#44: THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN - 84PTS

#17 on Ilov80s' list
This was beyond depressing. I watched it with a couple others before our Ireland trip and it was a unanimous decision to turn it off about halfway through. One of the worst movie experiences in a long time.
That is how my wife felt. The others in our group who went to see it thought it was great and very funny. Black humor for sure, but quite funny.

The Witch was a favorite as soon as I saw it. I loved the setting and atmosphere, and it genuinely creeped me out. Eggers is a bit of a nut when it comes to attention to detail, but I appreciate that here. The weird language and attention to detail with the buildings and lighting really puts me there with William and his family. Taylor-Joy in her first role as Thomasin is fantastic, but I also love the parents and the twins crack me up. My favorite complaint at the video store about this one was that it was stupid because you didn't see the witch.
I have generally not like what Eggers has done with his career. He is a great talent but The Lighthouse, Northmen and Nosferaturu weren't for me. The VVitch on the other hand was creepy as hell. That's one to watch IMO.

In the end (spoiler alert), I agree with you. I love his dedication to real sets and nerding out about historical accuracy, but his other three are more in the camp of me appreciating them more than I enjoy watching them.

I own a Black Phillip T-Shirt

Fury Road came in as my #3 most overrated movie

just driving back and forth in the desert for like 2 hours. With a rock band for some reason. And people love this movie
Sorry but I just don’t get it
You don’t like it when movies are slow and character driven but also don’t like it when they are fast paced action either.

#42: AFTERSUN - 86PTS

#15 on Ilov80s' list
A little Past Lives-ish. If you like that, you might like this. If you didn’t like Past Lives than I don’t think you would care for this. A young woman looks at photos and videos and her own memories of a childhood trip with her dad who was and seems to remain a mystery in her life. It’s not without joy but the overall tone is melancholy.

Mostly I've avoided it assuming that it was going to upset me and get me crying.

And if you like that then you should not miss the Black Mirror episode "Eulogy."

#43: CABIN IN THE WOODS - 86PTS

#15 on KP's list
This is the perfect horror-comedy. I love Tucker and Dale, but this one outdoes it.
There is one more to come that I have higher because it does 3 or 4 things well vs. 1- 2 like the others on my list. What I mean is that most of the horror comedy I like because they make me laugh and either is a good entry for the genre or delivers some funny kills. Tucker and Dale I love, but it's mostly comedy. Others like Cabin in the Woods do more with the horror and scenes with the Buckner's and at the end in the compound are would be scenes from a good straight horror movie as well. Why it's still at the top of the list is because of the added twist of what is going on behind the scenes. Such a great idea and the perfect pair to play Hadley and Sitterson. Fran Kranz was so funny as well. It was one of my favorite watches and surprises of this timeframe. Like Barbarian, I thought I was watching the wrong movie for a bit.

He needs a good bit of action and plot to distract him from his phone, but enough pauses and dialogue driven scenes so he has time to refill the bourbon and talk to his wife.

The speakerphone bit was classic.

I've been known to use the phrase "husband bulge" from time to time.

In the vein of Deathgasm and One Cut of the Dead - time for a mini-list!!

Horror/comedies from the 21st Century that it's possible only I will love, but had written down in the notebook:
  • Slither: James Gunn's directorial debut.
  • Dead Snow: love this movie and the sequel. the best use of intestines in a movie?
  • Bubba Ho-Tep: Bruce Campbell as Elvis and Ossie Davis as JFK in a retirement home? Yes please
  • Club Dread: very possible this is terrible, I just remember the awesome Bill Paxton role in this and finding it funny at the time
  • Deadstream: the lead reminds me of one of our better friends so I found him funny. Think found footage Evil Dead.

#41: MEMENTO - 87PTS

#14 on Ilov80s' list and was on @The Dreaded Marco 's list
Big fan.
I remember in 2000, being at work and just randomly catching a Siskel and Ebert segment on this movie and something about it just really interested me. I took my GF to see it, she had no clue what it was and I was trying to explain the memory thing and how I guess it goes backwards? We both ended up really liking it. I was blown away completely. I think I saw it 3 more times in the theater dragging other people to see it. When the DVD came out, I made a bunch of other people watch it. I became that annoying guy but hey turned out I had pretty good taste in this movie and director so I am only slightly embarrassed of my 18 year old self.

#38: SUPERBAD - 88PTS

#28 on Ilov80s' list and #86 on KP's list.
This came out when I was 25 so I was still in that perfect target zone for this. It's clearly held up as a comedy that will be passed on from generation to generation. McLovin is still legendary. Everyone knows him.

We are down to 37 movies left. 25 left that were on both of our lists. Of the other 12, you get a bigger dose of my weird taste. 4 solo picks left for @Ilov80s (#12, #11, #3, and #2). Mine will be the 8 of my top 11 that he doesn't have enough good taste to have on his list. ;).

Tomorrow we will start with 2 of those 4 from 80s - his 12 and 11. Maybe he has clues for his, I am drawing a blank
Around lunch we will have 3 from me. My surprise drama, my favorite family movie, and my highest rated foreign language movie
Dinner/night we will have 3 - two we agree on and one from me.

can't find the witch or the new world either. looks like I might have to do aftersun
can't watch this either. You have to have a hbomax add on. jesus ****ing christ
Streaming sucks for this reason. You log on to a service and you feel like you have 1000s of options. You make a list of 20 movies you want to see and maybe you have access to 3 of them. :wall:

#39: THE NEW WORLD - 88PTS

#13 on Ilov80s' list
It seems these lists have Tree of Life really high and I'm sorry that is not Malick's masterpiece. The New World is. It's transportive in the way it feels like you're really in settler times. More so than any movie I've ever seen. You are in Jamestown. You are with the Powhatan Tribe. It's both so beautiful and so grim.

Tree of life was probably my farthest drop on rewatch. I was pretty high 10 years ago, and I didn't finish it this summer when I tried to rewatch.

I actually forgot about The New World, and in my head is a 90s movie. I didn't hate Song to Song, but I still haven't gotten to his more recent one - A Hidden Life.

It's not a movie where a lot happens and you have to really absorb it. It's one I acknowledge really won't be for everyone. In other words, I hope you don't hate it.

Here’s my review

It was definitely boring, but not necessarily in a bad way

it depends on how much you want to shell out. I'm only paying for hulu+disney+ and amazon and peacock. That's $40ish i think. I'm sure there are people willing to payout more. I should get netflix and apple+. Earlier this summer I went to cancel peackock and when I did it offered me a deal-99 :2cents: for 6 months but now I don't want to cancel it so I can watch sunday night football.

No, even then. I had 6+ streamers and had the same issue, which is why i use the library so much and still buy movies. I make a list for stuff like the countdown or horror month and I have trouble finding specific titles streaming.

My lunch trio are odd:

The best remake/reboot of the 21st century
The foreign movie that started my love of foreign movies. A Tarantino-esque movie by a director who has shown up 2x on my solo list so far already.
A movie about a musician and a harmless two-word phrase that will get me to
