The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. Promising Young Women and professional wrestlers (18 Viewers)

I, TONYA - 27PTS

BROKER - 27PTS

Often movies like Boogie Nights and others with themes of "found families" rise up my rankings, and we have more of that in Broker by Kore-eda who I talked about this morning. It stars Song Kang-ho, who has been in a ton of other great movies of the century, including a hand full by Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon Ho. Here he is a business owner who takes babies that are left at a local church and sells them on the black market. Something happens during an exchange and a pseudo family is formed. I can't recommend seeking out a few of his movies if you haven't already seen some. I see in blurbs he gets compared to Ozu a bit, and I would agree in that he tends to make meditative movies about family and social dynamics. There are a couple sci-fi and thrillers in his filmography too. All I have seen are good, so you can't go wrong with the two I listed or any of: Nobody Knows, Shoplifters, The Third Murder, After the Storm, or Like Father Like Son (no, not a remake of the Moore/Cameron classic). Broker is on Hulu now, I believe.

It looks like 4 of the next 5 are KP solo picks, so you are stuck with my tastes for most of the morning picks. The other pick was on both of our lists.

The one on both our lists won an Oscar for a first time writer/director. Stars a name that was mentioned today in one of my picks.

As for my other 4:
My favorite Pixar movie that happens to star one of my least favorite actors and makes me cry every time.
One of my few musicals on the list. This is the one from Europe.
a movie about an inspiring athlete that might have the worst title on the countdown
the movie that was statistically the lowest watched movie on the countdown according to Letterboxd. Stars two elite older actors planning a party.

Allison Janney and Paul Walter Hauser are just on another level in this. It rides some kind of insane line between horrible true crime movie and Christopher Guest comedy.
Lol. That's a good way to put it. Yet another movie that was right on the edge, but didn't get on. Maybe if I had a chance to revisit it. I remember Janney being bonkers though.

from a search. I typed in horror movies for metal heads and it was one of them

I've seen the menu though
I think you would like it....
it's ok. I didn't remember it but it's also vaguely familiar so maybe I have watched it and just didn't remember it? I know these are favs and not best but it is tripy to see it in front of legit good Oscar winners. I had the nerd version of it on my countdown which I'm going to rewatch since I'm in a comedy/horror mood right now.

I don't feel like Knights of Badassdom was as good on the second viewing. I think it still has some good lines and I feel like its a generally pleasant movie. Just a tad more horrorish than deathgasam. Supposedly the movie we have is NOT the director's true vision but at this point we'll likely never get a director's cut. Ending could have been better. I think I idenify with it more since I'd consider myself more of a nerd than a metalhead. While deathgasam does have better ratings I think they are about in the same tier of movies.

That's why these countdowns are fun - something for everybody. Also, the Oscars are run by stuffy people who take themselves too seriously. Yes, I like a lot of those, and they are on my list, but IMO there is just as much skill putting together a horror movie or family movie that people want to watch over and over and connect with. That is why I laughed a bit in the other thread when you described me as a movie snob, because I knew you would be seeing just as many movies like Deathgasm and Planet of the Apes as you will Amours and Blue Valentines from me.

a movie about an inspiring athlete that might have the worst title on the countdown That title and seeing Shia Labeouf's name kept me away from this one when it came out.

Hopefully on break I will have time to post about the movies a bit more. The plan is at least to post the other 3 above on break, then I can post about the movies after work. I think 4 more tonight will get us to a perfect starting point for Monday. Starting around #116 we get a higher % of movies that I think people will have seen or at least heard of. Even more so when we get to our top 100. By that time we are getting into each of out top 50-55 movies and a bigger % of ones on both of our list. Promising Young Woman is the first one on the countdown so far that was on both of our lists. I had it at 91 and 80s had it at 83, but the combined score jumped it up. For comparison, Peanut Butter Falcon was my #73 and the next 3 movies are my #70-#72 picks on my list.

Many of these so far might not be what anybody had on their countdown bingo cards, but I hope there are some ideas for an upcoming movie night. PB Falcon is on Max right now - I was watching a little last night before bed.

I didn't plan it this way, but my "movie shelf" list is also perfect for all ages in dramas. I do tend to lean to darker R rated dramas, but PB Falcon and my other one today are pg-13, as are a handful of the family movies and action movies on my list. I think the two today would be good even if my parents are looking for something to watch and don't want a lot of swearing and weirdness.

I liked Traffic a lot, definitely watched that a few times. I probably haven’t seen it in 20+ years though

Benicio was great in this, although he usually is. His Star Wars role was pretty weak but im not sure that’s his fault. That one might be the worst Star Wars movie of them all

Erika Christensen was great too “oh, hi daddy”

PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN - 28PTS

Maybe not a movie for Dan, might be too heavy handed. I thought it was quite good and left a lot to think about. I believe @krista4 liked it as well. A young woman who was a victim of sexual assault turns things around hunting male predators.
THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON - 28PTS
I liked this one. Didn’t make my list but definitely would recommend. A rough crab fisherman is on the run where he unexpectedly takes up a personal mission to get a man with Down Syndrome to professional wrestling school to live out his dream. It’s got a little Huck Finn vibe to it as the odd couple adventure on the water in a boat getting into little adventures a long the way.

Was it her, or was she doing that on behalf of a friend? Or both?

I guess I’ll have to rewatch it and see!

Pretty sure it was revenge for her friend

What I found interesting about Dan's comments is two-fold:
  • movies since the dawn of time have been laced with social commentary and political issues.
  • I would argue that a movie like Traffic is every bit as "heavy handed" with social commentary and issues as movies like Get Out and Promising Young Woman are (i get he liked this one but i have seen comments that it was too political elsewhere)

Yeah maybe it’s just more so that it sucked and was extremely overhyped?

I still think you go too far here, but it's your opinion and all. I think it was too well directed and acted to suck. I reserve that for movies like the remakes of Black Christmas and Children of the corn I've seen in the last few years. There was some great ideas and scenes in here and I had a blast seeing it in the theater with a crowd. It wasn't on my list because I think the last 1/3 falls off and turns into more of a home invasion/chase type horror movie which is usually not in my wheelhouse. The scares and laughs also didn't hit with me personally has hard as other horror movies of the era. 0 issues with it being highly rated or being on this countdown though. If it was Us, you would be hearing some grumbles from me.

I liked Us a lot, almost as much as Get Out. It scared me more. Nope was a big nope for me though.
