Those who work from home.... (1 Viewer)

Glad it helps.

RE: Dangerous Goods certifications.... There are multiple online training resources that meet the regulations...

Affordable" version = HazMat University  ~$550  online & self-paced (covers multi-modal regulations - US Road/Rail, Sea & Air)

Better Resource / Tougher training = DGAC  about $1400  (multi-modal regs also) but scheduled Webinars
If you don't mind me asking, what kind of business hires folks with this type of training? Big railroads? Airlines? And if so, what's the actual job that is done WFH? I'm intrigued.

Airlines hire them for a variety of roles: "pre-TSA checking of Cargo" onto the Planes; verify paperwork & shipping documents align, validate packaging is appropriate, internal training resources.   Shipping companies are big into DG like DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc.  There are all kinds of Freight Forwarder 3rd party companies.

DOT hires them for Ground Transportation package audits/ checks / State Highway Safety (Truck Stop Weigh Stations?)

Logistics / Trucking companies for Hazardous Material Transport (NOTE:  Truckers with a CDL + HazMat Cert get higher Pay)

Railroad cargo hire for review of safeguards and validation of Cargo. Some of these require more engineering due to "fabrication" of the Tank Cars, etc.

Sea Carriers / Shippers of Freight for the proper loading of Cargo, packaging requirements, testing of the containers, labeling validation

Packaging Companies who specialize in "UN Spec Packaging" for Hazardous Material transport (ULine etc)

ALL Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Pesticides, Paint companies- all these materials require Dangerous Goods review & classification; proper packaging info, documentation, etc

Any company that produces or ships materials that are regulated as Hazardous for Transport .  There are also consultant firms that use this skill.  Product Stewardship is a growing field in many companies.

As for the WFH, I use our internal tracking system to review the composition, application & physical properties.  I classify it and define how it must be packaged to ship certain methods.  2 of the 3 resources on my team do not have any chemistry background.  The "knowing how to look it up" and apply the regulations is the key.  Nobody knows all of them... there are too many.

This is the US 49CFR Hazardous Material Table.  This is a great free resource.  It is updated as needed. (Note that page will relocate soon).

Ty, interesting. I would assume most of these positions are on-site inspection, I never would have thought it could be a WFM type gig.

Glad to help.  Most logistics operations (trucking & freight schedulers) use a Software based program to maintain their regulations (Quickbase, SAP, Reveel)

Many corporations use real time software like WERCS, LynxOS, or SAP to manage the data and daily operations which allow WFH to be the "overseer" type function.

The hands on "shipper" is required to be on site to physically view the container (part of the regulations).

I know there's a thread out there and maybe this should just be a post in that thread....or maybe this question is its own thread worthy.....it's prolly not sponge worthy, but I digress..

What do you do for work?  How did choose this line of work?

I'm interested in becoming one of you, but I'm afraid of change🙄.

Seriously though, I'm looking for pointers on a pathway to work remotely.  I'm honestly not looking forward to more schooling, but if I'm motivated enough.....

I'm an engineer but the working at home is new for me.

Computer engineering is a great way for working from home as is just coding

Honestly—it’s terrible.  I think a lot of people are completely ignorant and tone deaf to the stuff that retail workers/servers/flight attendants/customer service personnel have to deal with.  A lot of people have jobs that protect them from getting spoken to badly  or abused by the people in their workplaces by having HR departments and things like that. If managers or co-workers spoke to employees  the same way that customers are allowed to speak to retail workers—there would be millions of lawsuits daily.  However—we get virtually no protection. We are just supposed to sit there—keep a smile on our face while people treat us like crap—and somehow not take the frustration home with us.  For those people who think that people who deal with the public don’t deserve higher wages—you guys don’t know what you are talking about.

I work inpatient psychiatry on a high acuity unit.  I take more abuse from the "customers" in one day than most of you see in a year, lol.  I honestly dont know how I do it (more like I dont understand WHY I do it).

Anyway, yes I think the current landscape of "the customer is always right" needs a change, badly.  My customers arent really customers, but actual customers are just way over the top crappy to the workers on a far too regular basis.

I can count on one hand the number of workers I have seen get out of line with customers.  I dont even know if I can count high enough to figure out how many times i have seen customers act in an absolutely despicable manner towards workers.

Oh, and I would love a work from home job.

What's the best WFH job someone can get into right now with no experience in the field?

Been working from home for 20+ years.  Started career as a DBA then moved to Sys Analyst and am now leader of an application team.  WFH is a lifestyle "must" for me.  I've formed my life around that aspect of my job.  Yes, it limits vertical movement to an extent, but I'm with my kids every afternoon and get the time with them taking them to/from school too.  Wouldn't trade it for anything.

I can't believe nobody has looked at the title and immediately thought of AC/DC

For those that work from home (BOOM!) WE SALUTE YOU!!!

WORK!

FIRE!

WEEEEEE. SALUTE. YOU.
