This is why Brett Favre is a big deal (1 Viewer)

As a diehard Packer fan, I don't get why people are seriously mad at Brett. He was a legend who gave the people of Wisconsin more excitement than any other athelete in the history of Wisconsin sports. As a matter of fact, this clod is still bringing us excitement even when gone.

Any real Packer fan hates the Vikings more than any other team. For him to go to the Queens is an act of traitorism so awful that you have to commend him for it. Him being on the Vikes makes these games about 10 x better. When all is said and done, he will always be aPacker legend who is cherished. The only way he could screw that up would be to go into the hall of fame as a Queen.

In the event that happens, I am sure there will be people looking to burn his house down.

Just like any great literary character, he has massive flaws. These serve to make him more interesting, and even more human....making all of us relate to him even more.

 Because the "haters" feel better about themselves when they rip on a future HOF QB that holds most of the passing records and makes millions of dollars.

I guess I don't understand how Favre is a traitor for playing for the Vikings. Yes I get the whole rivalry thing and I'm as diehard of a Packers fan as anyone but they were a potentially great team that badly needed a QB upgrade. It made perfect sense for any quarterback to go there if they had the opportunity. Why should Favre pass on the chance to get to another Super Bowl merely because it would p**s off Packer fans? That makes zero sense, especially when you consider the Packers didn't want Favre anymore. That's a huge fact here that people continue to gloss over as if it's meaningless when in reality it's arguably the most important part of this entire story. If the Packers wanted Favre, he would still be their starting QB. He wouldn't be playing for the Vikings and he never would have played for the Jets. Ted Thompson made the decision to get rid of Favre. If you don't like the fact Favre is playing for the Vikings, blame Thompson and McCarthy because they are the ones who told Favre in no uncertain terms the QB job in Green Bay belonged to someone else. So why should Favre be hated for wanting to go to the best possible situation?

Stop it....you are making too much sense.

I have two issues with this:1. I will always hate the Bears more. With that hate also comes a ton of respect because of the Bears' many NFL Championships, HOF players and such a long tradition and history. The Packers and Bears have a lot in common, almost like twin brothers, so I will always view this rivalry as the greatest in all of professional sports and I will always want to beat them more. If the Packers were no longer an NFL team, I'd cheer for the Vikings well before ever cheering for the Bears. 2. Brett Favre will enter the HOF as Brett Favre. Although we count up how many players from each team are in the HOF, the players are enshrined as individuals and not a member of a specific team that the NFL or player chooses. The rest I agree with. I have no issue with Favre being a Viking, and I certainly don't hate him for it. The Packers and Favre chose to go in different directions that they felt were best for them, and I think it was the right move for both sides.

I admit it. I've come out and pissed and moaned about Favre as much as anyone. He quit on my team.
He did?
Absolutely. See, it was the Packers who offered him $20 Million to retire and he rejected them. They were loyal and he quit on them. It's pretty clear cut.
So the Packers wanted him to quit, and he didn't want to quit. So you think he quit on them? :coffee:
My thoughts exactly. Hey Packers fans, I'll give you $200 ( about the equal to what they offered Favre in athlete terms) to never watch football again in your life. You may love it but I don't care, I don't want you to do it any more. If you don't take this offer I'll consider you a quitter. Does this make any sense to you? I know you're going to say I'm not your team and you don't owe me anything where Favre did. BS the guy LOVES to play football and they wanted him to stop. You only have so many years in you're life to be able to do something like that and I don't blame him one bit for wanting to keep playing. He didn't quit on the Packers, the Packers wanted to move on without him and didn't want him to play for anyone else so they tried to force him to retire. He also almost retired for them like 6 times!
I think the problem is...you all act as if the marketing offer was done to force him to retire. He had already retired when it was discussed with him.And the deal was not something Ted Thompson thought up after Favre wanted to come back...it had been talked about as something to offer him when he retired since before he ever stood up there and cried (Andrew Brandt has discussed it in the past and he left before FAvre retired).

I would not go so far as to saying he quit though.

I don't think its just going to the Vikings...I think its trying to get there before he was even traded to the Jets.I think its the comments about sticking it to TT (and to do so he must stick it to the Packers).

And the "Packers didn't want Brett" did not happen until he told them he did not want to play anymore too.

There is equal blame to go around between Favre and TT for sure. Some never want to admit that.

Who cares. He brought us a lot of fun weekends with friends and family. Matter of fact, his involvement in the game this weekend only makes it more fun. Instead of concentrating on him, concentrate on yourself. Is the game better or worse for you because he's a Viking? The answer is better.

I caught myself actually disliking somebody for playing football. I'm a person that consciously tries to achieve a better life instead of dragging others down to my level. I'm not doing it anymore. Go Packers. I hope Favre is his same old self this weekend but in a losing effort.

Getcha popcorn ready.

Don't blame him. The Packers didn't want him and the Vikings were a good team with the potential to win a Super Bowl with him.

Stupid ego talking stuff I agree. Thompson's ego created a healthy share of problems as well. Like I said, I think both parties made some very poor decisions throughout that entire deal.
And the "Packers didn't want Brett" did not happen until he told them he did not want to play anymore too.
He retired and as I posted earlier he deserves all the criticism he receives for unretiring. That said he did want to play and the Packers told him they didn't want him. At that point, I don't have any problems whatsoever with Favre wanting to start on a potential Super Bowl team.

Clearly, I am on record as being a Packer fan and a supporter of Favre. And hindsight fostered by Rodger's success makes it easy to be forgiving.

But I do think that when Favre went to the Vikings he owed the team 100%. Whether his missing camps was due to genuine indecision (my belief) or avoidance of the work, missing camps has hurt the team more than just nominally.

Thinking of the P vs. V thread, one also cannot help wondering where either team would be with better play calling and in-game maangement.

Seriously.....just go away. That wasn't directed at you and you know damn well there are Favre haters on this board. Yet....you get defensive and have to reply.

Why does he deserve all the criticism for "unretiring"? I hear this all the time and I just don't get it. He's not the first player to do it and I'm sure he won't be the last. Even the fact that he had a tough time making the decision whether or not to retire for a few years doesn't bother me. In the normal course of things, your body wears down as you age. How much more for an NFL QB? Each year that passed it would take his body longer to recover from the last season. You would have to be questioning whether or not your body could hold up for yet another punishing NFL season. So it took longer each year for him to make that decision...makes sense to me. Favre is constantly held to a whole different standard than any other NFL QB. The perfect example is people saying he sucked playing for the Jets. Would they say that about another QB who was playing with an injured shoulder(and I believe a torn bicep)? He came in and led the Jets to a 8-3 record through the first 12 weeks. He played the rest of the season injured. I guarantee that if Manning, Brady, or Brees did the same thing, nobody would be saying that they sucked...they would be talking about the injury. Favre is an ironman for sure...but because of that people tend to place a different standard/expectation on him.

All the waffling, teary eyed pressers and interviews get old after awhile. It screams attention whore and people get tired of it. I mean this was happening for a couple years before his first official retirement with "I'm not sure if this is my last season." pressers and the like. It gets old.

Yeah, we have a million threads about what Brett does wrong. Thanks for dragging that crap into this thread. But the original intent of this thread is to illustrate why we care what he does. We care because the guy is awesome. He's an amazing talent wrapped in a cat you could sit and pound beers and play cards with. He's all over the media and dominates ESPN airtime because of videos like I posted above. This thread isn't about why we don't like him, there are plenty of threads for that.

Notice the tons and tons of Randy Moss threads? Or the mulitude of Ladainian Tomlinson threads? Or how about the tons and tons of Peyton Manning threads. See, nobody really cares about those guys, those guys don't really seem like "one of us." But Brett sure does. THAT is why's he is the biggest athlete in the world. Take the hate into one of the bazillion other threads. Who really gives two ####s whether he or Thompson did this or that? Does that have any impact whatsoever on your life? No. But your life is more fun for three hours every Sunday because of Brett. Just admit it. It's actually quite liberating.

These guys don't do this for just anyone.

The NFL is going to be a little less awesome when he's gone.

I did not realize that was the intent of your thread. Since I cannot contribute to the love fest beyond recognizing that he is/was an amazingly talented QB I will not muck up your thread. I am sure you understand that it is a natural consequence that people want to compare the perception of him, which is everything you said, with the reality of him, which is perhaps a little less shiny.

:goodposting: Guilty...I feel exactly the same as you regarding what Favre has brought to the game(and thankfully most of them with my favorite team). I just can't help jumping in when the bashing starts. The bottom line is that Favre gets people excited whether it's the love or hate. Like I said in my last post, people hold him to an entirely different standard. I haven't seen any Peyton Manning is a media whore threads even though he's on t.v constantly. I don't see any Chris Johnson isn't a team guy even though no one can convince me that his last run of the game last week was anything but a selfish attempt to inflate his stats. In fact, that's all I seem to hear about from him...how many yards I'm going to get this year.(whining about not being the player of the year last year). But Rich Eisen starts his "Favre watch" the second the season ends and it's Favre who is the media whore.

I think you should consider changing your name to Favrefan.
