Thoughts about slow drafts (1 Viewer)

Maybe this isn't the right place to post this subject but I was curious about what is the acceptable length of time you'd expect a 20 round 12 team draft to take. We have a 12 hour timer Actually I can see benefits to them taking 10 days to 12 days it looks like the one I'm currently in is going to take as it allows you to see more preseason games and deal with injuries that occur during the draft. But it also really can drain you as those of us that have access to computers throughout the day keep checking multiple times a day only to find nothing has happened.

In this draft we've had draft picks traded 3 times (so far) They become very time consuming as the participants have to wait until another owner accepts or turns down the offer. I for one refuse to trade draft picks in redrafts and have other experts say the same. Basically as Rotoexpert's Scott Engel says all draft spots have their advantages and disadvantages in redrafts so stop trying to get cute and just play the hand your dealt. Every draft has certain players a falling below their ADP anyway. I know many of you are going to disagree with me on this. Just wanted to hear some of the thoughts of the experts out there.

A couple of times I've noticed the owner on line only to check in and out over the next hour either trying to decide who he wants or attempting to make that trade. I'm bracing myself for the crap I'm going to get on this post

Yes, they can be very draining on those of us with non-stop computer access and lots of time on our hands (like me and you). But many don't and are lucky to check in once per day. Drives me crazy but that's why they are called slow drafts, and yes....10 to 12 days is very likely. In my 6 keeper league with a 24 hr clock it took 14 days for a 10 round draft :loco:

I don't have problems with slow drafts in general. What drives me crazy though is when someone is two picks away and they don't use the queue option to make picks. It's an either or situation so instead of setting up a queue, they decide to wait hours to make their pick. Also, in MFL I've noticed on multiple occasions when it's someone's turn to pick and they've been on the site, but still don't make their pick.

I use antsports and they are all slow/email drafts. At first it's mind numbing. Over the years I've gotten used to it..it's not ideal. I would rather be drafting with my buddies at bone daddy's. But, im married with 2 kids & can't break away all the time. I'm in 6 leagues. So, it allows me to check the draft & pick when I have time.

Agreed. The last pick in our draft the guy was on and off a number of times in 1 1/2 hours before he finally made his pick. I think in particular the predraft option should be used in the late rounds of drafts when your grabbing at sleepers or take the best of 3-5 kickers that might be available etc. I know in some case they don't predraft because they are looking to trade draft picks.

I have a league entering its 13th season this year, that has always done slow online drafts. 12 hours would drive me insane.

We have 12 teams, 34 rounds, 18 starters and 16 bench spots... though much of the first four rounds are used on keepers. We used the following timer schedule:

Rounds 1-6: 4 hours

Rounds 7-10: 3 hours

Rounds 11-15: 2 hours

Rounds 16+: 1 hour

We ran Sunday without a timer, then kicked it on Monday morning in the early 4th. A week later and we just started round 31. I'm fine with this pace, finishing in about a week is ok. We've had drafts that went 2.5 weeks and people were ready to strangle those who took a long time.

One of the problems is, there is always that guy who will take every last second of his timer waiting for some breaking bit of news that will benefit his pick. Which is part of why our timers decrease the further into the draft we go. Granted, we have a more rounds than most leagues.

I know there are times when you are going to be away from your computer at work etc but would it hurt to post some chat and say I won't be able to make any picks for 10 hours etc. That would keep us from checking in knowing the owner won't be making any picks.

I love slow drafts. I think they're more fun than live drafts, because the anticipation just drags on forever. I used to have a 10-team league that did a 22-round slow draft with a 24-hour timer every year, and it typically took a full month to complete. We outlawed trading draft picks, though, because you're right that that takes forever. In a 3-round rookie draft you can get away with that. In a 22-rounder, though, forget it.

yeah, I'd guess 10-12 days sounds about right.

you know you don't start playing 'til the season starts, right?

I did this one slow 24 round idp mock a while back, and it didn't even have a timer, so one guy would take 3 days -- now, that's what I call a little excessive.

We do have a 12 hour timer so if you don't pick in that time the next guy is on the clock. You still get to pick yours when you get there but it could be after the guy behind you picks. My problem is that I work away from my desk quite a bit but probably check to see what's going on in the draft 50 times a day. I'm self employed but my work productivity kinda sucks during these drafts. I write it all down on a small draft board so I can better see what the owners needs are and whether I need to grab someone at a certain position trying to anticipate whether I can get players from the tier I targeting.

you should be able to set it so it e-mails you when it's your turn.or maybe even texts.if you find refreshing the screen every 5 minutes like a coked up monkey at a slot machine to be frustrating then stop doing it.
