DETROIT (AP) -Craig Monroe quickly found himself back in a pennant race Thursday when the Detroit Tigers traded the slumping outfielder and cash to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later.

The Tigers designated Monroe for assignment last Friday and replaced him with highly touted prospect Cameron Maybin.

The NL Central-leading Cubs will send a player to Detroit by Oct. 15. Detroit is close in the AL Central and wild-card races.

Monroe is scheduled to join his new team Friday night at Arizona. He has played all three outfield positions in his major league career.

The 30-year-old Monroe, who had lost his starting job in left field to Marcus Thames, was hitting only .222 with 11 home runs and 55 RBIs in 99 games.

Last season, he helped the Tigers reach the World Series for the first time since 1984.

Monroe batted .255 with 28 homers and 92 RBIs last year, then tied a franchise record by hitting five home runs in the postseason. He also tied for second among AL outfielders with 12 assists.

Monroe signed a one-year contract for $4,775,000 in the offseason, getting a raise from $2.8 million.

not a bad signing, but not a very good one either. he will play left field vs lefties (.302)

cant be worse than murton, who is not impressing me at all

How is this a bad trade?

The Cubs get a guy to platoon in the OF. He hits lefties well, and has pop in his bat. No one is saying he is an everyday player, but he is an upgrade over Murton who is hitting .250, and slugging .367 v. lefties. Further, Monroe isn't signed beyond this year, and the Cubs will probably end up giving the Tigers a no name prospect.

Great deal for a contending club.

There's ZERO way trading for Monroe is a great deal. You forgot to mention that while he has a .302 BA v. lefties, he also has a .312 OBP. That is awful. He's a corner OF hitting .263/.371/.634. That's awful. Awful.

Zero, huh? He fills the platoon need. He costs little from a personnel standpoint. Against lefties, I believe his OPS is better than any of the other Cubs outfielders (.833). And he is slugging over .500 v. lefties. How is that a bad trade? As a contending team, you are saying there were internal options better for the lefty/righty platoon?

No, but calling Craig Monroe a "great acquisition" just points out your organization's weakness at developing or acquiring players.
