Pollard signs with Hawks

Permalink Posted by Mike Sando @ 11:52:38 am

The Seahawks have signed veteran TE Marcus Pollard, agent Glenn Schwartzman confirmed this morning. Pollard signed a one-year deal about an hour ago. Terms were not immediately available but there is some guaranteed money, which basically means Pollard isn't just coming to camp with the team. The Hawks were light on tight ends with starting experience, but Pollard's addition changes that. Pollard has 125 starts in 177 regular-season games, catching 321 passes for 4,007 yards and 38 touchdowns.

"We're really excited about the opportunity and the chance to be with a competitive team," Schwartzman said. "We think he'll be an important piece in the Seattle offense. ... There is no better guy that I've ever been around. He has a lot left in the tank."

Pollard spent his first 10 NFL seasons with the Colts. He caught 46 passes for the Lions in 2005, but his role changed when Mike Martz implemented his receiver-centric offense last season. Schwartzman said he thinks Pollard will be a very good fit in Seattle's offense. Pollard joins a group featuring Will Heller, Bennie Joppru and Leonard Stephens. Former starter Jerramy Stevens is a free agent. Re-signing Stevens has not been a priority.

Crap crap and double crap. I hate having the "fingers crossed" mentality when it comes to a potential starter. Not good. Not good at all.

I didn't think Stevens was exactly Mr Reliable-? Granted Pollard isn't what he used to be but might at least be a viable "1B" option.

Stevens may not be "Mr Reliable" but he's also not "Mr Unreliable" either. Yes, he choked in the Super Bowl, but far greater players than Stevens have choked choked on Super Bowl Sunday. Prior to the big game, he was having a fine year, especially in the playoffs. This season, he struggled with injuries to start the year, and had a some issues with drops. But once again, he stepped it up late in the year and was absolutely dominant in the Seahawks playoff game against Dallas. He's an extremely valuable member of the Seahawks offense and his ability to stretch the field just can't be replaced by a guy like Pollard.

Brilliant. He just cost himself millions of dollars. Even Randy McMichael had the good sense not to get arrested during free agency.

What were you hoping for Shick, other than Daniel Graham benig signed? Jerramy Stevens has been quite the disappointment and carries his baggage with him. I think not re-signing Stevens is the good way to go and use Pollard as a stop gap for a free agent next year or a TE rookie.

On the bright side . . . . at least they didn't spend big $$$$ on Shiancoe.

exactly

It seems to me that Seahawks mgmt should have better prepared for this dammit. It was allways hanging out there, ever since they drafted Stevens. They have gaffed big time two offseasons in row.

What should they have done differently then? What free agent or rookie should they have pursued in the past few offseasons?-Tony Gonzalez never got to Free agency cause he signed with KC.-They offered Daniel Graham big money, but he chose the Broncos instead. -They brought in Randy McMichael, but he is just as much of a felony waiting to happen as Jerramy Stevens.-2007 Free agent TEs available this offseason...Reggie Kelly, Kyle Brady, Michael Gaines, Eric Johnson, etc. Nothing good at all. -2006 Free Agent TEs available last year...Jeb Putzier, Chad Baker, Chad Lewis, Dan Campbell to name the best few available. Nothing good at all.So instead of signing Pollard as a stop gap to find a TE in free agency next year or draft a rookie in the next two drafts, what should the Hawks have done?

I hardly think this can compare with the Curse of the Transition Tag, especially considering that Stevens isn't even a Seahawk. Nor was it a given that he would've been. They went after the best FA TE and lost out to his hometown and have been looking at other TEs. Clearly Stevens was not their first choice. So "losing" someone you never had due to a relapse in character from a player that had cleaned up his act with no problems for 3 years is anywhere near a "big time gaffe". Clearly the TE position is a little weak right now but I am not worried about it as there are 3 capable, though far from spectacular, bodies in therealready. The Hawks have addressed, or at least pursued, their needs at OL, DL, D backfield and many role players. I would say it was a very successful offseason so far. And if Stevens was gonna flame out I'm glad he did it before a signing bonus got handed over. Guess this means Hackett will just havew to emerge as the redzone threat with his size.

What could they have done different? I dont think they have drafted a TE in four years so that could be a start. They had to know Stevens would be gone sooner rather than later even before SB XL. They could have spared some of the money they threw at Nate B to try and sign a top level TE or trade for one. I may have overstated the huge-ness of the mistake, but no matter how you slice it, Marcus Pollard as your TE at this point in his career to me is not a good play... especially when you plan to contend for a SB title. ...me no likey.

Is it a given that he will not re-sign here? Seems to me this just gave the Hawks leverage to get him on the cheap and keep a huge part of the contract in incentives to assure good behavior. Gotta factor in a suspension and clauses for getting popped again. But he just cost himself money and the Hawks could dangle a carrot to keep him in line. Remember this is his first incident in 3 years. I don't buy that he kicked at the Raider, he was being thrown around, and that he started a 'war of words' with Porter. What's wrong with saying you're gonna win the SB?! But if you make him work for his paycheck he can be a force! He cna make dynamic plays but he's also a great blocker. I'm not saying I want him, but he's an upgrade to what we currently have signed and he may get somewhat desperate with an ill-timed arrest.

Good posting, he lost all leverage with Seattle when he got arrested. However, Ruskell will say no way. The only chance of Stevens being on the team is if Holmgren steps up, it was his draft pick and he seemed to really pull for him.If Stevens does not come back, I like Eric Johnson. He is good when healthy.

He has been given five years and more than his share of chances to get his act together. He has failed to do so and its time for him to go. see; Koren Robison

Mgmt doesnt get off the hook that easy either. I think they allowed themselves to get into this position.

just my .02
