The under-the-radar great guitarists thread (1 Viewer)

Likely not a single person here has heard of my buddy Grant Garland

Hard Knocks Cover - He starts flat out SHREDDING at 2:50 or so.

Guy is insanely quick and ultra clean and can sing his ### off. Interestingly enough, Guitar isn't even his primary instrument.

He's currently heads the "Grant Garland Band"... the house band at BB King's Las Vegas.

Here's another clip of

with a couple other guys. His solo kicks in around 4:10 mark.Interestingly enough the guy on the far left who opens the track up is Kirk Smithhart... formerly of the North MS Allstars is the youngest ever recipient of the Albert King award from the Beale Street Music Society (Essentially a guitarist of the year award) that he won at the age of 18. He's got a nice solo that kicks in around 6:30.

Jan Akkerman

best soloist i ever heard (after Hendrix, class-by-himselfwise). saw Focus a buncha times back then and Akkerman in clubs a couple times since. master of discordancy, live - i remember hearing him make what sounded like mistakes during a solo only to hear him reference the same phrase again and do something almost thematic with it beyond that. took some getting used to but quite fascinating. spends too much time with the acoustic these days - a real ripper backinaday.

SON HOUSE....Death Letter

I really know nothing about guitar playing, but the first time I saw this, I was mesmorized.....
He is widely recognized as a pioneer in blues guitar playing. He is very not under the radar.
You nominated Prince.
:lmao:
 Pretty sure most people think of him as a performer and not a guitar player.
And I say this cause up until 10 years ago or so, I never thought of Prince as being a great guitarist.

Leo kottke is the best guitarist alive. Seeing as how most people haven't heard of him, he gets my vote.

Pretty sure the people who are aware of Prince's guitar playing outnumber the people who have even heard of Son House by a factor of 1000-1.

Derek Trucks might not be too under the radar, as he is the nephew of The Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks and tours with the Allman brothers band a lot.

Ben Lacey. He used to play at University of Kentucky once in a while, but I'm not sure what he's doing now. In any case, he can do some really phenomenal things on the guitar.

A friend of mine, seen here, used to take lessons with Lacey for free. Please forgive the horrendous quality and editing tagline, I didn't have any other options at the time.

Here's some of Lacey's stuff. He's definitely the rawest mother####er I've ever seen:

playing percussion line on guitar

Is this shtick? I know of Kottke, and I don't get it.
You ever see him live? A dude that finger picks a twelve string and makes it sound like a grand piano is ridiculous.
No argument, his right hand technique is smooth. I just don't find anything he's done even remotely musically interesting.
I'm not a huge Leo fan, but he has his moments.
