Airlines hire them for a variety of roles: "pre-TSA checking of Cargo" onto the Planes; verify paperwork & shipping documents align, validate packaging is appropriate, internal training resources. Shipping companies are big into DG like DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc. There are all kinds of Freight Forwarder 3rd party companies.
DOT hires them for Ground Transportation package audits/ checks / State Highway Safety (Truck Stop Weigh Stations?)
Logistics / Trucking companies for Hazardous Material Transport (
NOTE: Truckers with a CDL + HazMat Cert get higher Pay)
Railroad cargo hire for review of safeguards and validation of Cargo. Some of these require more engineering due to "fabrication" of the Tank Cars, etc.
Sea Carriers / Shippers of Freight for the proper loading of Cargo, packaging requirements, testing of the containers, labeling validation
Packaging Companies who specialize in "UN Spec Packaging" for Hazardous Material transport (ULine etc)
ALL Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Pesticides, Paint companies- all these materials require Dangerous Goods review & classification; proper packaging info, documentation, etc
Any company that produces or ships materials that are regulated as Hazardous for Transport . There are also consultant firms that use this skill. Product Stewardship is a growing field in many companies.
As for the WFH, I use our internal tracking system to review the composition, application & physical properties. I classify it and define how it must be packaged to ship certain methods. 2 of the 3 resources on my team do not have any chemistry background. The "knowing how to look it up" and apply the regulations is the key. Nobody knows all of them... there are too many.
This is the
US 49CFR Hazardous Material Table. This is a great free resource. It is updated as needed. (Note that page will relocate soon).
