces east, which helps with sun issues for afternoon driving, but you will not get afternoon warmth! The range is about 225 in length.

RFK is a pit. And United play really, really unattractive soccer. Even when they're winning.

United do play afternoon games on weekends fairly frequently. I know Giovinco tore them a new one in front of my brother and niece on a Saturday afternoon this season.

Thanks, I don't remember seeing one this season but I didn't look too carefully. I'll look again in the spring. RFK may be a pit, but it's a metro-accessible pit, which is huge. Especially when your kids are still young enough to think riding the subway is super-exciting and awesome. I assume they're still a couple years away from moving to Buzzard Point?

Way too early in a long hockey season to have that discussion. Talking about it now just shines a light on how bad we've had it.

We could be watching the best DC team in 25 years and the worst NFL division winner of all time in the same year.

Tony Kornheiser started his Bandwagon columns about a quarter of the way through the 1991 season. It was clear early on that something special was happening that season. Can we say the same for the Caps right now?

Yup, I think so. That's why I mentioned it. You've got a hockey expert like tom saying this is the best team they've ever had and a novice like me watching them in lieu of a Wiz game last night because they're just that much fun, at least so far.

The hockey playoffs aren't the football playoffs of course, much tougher road, much more likely to lose to "lesser" teams. But I say we rev it up again. We could use some optimism and fun. Who's driving, though? Steinberg?

I will say to pump the brakes for the time being. The recent stretch of games has shown me that while Holtby has been out of this world good the team in front of him has been average at best in pushing possession numbers.

A really good breakdown of what having Orpik out of the lineup has done-http://www.japersrink.com/2015/12/15/10142424/the-possession-impact-of-brooks-orpiks-injury

Orpik last played November 10 at Detroit, the Caps' 14th game of the season. Through that game, Washington amassed 54% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts (third overall) and 52.6% of the scoring (seventh). In the 14 games since (excluding last night in Pittsburgh), the Caps have gotten just under 49% of the shots (15th) and under 50% of the scoring chances (17th). After ranking first overall through November 10 in shot suppression, they're 25th since November 11 (19th adjusted for score)
It's a troubling trend but one that can be fixed IMO.

I assumed he retired a long time ago.

Jim Vance has to be nearing the end, no? Guy has been around forever. I wonder if he ever came close to moving up to a national show.
I imagine his history with cocaine was probably an impediment there. He's still the smoothest Ive seen in an anchor chair.

As if winning isn't enough for this Caps fan I have to say they played one of the better games of the season last night against the Sens.Sens are a fast team that loves to build it through the neutral zone and come at you in waves in the offensive end normally 4 players deep and the Caps did a great job of clogging the neutral zone up and pushing the Sens to the outside almost every time they were in the offensive end.Had it not been for that pretty horrible call on Wilson(I could see a 2 minute penalty tops, not a 5)it was easily going to be a shutout for Holtby but I will still take a 2-1 win any day given the quality of play on display.

Only saw a few mistakes but a ton more positives that will bode well for them if they continue it.Not sure how many times I can say this but I will in that you really have to watch Holtby and say he is just dominant right now and looks to be the best goalie in the league and that is something the Caps have been lacking during the Ovie era which is why I think this is a Cup contender and have thought so before the season started. Also need to give props to Justin Williams who has been outstanding so far.I loved what Brouwer brought to the team but Williams is taking it to another level on both ends of the ice.

Sorry for the buzzkill earlier but I call it like I see it.Sure winning is great but the goal is a Cup and to do so they have to be playing the right way.Last night is what I want to see more often.

Have to edit and add this. How nice did those uniforms look last night?

We're coming to DC for a family sightseeing vacation in March 2016. March 19th-26th specifically.
If you don't have all your sightseeing spots picked out yet, go see Great Falls on the Potomac. Really impressive no matter how many times you see it.
Didn't think about this till reading your post fatness, but that visit is in the early window for the Cherry Blossoms. If you are lucky and the timing is right, this is spectacular.

BTW since you are in the window, I wouldn't last-minute on your reservations for hotels. If starts to head towards early, you could have some issues.
We booked two rooms at a hotel in Rosslyn in Arlington.

We are thinking of taking a group of 12 or 13 this spring. Did you run in to any places that can accomodate that many or am I looking at doing 3 rooms?

If anyone's interested in them, I've got 2 tickets (good seats) to see Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes Sunday night at the Rams Head in Annapolis. PM if interested.

Man, oh man, I wish I could take them off of your hands but I'm gonna be back out of Annapolis on Saturday. Southside put out an album a few months ago that kicks all kinds of ###. And Rams Head is a fantastic concert venue.

I'm back. Been here since the 23rd. Saw a laughable ballet last night. Will be part of the festivities for the Military Bowl in tomorrow. Having a lovely holiday in this tropical clime. Leaving on the 30th. I just declined a fool's run to Philly for cheesesteaks. Californians traveling with me thought that was a good use of a day. Um, no. So me and the smart ones are free of the dumb ones today. Last time I did this you local fbgs earned a reputation w/my locals for giving poor dining advice. It's Sunday. I'm going to Ocelot for some beers to ship west. Other than that, I'm free to show off your great advice for lunch or an early dinner. Casual, easy parking and awesome food, thanks. Price is not an issue. Cheers.

Just food? Taco Bamba (super casual by the reigning DC chef of the year), Rice Paper (Vietnamese), or Bangkok Golden (Laotian/Thai), all in Falls Church and all among best in DC area. Where did you go last time? There is a ton of great food in the area, so bummer it didn't work out.

Best pizza in the area is Pupatella in Arlington.

Saturday, there was a bit of history in DC sports. The Washington Redskins, Washington Capitals, and Washington Wizards all won on the same day for the first time in 32 years (and nine days). And if we’re counting just by days, it took 11,697 of them for this to happen again.

CC, have you been to Annapolis before?
Yes, a couple times but I haven't seen much. Once was specifically to eat at an Italian deli and wine market to pick up a particular Arneis I cannot find on the west coast. The other was similar. Why? I have to be there very early tomorrow because my group is all Northrop vips and I guess I'm going to be on the field waving the giant flag. haha.

Thanks. I think a herd of Californians best pass on the Mexican. We're in Vienna happy to drive for a good meal. We ate at some 50s diner recommended here specializing in local and had a bad go. No big deal to me. I'm not going to list the other disappointments because I'm not remembering specifics and the bad seafood wasn't an fbg recommendation, but 3/4ths of that party got sick. I'm less than half joking blaming you guys. We've had two bad experiences mostly because you guys don't seem to understand I want to really high prices, really good food, and casual. You know, so I feel at home. I've always been interested in the Ethiopian around here and never tried it. Something like that maybe? Not so common in SoCal.

Why? I have to be there very early tomorrow because my group is all Northrop vips and I guess I'm going to be on the field waving the giant flag. haha.
Oh, ok - you're not overnighting there, then. I was gonna suggest some eating/drinking spots if you were.

In Vienna try Bazin's on Church St and Clarity on East St. Both are fine dining but not super upscale.

Amphora for bfast lunch or dinner- diner open 24 hours.

If you want a gyro Skorpios is the place.

Also a relatively new brewery opened in Vienna called Caboose Brewing.

We have to be there at 9am to get our halftime instructions and stuff, but I think we're free most of the day, there's a parade, kickoff at 2:30. I'd love a suggestion for really good food in a casual setting for lunch/brunch. There will be 7 in our party, one minor. Price is not an issue. Finding really good food here has been.

Caboose looks good thanks. May just give it a try Tuesday.

Welp. My sis and girlfriend went to Amphora once and swore they never would again. My BiL's family went to Brazin's on Church and it was miserable.

I give up trying to find really good casual dining here.
