The Overlooked, the Underrated, and the Unappreciated (1 Viewer)

Seven players I believe have the skills to develop into starters, but won't hear their names called until at day three of the draft (if at all).

Greg Kellogg has a nice interview with Long on his show a couple of weeks back. Seems like a great kid.

With all the late picks the Pats have it will be interesting to see if McNeal gets a look to replace Faulk and I wouldn't mind having another Graham on the roster at the TE position.

Thanks Matt!!

Great article. For those of us who don't follow college ball its tough to get a read on the less heralded rookies. Combine numbers only take you so far.....and some of the smaller prospects never even make it there.

Keep up the good work.

There's a lot of love for Carlton Mitchell and Marcus Easley, but Scott Long could wind up being that guy people should have been excited about...

Long's the guy that tore up the Combine, right?I haven't watched a Louisville game since early 08 (after Cantwell showed me he wasn't worth watching), so I didn't know anything about Long before February.

Yep. As I mentioned in the piece, I think this a textbook example of how the combine can be helpful. Long had as good if not better combine than Carlton Mitchell.

Good stuff, I'll keep an eye on him day 3. It's athletes like him that makes me scratch my head about Arrellious Benn being talked about as a round 2 pick. A similar player can be found much, much later. The potential reward is not worth the risk.

I agree on Sanders and Graham.

I think Sanders could sneak into the 3rd round when it's all said and done.

:) I much rather read about sleepers than join into the constant debate about top 5 players. (Not that I know much about either topic.)

:) And unlike many of the top-5 debates...most people around here actually know what they're talking about with some of these sleepersGreat writeup Matt

One of the players that I kind of like that probably won't get drafted is Tyler Sheehan. Matt I was wondering what you think of him.

Love the Toney Baker support. :hifive:

I agree with the pros cited in the writeup. He is extremely strong... I believe his 27 reps in the bench press led all RBs at the combine. And his 37" vertical and 4.3 short shuttle were competitive with the other RBs at the combine. As for his 40 time, Rivals shows that coming out of high school (as a 5 star recruit), he ran 4.45, so perhaps he will get a bit faster as he further recovers from his injury and drops a few pounds... but he unofficially ran a 4.53 at N.C. State's pro day at 235 pounds.

Another aspect that is probably a bit underrated about Baker is his receiving ability. He had 28/355/3 receiving last season and averaged more than 10 yards per reception for his career (65/676).

I really hope he gets drafted and makes a roster. He has been through a lot, and most thought his career was ended by his knee injury in the 2007 opener. He won the ACC's 2009 Brian Piccolo Award, given annually since 1972 in memory of the late Brian Piccolo to the "most courageous" football player in the ACC.

Chan Gailey said he wants to draft a scatback and i've have Mcneal as a player the Bills grab with one of there 6th round draft picks. I haven't seen him play but i've read multiple good reports about him.

I'm pretty sure Mike Mayock put Sanders in his top 5 WR rankings.

I remember hearing Graham's name come up a lot during the senior bowl week.

Mr. Waldman I am glad to report your QB sleeper has signed. Per KFFL:

Tue, 11 May 2010 19:04:03 -0400 The New Orleans Saints have signed undrafted rookie free-agent QB Greg Paulus (Syracuse), reports John DeShazier, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

:)I'm kind of liking the fact Mr. Paulus got signed by a team with a head coach who is known for his astute knowledge of free agent QBs...we'll see how it plays out.

Great point. It was Sean Payton who plucked Tony Romo out of obscurity.

The Saints didn’t sign Greg Paulus to an undrafted rookie free agent contract following his tryout according to Bradley Handwerger of WWLTV in New Orleans. But in the little time he did spend learning under Super Bowl winning coach and tutor Sean Payton, he did impress.

“Early on, he’s done a good job of making decisions and locating the ball,” Payton said on Saturday, midway through mini-camp. “He’s pretty interesting.”

In his one and only season playing football after four on the hardwood, Paulus threw for 2,025 yards, tossed 13 touchdowns and was intercepted 14 times. He completed 67.7 percent of his passes and led the Orange to wins over bowl teams Northwestern and Rutgers, throwing for a career-high 346 yards in the win over the Wildcats.

Too bad, but maybe there's hope...he's a long shot, but a fun one to follow.
