The year of the rookie WR (1 Viewer)

Obviously we can't tell anything from the NFL draft.

In the year where no WR was taken in the 1st round, we have no fewer than 3 rookie WRs who look like they'll be a significant part of their team's future

Eddie Royal

DeSean Jackson

Donnie Avery

Then we have some who have come on fairly well lately

Chaz Schilens

Josh Morgan

Harry Douglas

Then we have some who seem to have potential to either be depth or start as shown by their play

Davone Bess

Keenan Burton

Limas Sweed

Devin Thomas

And that doesn't include some of the higher sought after WRs at the time of the draft.

Maybe it's just Royal, Jackson, and Avery, but this WR rookie crop looks good.

Apparently speed kills.

I don't know that any of these guys are ever going to be superstars, but the top 3 all look like solid NFL starters for years to come.

Don't sleep on James Hardy. Plaxico Burress only had 22 receptions for 273 yards in his rookie season and he was a top 10 draft pick.

When all is said and done i still think Devin Thomas will be the best WR of this years crop.

You might be right, but I think he'll always be 2nd or 3rd in targets on his team. Jackson may never reach ELITE status, either in FF or real NFL terms, but I think he'll be the best asset overall. Avery has truly impressed me, much more than I thought he would. I had thought Burton would be the better player.

Is Bess actually on a team? I really thought he would be good and looked for him in the draft, would have taken a chance on him in my keeper league but I didn't see any teams interested in him.

I think he could be productive in the NFL if given a chance after how he dominated in college but was that just the system.....?

Even if it was the system in Haw I'd say that system was more like a Pro type offense than most colleges and that he should do well in the Pros.

Btw I think Brennon will do well in the Pros as well but he has to do it on another team Campbell is emerging in Washington.

Oh well I did take F Jones and Flacco in our rookie draft and I think they have turned out as very good rookies now I have them for 5 and 4 years at $2 and $1 respectively so I'll be happy with the rookies I do have but watch for the value in Bess later this year when I can pick him off the wires for 3 years at $1 per if I'm not in contention at that time.

Dolphins.Yes.Not fast. Small. Could be a decent slot receiver but I don't think he'll be an overly productive NFL receiver.

Good hands and IMO if Pennington remains the QB, Miami is the perfect place for a player with his skillset. He won't be a great WR, but he'll produce stats like Ike Hilliard or Wayne Chrebet without the speed.
No kidding. Tremendous players besides the wideouts - Flacco and Ryan, Forte, Chris Johnson, Felix Jones, Slaton, and Stewart, Carlson and Dustin Keller, Mayo and McKelvin.
It's true, this class is looking VERY good overall right now, I expected this class overall to be good, especially the RBs but I am most surprised by the WRs. Let's not forget guys like Lofton, Horton, Phillips, Flowers, Chris Long, and probably a few others I'm not thinking about.

Jordy nelson is also looking very good with the opportunities he gets.
Yeah he deserves to be on the list. Probably be #4 for me after Royal, Avery and Desean.
A couple of month ago Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, Limas Sweed and James Hardy were on top of everybody's list... I think nobody expected Jackson, Avery and the "unpolished" Royal to have the biggest immediate impact...

Wow, that seems pretty high for him. I agree he's doing what he's asked to do and doing it well but I have to ask, why the love? He seems kind of lost in all the wr's that Green Bay throws to.
Who's been better after those top 3? Driver is getting old and James Jones has major injury issues. I think Jennings and Jordy are the future going forward there.

I dont think anyone was calling Royal unpolished, or else they never watched him play a game at VT. They were calling him small though, but i guess roids helps you beat the jam ;)

On this point, most who evaluated the WR class could not really separate the players in tiers. Many of the guys were too close to call. There was not one WR that was a sure bet. In this circumstance, football minds seem to veer toward the more physically prototypical players, guys like Hardy, Kelly, Thomas, and Sweed.

What about Mike Walker (Jax), he was starting to get worked into the system when he had a slight knee injury then an infection in the knee.

Not a rookie.I think in two years Jerome Simpson will be turning heads. A lot of WR take a few years to get involved in the offense ...

It is often I see that the early bloomers who find success early in their career, eventually get lapped by the late bloomers in time because those guys have more potential to fill. I would not be surprised to see D. Thomas and Sweed at the top of this list next to Royal in a couple of years.

Simpson and Burton were the two guys I expected to be late bloomers, but could be better than the others.

I jumped on the Douglas bandwagon recently and found it a bit interesting that Laurent Robinson practiced all of last week, but was still inactive. Granted, it could just be a case of "shaking off the rust", but I was curious to see how Robinson's return might effect HD, so I was surprised to see the healthy scratch, fwiw. Something to monitor...

I saw Sweed for the first time in NFL action yesterday and he still looks very raw. I believe he caught 2 critical first downs and was even the target of Ben's last pass, but I think most of his targets were due to Sweed's CB blitzing like crazy. He's alright, but that offense is a complete mess.

He's doing a great job at what he's been asked to do but nothing earth shattering like the top 3 have produced. It just surprised me that's all.
