The USFL is back in business (1 Viewer)

They are going to obviously grab players not drafted and also players that simply are cut from NFL rosters so the quality obviously won't be there. A 2nd league that could exploit some of the NFL backlash could be successful but in all likelihood no one is going to do the right thing and have a league that bans anything that is not natural or organic in the system making it much more difficult for players to maintain absurd playing weights and strip the game back down to its roots. Baseball cleaned itself up and is now experiencing a new romance with fans who wanted the game to stay as pure as possible.

But anyways the USFL will premiere in March and will start in 8 cities, not sure which ones but likely NY, LA, Chi, and a few others.

Interesting. Why would it work this time around?
USFL failed because they tried to compete with the NFL for star players. If they stick to being a minor league like the USFL was originally meant to be it may have succeeded. Count me in as someone who would be interested.

Udfa latch onto nfl teams....which is better than playing in usfl.

only way this ever works if nfl funds it as their minor league system as mentioned prior.

It also failed because of dopes like Donald Trump who not only thought the USFL could compete for talent but also TV time. Once Trump got involved the USFL moved to the fall...disaster.If they stay in the spring/early summer, stay relatively small (don't over-expand team's-wise) and try to serve as an "NFL Minor League" (ala your local semi-pro baseball team) - they'll do fine.

More likely, the USFL failed when they made the decision to move to the Fall, then pinned their hopes on a lawsuit to force a merger with the NFL.

Isn't that what the UFL is right now? Or did that fold too?

USFL was never sold or marketed as being a minor league. It was marketed as being a fun alternative to the stodgy NFL. They raided (and tried to raid) NFL talent when they could. Herschel Walker was a prime example. The original concept was not to compete directly with the NFL by playing in the spring, that much is true. Trump screwed it all to hell when he pushed for the Fall deal. Still don't know exactly what he was trying to achieve by doing that (unless of course he got a nifty tax write-off).-QG

I still say all these alternate football leagues are doing it wrong. They should go pay top dollar for the best head coaches, and use free agents and undrafted players. The top coaches will coach up the players and make them good.

If I start this league, I offer Belichick, Harbaugh, Coughlin, McCarthy, Tomlin, Dungy, big money to come in. Then I sell the league to the public as watch the greatest head coaches go head to head as they build the next generation of talent.

This also causes massive disruption and chaos in the NFL, as you basically dismantle all the top teams and force many of them to change philosophies and direction.

I agree, it would be chaos. No NFL team has ever had to replace a coach before.

Its a coaches' game, IMO. You keep ripping away the best coaches, and it'll be a mess. Different coaches have different philosophies, and as subtle as they may be, it can have a great impact.

I hope they put the teams in cities that don't have NFL teams. Never have understood why my state of VA doesnt have a single pro franchise outside of the minor league. DC Sports dont count in my book.

Let's roll out the old team names...a prominent board member I believe has one of the USFL logos in his avatar.

Tampa Bay Bandits...that was a fun team
