These new apple beers (1 Viewer)

TheIronSheik

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
Are dudes really drinking this crap?

They seem to be marketing the hell out of these, and there seem to be a couple of different companies. Saw a commercial with my mom and she said, "I just don't see a straight guy ordering one of those." Is this really catching on? Or is this the new Zima?

They hit the spot after I've been out mowing the lawn in the hot sun. Can suck one down (or slurp one down or even pound one down if you're looking for some easy jokes) in a few minutes before moving on to the good stuff. Very refreshing.

A lot of women are drinking it. It's a response to the cider craze.

I'm not a fan of ciders, but I know some beer geeks, including a couple brewmasters, who can't get enough of it. The appeal is lost on me. Way too sweet.

How appropriate that Apple Jack comments in this thread haha.

I've had a few of the Apple beers, just too sweet for me.

Mike's Hard Lemonade FTW!
I buy the Black Cherry Mike's along with a 44oz cup of crushed ice from the soft drink dispensary at the local convenience store. Pour the Mike's in the cup with ice, use a straw to imbibe, and it's both refreshing and a quick buzz.

After the Mrs and I each had one apiece my 15 year old finished off the six pack. :banned: The only other person in the house, he somehow "thought" he would get away with it.

And some want to try these kids as adults.

Moderately popular at the college-ish bar I work at.
Is this like a hipster thing? Or is it an everyone thing?
Probably an everybody thing, but the only people I know that are into it might be considered hipsterish. Mid-30's liberal artists. I don't know much about the rules for hipsterdom, but they are good dudes that don't suck, so I think that disqualifies them. Some are known to wear the short cut-off jorts though and ride bikes everywhere.

Anyway many of them love cider and brew their own. The stuff they buy comes in a dark blue can (24 oz size). Can't remember the name (Ah, it's Crispin).

I'm sure chicks love it to. And the gluten free ####ers.

My brother does production planning for the Coors Brewery, and he just told me yesterday that the demand for their Redd's Apple Ale has far exceeded their initial projections. He says that they have really had to ramp up production to meet consumer demand.

I'm gonna have to try one of those, although I don't like cider much. I hope it's better than any of that lime beer crap, like the horrid Miller Chill.

Redd's is terrible, don't say I didn't warn you.

What about Angry Orchard? Thanks for the warning though.

Redd's Apple Ale is not a cider, it is a flavored malt beverage, not unlike the already mentioned Twisted Tea, Mike's Hard Lemonade, etc. These are drinks are similar to beer in that they both use malted barley for fermentation, but they certainly taste different. Ciders use apples for fermentation, and are their own category. Strongbow, Angry Orchard, Woodchuck, are all ciders, or alcoholic apple juice.

Redd's tasted to me like they took a beer and added a bunch of apple syrup to it. I've tried several brands and Redd's is the only one that made me :X :

It's the best one I've tried.

Kilgore > Hi :bye:

I'll drink a hard cider on occasion. I like tart flavors so it works for me. I mix my drinking up quite a bit though; stouts, barley wines, summer wheats, red wine, port. It depends on how I feel.

I like it as well. It's not that sweet.

The reason I asked about dudes is because in all of the commercials, it's dudes asking for apple or strawberry beer. I figure women would drink crap like this, but figured they were advertising with men to make men think that it's cool to drink it.

I don't care either way. I'm not a fan of flavored beers. Not for any other reason than I just don't like flavored beers. I was just asking because I was wondering if the advertising was working. It sounds like it is.

You guys that drink these things: Does it do a good job of washing the taste of dong out of your mouth?
They should put that on the side of the bottle.

"Gets the dong taste out of your mouth 90% of the time!"

i helped a buddy redo a section of a dry stack stone wall and he brought some of this out after we were done i had one and ended up putting it on ice it was not bad and hey it has booze in it so that is good but it was not my favorite thing in the world anyhow i do not get why people say who is this or that based on what they like to drink who cares you get drunk on potato i get drunk on potato just let people get drunk and worry about your own beer that is what my momma always said take that to the bank brohans

I have tasted Redd's. IMO, it's overly sweet, and tastes to me like a light beer mixed with sugar and artificial apple flavoring.

These brands are blatantly targeting (1) women, (2) cider drinkers, and (3) non-craft beer drinkers who want to try something different. In my mind, these products are no different than others like Blue Moon, Bud Light Platinum, Miller Fortune, Shock Top, etc....brands owned and marketed by brewing giants, positioned in the market to appear like a higher-end craft beer or cider (as opposed to their traditional offerings) in order to take the chunk of the ever-growing craft beer market. Nothing wrong with these beers or the breweries, but at least know what you're drinking.

These beers are NOT ciders. Ciders - and other similar fermented sometimes-fruity beverages like perries and meads - can be great when done right. But the apple beers I believe you're referring to are certainly not ciders. I believe Angry Orchard and Johnny Appleseed, for example, are actually ciders. In America, to label something as a cider, I think it needs to be at least 50% apple juice. While I don't know for certain, I would imagine that is why Redd's Apple Ale can't call itself a cider.
