Tiki Barber Retirement? (1 Viewer)

The broadcasting contract probably has an "out" should he change his mind about retiring, though. But since Coughlin is returning I doubt he would change his mind.

Which is rather ironic, since without Coughlin, it is likely Tiki would have lost more and more touches becoming a third down back once again, since it was Coughlin that both (1) cured Tiki's fumbling problem and (2) turned him into a true force and everydown back.Without Coughlin, Tiki is a talented gamebreaker in limited action. With Coughlin, Tiki had a chance (had he played 2 more years) to be a near lock HoF player had he remained healthy.

Giants RB T. Barber Makes Retirement Official

NFL.com - [Full Article]

New York Giants running back Tiki Barber officially filed his retirement papers with the league on Monday morning. "All along I've been firm in what I said, that this would be my final season in the NFL," Barber said. "I have had a wonderful 10-year career. I have a lot of great memories, I've made a ton of lifelong friends and I will always think of my NFL career fondly. But now it's time to move on to the next stage of my life."

TIKI BARBER TORE INTO TOM COUGLIN AT PRO BOWL

After the NFC practiced at the Pro Bowl yesterday in Hawaii, Tiki Barber tore into Giants head coach Tom Couglin while he was being interviewed on the NFL network by Rich Eisen and Marshall Faulk. Barber who's retiring from the Giants after Saturday's Pro Bowl game, intimated that Couglin is far too old school and somewhat out of touch with today's players. He said the coach has come the players way a bit but that he needs to go a good deal further if he's going to connect the way a coach should.

Tiki who is leaving the NFL while still at the top of his game after ten years, said he thinks Couglin should start doing more listening to his veteran players and not try to motivate them with constant criticism and negativity. The Giants all-time rushing leader said that Couglin needs to change his methods because players have changed and they can't be treated like they were years ago.

Barber also went on to say that the Giants coach made a major mistake by keeping them in pads all year long. He acted as if that wore the team down. Barber said he thinks the Giants need to decide on what they want their team personality to be, then stay with it. Tiki complained all-year long, that the Giants got away from their running game, any time they fell behind.
And from PFT:
TIKI WON'T BE MISSED BY TOM

A league source tells us that one of the loudest voices against Giants coach Tom Coughlin this past season was running back Tiki Barber.

Per the source, Barber routinely complained about Coughlin in the locker room, until other players politely told him to shut the f--k up. There's a strong suspicion, however, that Barber continued to bad-mouth Coughlin to the front office.

Every bit of this is deserved by Coughlin. Why did the Giants keep this guy?

(1) No coach deserves to have a "team player" undermine his ability to coach therefore costing a team the chance for a far more successful season.(2) They kept Coughlin because there was no good alternative. Better to wait one more year of being decent then try for a top coach than end up stuck with some other schmuck for three years while we give him a chance.

Basically, Tiki has moved SO far down my list of favorite Giants. I lost all respect for him this year. He was a professional on the field, but not off it - and the guy lacked a winner's heart, completely. He had a job to do, he did it well - except he then undermined his team. Good riddance and In a sick way, I am glad he retired before his stats put him in the hall.

I really soured on Me-ki this year.

I agree they should have let Coughlin go. But Barber was supposed to be a team leader, and team leaders don't denounce the coach publicly or in the locker room. Guys who do that are guys we usually consider jerks, like Moss or Jerry Porter this year, for example.

So if your coach is running you into the ground in practice, does not respect you as a person even though you have played hurt before, does not let you rest up and conserve yourself- you would not criticize his coaching style? Even though you think that these factors are hurting the team?It is not so much that I like Tiki - I just dislike Coughlin.

Even if we assume all these things are true....not publicly, no. You know it's bad when even your teammates want you to shut up. Who's out of touch w/the "new breed" of player again?Sounds like he's slinging pointless and idiotic sour grapes. He cried about not getting the ball enough in a Nov loss to JAX and said it was a "slap in the face" blah blah - after he'd carried 10 times for 27 yds. Yeah why would any coach shift to the passing game in those circumstances, go figure. Also I don't believe Coughlin is the OC, who is generally the guy calling the plays - why didn't he rip on Hufnagel? Thx Barber, for yet another reason not to watch the pre/post-game circuses.

Tiki Barber is a whiner and to me he was professional but lacked heart and passion

Good luck with your broadcaster career Tiki. I think you're late for your manicure.

I dislike both. I'd rather have Tiki and no Coughlin, than the other way around. But I have far more respect for Coughlin than Tiki.Even though I dont have a huge amount of respect for Coughlin, either (ie berates non star players, if afraid to confront plaxico)

i used to think tiki was a good guy but he is starting to rub me the wrong way.saying stuff about coughlin is kinda bush league but i understand it because coughlins an ###.but when tiki calls himself "great" and that he "has an incredible pain tolerance" he just sounds like he is getting too full of himself

Did you hear his interview after the last Giants game, I think it was the playoff loss but not sure. Guy could NOT have been more full of himself. It was ridiculous. "I know ive done so much for this organization, I couldnt have finished in a better way" - not exact words but he was ALL about himself and the Giants loss and lost second half of the season, which he played a huge role in, imo, were pretty pathetic.

I absolutely would not do it in public. That's childish. Talking to the coach in private is the way to handle it.

The Tiki quotes just keep on comin'.

Link

"Coach Coughlin is very hard-nosed, and I didn't get a lot of time off, couldn't sit down and rest myself, and so it was a constant grind - a physical grind on me that started to take its toll," said Barber. "The grind took its toll on me and really forced me to start thinking about what I wanted to do next. And that's not a bad thing. That's a good thing, for me at least. Maybe not for the Giants, because they lose one of their great players, but for me, it is."
"There'd be days where I couldn't move on Tuesday or Wednesday at practice, and he'd get mad at me for going half-speed. And I told him, 'Coach, I can't do it. I'm gonna be out here, I'm never gonna miss a practice, but I can't give you what you want all the time.' And he understood.

"We were in full pads for 17 weeks, and with the amount of injuries that we had, it just takes a toll on you. You just physically don't want to be out there when your body feels the way you do in full pads. And while it probably doesn't have a really detrimental effect on how you practice or how you play, it does on your mind. And if you lose your mind in this game, you lose a lot. And that's something that he has to realize. And I think he does [now]."
I've never liked Coughlin. But I wasn't aware until all this retirement stuff what a pompous ### Tiki Barber is.
