Taking nominations for the guitar greats who are currently out there, but haven't established themselves as household names.....yet. If possible, try to provide a clip of their music so others might start to get a sense of what their playing is like.

My nomination is

, a cajun-blues master.

that is deliberately a total rip-off on Eric Johnson's style. I get the sense he isn't Eric's biggest fan. :D

Haha, at the risk of self-disclosure, my dad is close friends and has played/recorded with Terry. He's a phenomenal guy. Very down to earth and a great guitarist.

I think this guy may be the best guitarist on youtube. Famous in his country I'm sure but many may not know himn around the US. There's nothing he can't play on guitar.

He ain't never gonna give you a soaring solo, but considering his session work & value, the tremendous number of styles he's mastered and remembering how he's filled a hall with sound like no solo artist ive ever heard, gotta shine the spotlight on Ry Cooder as one of the underappreciated greats of the instrument.

Nominating Richie Blackmore. He was decent in the Purple Days, but he really has come a long way with Blackmore Night.

Very cool. Someone on youtube mislabeled that first song, though - it's actually "Do the Rump", a song by the Black Keys off of their The Big Come Up album.

Tab is from the same neck of the woods as I am. He's absolutely phenomenal.

I know this guys band gets slagged around here a lot, but....

I was a big fan of theirs back in their hayday

I saw them live a few times, and his guitar work was pretty cool

Antoine Dufour (one of my faves)

Fingerstyle guitarists in general...

When I was in HS the

I really liked his more recent Mambo Sinuendo.

Alex Skolnick: (From Wikipedia)Associated acts Testament, Alex Skolnick Trio, Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Attention Deficit, The Dream Engine, Skol-Patrol, Ozzy Osbourne Alexander Nathan Skolnick (born September 29, 1968, born and raised in Berkeley, California) is an American jazz and metal guitarist. He was a member of the San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal band Testament from 1983 until his departure in 1993. He returned briefly to re-record some old material for the band's First Strike is Still Deadly release, as well as the "Thrash of the Titans" all-star performance in 2001, before returning full-time four years later. He joined the band Savatage for the recording of Handful of Rain, as well as its follow-up live album and home video release Japan Live '94. He has also recorded and briefly toured with the Stu Hamm band, and played with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. In 2004, Skolnick made a guest appearance on Lamb of God's Ashes of the Wake album, recording a solo for the album's instrumental title track. After leaving Savatage, Skolnick fronted several projects in the Bay Area during the mid to late 1990s, such as Alex Skolnick and the Skol-tones, Exhibit-A and Skol-Patrol (a funk band exclusively dedicated to cop-show themes, both covered and original, featuring Michael Manring). He also recorded two albums with Attention Deficit, a 3-piece featuring Tim Alexander from Primus as well as Manring. Recently Skolnick relocated to New York City and began devoting all of his energies to jazz, enrolling in the jazz program at The New School. Most recently, he has been touring and recording with the Alex Skolnick Trio, a jazz group known for playing rousing bebop renditions of classic rock and heavy metal tunes.
Definitely agree...this guy is great.

The OP seems to be looking for younger players who might become bigger names in the near future. Ukulele virtuoso

....

Some guys in this thread are naming guys who are older, but aren't the huge names. That's cool, too. From that set, I'll nominate Martin Barre (Jethro Tull), Craig Chaquico (Jefferson Starship), Randy California (Spirit), and Kerry Livgren (Kansas).

Great calls on both Johnny Marr and Alex Skolnick, too.

This guy's been around over 30 years, but all of them under the radar: acoustic session man and soloist

(with J. Shimbukuro)Emmanuel can make an acoustic sound a heckuva lot like an electric.

Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster Cult probably falls more into the "forgotten about" category than underrated. TOns of great guitar solos in his songs (

Jebus, another great call. It's really hard to capture everyone. But it's fun to try.

Shawn Lane RIP

Guthrie Govan

Michael Romeo

Vince Gill

Brad Paisley

Brent Mason

Andy Timmons

all of them are sick and under appreciated.
