The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. Promising Young Women and professional wrestlers (20 Viewers)

Ok, I can't watch the Mariners, so how about a preview mini list for the evening? @Ilov80s are going to supplement the main draft with other fun lists and suggestions for movies. Yes, now you know a few movies that won't be on the list, so we will spoil things that way, but often it will also lead up to an upcoming pick. Anyway, in honor of The Peanut Butter Falcon, about this one:

Movies I loved but almost didn't watch because I thought the title was stupid.
  • Son of Rambow - a kid makes his version of Rambo type action movie as he escapes bullies and his family [Paramount+ ]
  • Martha Marcy May Marlene - told in flashbacks Elizabeth Olsen is a woman who escapes a cult. great performance [HboMax ]
  • Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon - a horror movie I suggest a lot. it just missed the list getting bumped out by my next horror/comedy on the list. This movie is framed as a documentary crew following a serial killer as he trains to become the next Jason or Michael. Loved it and suggested it so much at the store. It has that perfect blend of making fun of the slasher genre, but then turning into a good version of that same genre. [amc+]
  • Everybody Wants Some!! Don't know why I was so annoyed by this title, but also Linklater is very hit or miss with me. This is the spiritual cousin to Dazed as it follows a team of baseball players in the days leading up to the first day of college. I enjoy it more than Dazed. My first intro to Glen Powell, I believe [mgm+]
  • Hunt for the Wilderpeople name combined with title and I stalled on watching this one. Not a fan of Waititi movies, but this is the exception. [kanopy]
  • Ain't Them Bodies Saints Seriously, wtf? The only reason I tried it was because it had actors I liked - the younger Affleck, Rooney Mara, and Ben Foster. Like Waititi, I don't like their other movies, but I remember liking this a bit, but don't remember it. Mostly I saw the title when going through movies and thought of this category. [parmount+/kanopy]
Haven’t heard of any of those except the Linklater one. Now I know how all the other posters feel ;)
I have heard of (but haven't seen) Martha Marcy... and remember it exists because it makes me think of this song:

AMERICAN FICTION - 37PTS (ON BOTH OUR LISTS)
I saw this on a plane also, but in a time period where everyone gets their own screens and choices.

It was so much better than I anticipated even. So funny and clever premise.
Book that it is based on (Erasure) is great too. I love Percival Everett’s stuff.

I think it could have been better if they went with one story instead of trying to make 2

I preferred the main plot line but the family stuff was fine as well. It gave more depth to the main character as well.

I am not a tattoo guy, but this pick from 80s features some of the best I've seen yet
You're welcome
wasn't really expecting that. You gotta try the sing along version on Disney+
What’s that? I’m interested
After the you're welcome clue I knew it was Moana. I was reading the IMDB page and it said that on Disney+ they have a "sing along" version that has the song lyrics so one can belt out their best Know who you are

Fun fact: I took a class from Percival Everett.

James was a great read as well.

Also, @Dr. Octopus keep in mind i purposely chose x number of family movies for a variety. In that sense, K&S is a favorite, but i wouldn't say it it a top notch comedy in the bucket of Anchorman or others that might show up. I might do a mini list later, but there were a handful of odd family movies that hit with me and both kids.

I don’t think it would have worked if cut out the family stuff. The whole point was about the stereotypes about black life that get promoted in popular culture (drugs, gangs, out of wedlock, etc.), and backdrop was to counter with the incorrectness of the stereotype.

KICKING AND SCREAMING - 36PTS

Oh I get it! They showed all the Will Ferrell parts in the trailer and saved the actual funny parts for the movie! Smart.
:excited:
:<_<:
I’m a little surprised by that one, I just admit. I like Will Ferrell in some things but this movie seemed like a throw away movie with a few chuckles.

Since generally you don’t like comedies I’m surprised this one is an exception.
It surprised me too lol

Probably not as much as one of my top 10 movies, though.

I will for sure, I really like those kinds of movies

Next we have a 3 way tie - one on both lists, then one from each of us.

A movie in a favorite genre, with my favorite lead, by a young director I dig - wtf haven't I watched this yet?
A director I had on my list already dipping his toes in a blockbuster franchise and making the best entry
movie by a director from last night starring an actress from the trio of movies I just posted.
2. The Dark Knight
The director has shown up in the countdown already from my list.

That is a bad clue, because i have been bad about reinforcing which one is 80s and which are mine. KP movies are always the bottom one when i list ties. I will start noting them on the list on page 1.

some more clues in the same order KP presented them

This movie is about something that a lot of people don't believe actually happened
The events in this movie definitely didn't happen but some people treat it like a religion anyway
There aren't many war movies on our list but this is the 2nd movie to appear about a sort of war, even stars the same actor from the other

Love these. All 3 are repeat directorsfro movies revealed as well, correct?

2 of the 3 I believe. They all have multiple movies on the countdown but I think this is the first movie for one of them.

Geez. I have the damn lists and i am getting confused.
:loco:

Moana was on my big list, but it was more my daughters movie vs. "my" movie so I left it off. Definitely one of the bigger surprises for me as far as animated movies go, as I am not usually a fan of the Disney movies, but this and a couple others have been great from this era.

I believe that only leaves 2 more animated movies left on the list - 1 being a Pixar movie. We won't see those for about 50 more picks though.

Edge of Tomorrow does tail off a little at the end for me, but the ride to that point is still great enough to include it in the aisle. I like cruise as the smarmy guy trying to talk his way out of combat at the end, and of course I love Paxton in this. Perfect role for him. Now we have a ton of "groundhog day" movies, and I like most of them, but this felt like one of the first to kick off the new wave of them.

SICARIO - 38PTS

FIRST MAN - 38PTS

HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN - 38PTS

I probably didn't highlight them enough so far, but there have been 4 movies on the countdown so far that were on both of our lists: Promising Youg Woman, EEAAO, American Fiction, and now Sicario. I have most of the Villeneuve movies on 4K because his movies always look great. This has some great performances as well and a couple epic action scenes.

Harry Potter 3 is basically a vote for the whole franchise, but 3 is enough of my favorite that I singled it out for the list. I liked the decision to have the kids in regular clothes and showing silly interactions between them. To me it brought a breath of fresh air to the franchise. Cuaron's direction was great with the darker scenes as well. 4 was my favorite book, but 3 is my favorite movie. It is also a very much "KP" pick because I'm the only one in the house that likes this series in either form.

We have another odd trio tonight, and two I haven't seen. I am having trouble coming up with guesses for those. Long hint for mine:

Doc just brought up comedies and mine tonight is one of the few straight comedies I have on the list. Checks all the boxes: not overly long, a bit rauchy, a bit juvenile, has great side characters including the hottest woman over 60, and uncomfortable sex scenes. Ok, not all the boxes - I don't remember any rooster. ;)

SICARIO - 38PTS

Great edge of your seat gritty action movie about a FBI agents tasked with taking down a drug cartel leader from by the guy who made the Dune movies.

FIRST MAN - 38PTS
A very introspective and stoic telling of Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon centered around himseld a husband and father as much as him as an astronaut. The moon landing scene in the movie is one of the best scenes of the century, it's powerful. I actually think there is a great unofficiial NASA trilogy that I think people should check out.

1. The Right Stuff- this covers the very foundation of the American space program and many of their eary struggles. It ends with '63 and the first American to spend a full day in space.
2.. The First Man this follows Neil from his test pilot days in 61 through to the moon landing
3. Apollo 13 which begins with them watching Neil land on TV to the 1970 Apollo 13 disaster.

Those three movies give you quite a look into the hayday of the US space program as a scientific and cultural phenomenon.

#108: THE HANDMAIDEN - 39PTS

80s' #62 ranked movie

I still think its amazing how few of these I've watched. I hope there are more in the top 100 and God willing some of my fantasy movies.
Definitely not something I typically like. It has to be more of a sprinkle of fantasy for me. Not sure how many of the top 100 you will have watched either. I guess we will see at the end of the next couple weeks.

Perfect brothers and sisters themed double feature for you here:

too late, you already said you like some of them! I think there will be at least 2-3 more but even if there aren't we at least share midnight in paris (that was 80's though I think)
