Into a discussion on another board...there is a study out there saying the cap has really not created the competetive balance that it maybe was meant to...you can find it here...

Discussion on the Cap

However...when you really look at it...you notice something else...parity...

from 1980 to 93...14 years...6 teams won the Super Bowl. Since that time...from 94 (first year of the hard cap)to 04...8 different teams have won the Super Bowl...with a 75% chance it will be 9 different teams after this season (if Denver does not win it all).

I did not read the white paper, but I will off up a theory: The salary cap prevents a few teams from outspending everyone else and upsetting the competitive balance. However, it does not prevent cheap teams from skimping and being regularly amongst the worst teams in the NFL.

i did a study on this in a sports marketing class when i was getting my mba. there was a clear correlation that in MLB (no salary cap) and NBA (soft cap) that money spent was correlated with winning %. in the NFL that was not the case due to the cap.the hard cap does what it is supposed to do...eliminate certain teams from spending more than others, which is a clear indicator of a team's winning % in the regular season.quite frankly i think this paper is looking at the wrong thing, or at least failed to look at how this cap works in comparison to other caps.plus their assertion that the scheduling is unbalanced is flat out wrong. only two of a team's 16 games are based on their schedule from the year before. 6 games are against teams in your division, 4 games are against a pre-determined division in the AFC, and 4 games are against a pre-determined division in the NFC.these :nerd:s completely missed the boat.
