Tiki Barber (1 Viewer)

Yet another ex-football player spends $ like he has his own printing press and ends up on loser street. Either the seminar on player finances is worthless or these guys have learning disabilities.
Or in this case that you used to make your point, there weren't seminars on player finances at the time he entered the league.

meh. his motivation for coming back to the game isn't that different than most nfl players. it's just the circumstances that surround him are different. i don't think he has a shot in hell of making it in the nfl but maybe the arena league?

The latter. Taking a course doesn't change your upbringing and habits. Most of these young men need a 10-year seminar but by then, of course, it's too late.

I hear stuff about him doing this because he needs the money, but is there anything substantial behind these rumors? The vet minimum (today) for someone in his shoes is 750k...he could do autograph signings and make 100k, plus I am sure he still has residual TV value and could tuck away another 300k. I just don't see how this is going to "save" him.

From Yahoo/SI:
Barber's personal and professional life have been in shambles recently. In April 2010, Barber reportedly left his wife of 11 years, Ginny, for 23-year-old Traci Johnson, a former NBC intern. Ginny was eight months pregnant at the time. Soon after, NBC cited its morals clause and terminated Barber's contract, which reportedly paid him more than $300,000 per year.

In June 2010, the New York Post reported Barber was broke and couldn't pay his divorce settlement with his ex-wife.

My Tiki Barber Story

About 5 years ago, I was in Vegas with the wifey. We were having a few drinks a and started talking to these guys hanging out at the bar. They said they had a VIP reservation at Rain later that night and invited us to join them. We showed up around 11:00 and gave our name to the bouncer who escorted us past the velvet rope to the VIP section and sat us down at a booth big enough for 20. 2 hours later it is still just me and my wife sitting alone at this ginormous table. I look down at the table next to us and see Tiki and Ronde Barber with a couple of white chicks crammed like sardines around a 2 top cocktail table. I've never felt so superior in my life. We eventually got booted because there was no way my cheap ### was paying for bottle service.

Barber left the game in his earning prime and left alot of cash on the table. Right now the most he could possible get is the vet minimum, and that is if he can even get a tryout.

The thing is Tiki, you had ability. But painful as it may be, ability don't last. And your days of playing are over. Now that's a hard mother n' fact of life. But it's a fact of life your ### is gonna hafta get realistic about. See this bussiness is filled to the brim with unrealistic mother s. RBs who thought their ### would age like fine wine. If you mean it turns to vinegar, it does. If you mean it gets better with age, it don't.

Not likely. Who would pay for his autograph when even Giants' fans hate him? He was soundly booed when he was recently inducted in the Ring of Honor at the new Stadium. As far as TV career that is out the door. The dude is poison. His "nice guy" image is gone, after leaving his 8 month pregnant wife for a 23 year old intern.

the autograph thing only lasts so long and Tiki was very nice to the fans and spent considerable time signing stuff when he was a player.

Eventually everyone has one and you flood the market making it not a coveted item that everyone wants to pay a bunch of $ for.

He and Strahan...remember there was that time the Giants team seemed quite divided where it was offense versus defense blaming each other? It's a shame if he and Strahan aren't friends. Strahan has done a nice job building a reasonable post NFL career.

:goodposting: The guy threw a lot of opportunities out the window. The only reason Tiki got away with some of the comments he made on TV was because of his fraudulent "nice guy" image.

Antonio Pierce (ex-teammate) blasted Tiki on ESPN the other day, saying more or less the guy is a cancer as a person.

Tiki unplugged, and why he might be Steeler-bound.

From Peter King's MMQB

My educated guess, and maybe a little more than that, is Pittsburgh will be Tiki Barber's landing spot this summer when he tries to return to football after four seasons away.

The Steelers have a head coach the Barber family knows well -- Mike Tomlin is close to twin Ronde Barber after coaching him in Tampa from 2001 to 2005 and also knows Tiki. Tomlin wouldn't be afraid of the sideshow Tiki Barber might create, nor would he be shy about pulling the plug if the 36-year-old back couldn't beat out the likes of Mewelde Moore.

The Steelers have a core of veteran stars; Tiki Barber would fit right in. The Steelers have a good back, Rashard Mendenhall, but no back-of-the-future type who Barber would be robbing playing time from. And one NFL source tells me Barber really wants a shot to play in Pittsburgh. I'm also told that wherever he goes, Barber won't be content to be a mopup guy or insurance policy; he wants to play a lot. We'll see where he ends up this summer, if and when football happens, but Pittsburgh's my guess.

All the haters in this thread, lol.

I'm sure no one on this site ever had personal problems, huh?

This is about football, not his personal issues, who he sleeps with has nothing to do with what team he ends up on or if he will be productive. But all I know is he wont be the Giants, lol. Tiki said Eli and Coughlin suck, they do in my opinion, seriously...can Eli throw any more picks, and can Coughlin screw up any more games?

I remember when I was in grade school, people said always "just tell the truth"...now when people do, we hate, because thats what the media does, so simple minded people follow. I also remember back in the day when we made our own opinions. God Bless America.

Very funny you say this...I was listening to Mike and Mike the other day and Greenburg was talking about an athlete (it might have been McCoy) and he said something along the lines of "hey we like it when a guy is honest, but he should not have said that in public"...these guys just can't win. It's why guys like Jordan and Peyton seem like they are made of teflon, but it is really because they do not say anything at all. Without guys like McCoy and Barber, we would have 100 separate sports channels regurgitating canned lines. I thought Tiki was a little bit of a ##### towards the end (hey, so was Rice), but I also think the way the Giants turned their back on the best RB in their long history was also a bit overboard.Guy is going through some tough times and he is not saying he should be the best at his position, or even a #1 for a crappy team...poor guy just wants to play a game for another year or two.

It's not the telling of the truth people are "hating"...it's the idiotic choices people make. If you don't want to ruin your reputation, don't be an idiot. If you don't want people pointing out your faults and character issues, fix your character problems. To turn Tiki into the victim here is ludicrous. I'm all for giving people a second chance and not bashing them and shooting the wounded...but you have to expect when someone does something foolish, that they will suffer the inevitable consequences of their decisions.

the funny part is that Tiki bashed Eli and Coughlin who then proceeded to win a Super Bowl as soon as Tiki left the team. Talk about a cancer to your team... this guy ran his mouth more productively than he ran the ball.

I will be avoiding Tiki Barber at all costs in my drafts, i suggest you all do the same.

His attitude dont change the way he runs the ball.I already said he had made some personal mistakes, but I forget in a country where we preach god, and he says forgivness is important....yet we forgive no one, and still preach god. Hypocrites rule the world and and post on this message board.

I'm sure you never made a mistake, and if you have, your life should be over because of it.

His personal life has nothing to do with this, and shame on any person who thinks so, and for allowing the pop sports media to persuade your opinion. None of you personally know Tiki, so your opinion of him personally is trash in my opinion.

is that You, Ronde?

and it's God, with a capital G.....

Just speaking from a football perspective, what team is going to take a 36 year old running back anyway? Especially 1 who hasn't played in 4 years.

There would be room for a 36-year-old RB who hasn't played in a few years with a lot of experience and a little tread left on the tires. If he's in good shape, he could be an experienced backup and mentor/role model for younger players.

Unfortunately for Tiki...that's not Tiki. He's not a shining light in the locker room. He's moody, cocky and distant. As an effective starter, teams will deal with it. As a backup looking for a job, he doesn't bring enough intangibles to the table.

Not saying nobody would sign him (32 chances and 32 ways of doing business, and there's always Oakland) but he sounds like the exact opposite of what I'd want in a locker room.

How did the Giants turn their back on Tiki?
:goodposting: Tiki was the one that complained openly about Strahan's 2002 contract negotiation, saying he was being greedy, when the new contract helped the Giants with the salary cap. Tiki bashed Couhlin after the 2005 playoff loss to the Panthers and a 2006 regular season loss to the Jaguars. Before his last game, Tiki said Coughlin talks down to and demeans him. He never mentions how his production increased once Coughlin arrived. He bashed Eli several times after he retired, which seemed to me, like he was trying generate attention to advance his broadcasting career.

The Giants didn't drive him out or release him. He chose to leave.

I would like to see him contact Ahmad Bradshaw and work with him on his fumbling. Tiki has said he'd talke to him if contacted, but I'd improve my opinion of Tiki if he contacted Bradshaw and offered to give some pointers.

Everything, huh?Wow, if thats how you think it should work....what news station you work for?

Your personal life has everything to do with this message board, how you interact, does that mean I can attack you? :sarcasm:

His public comments about his former team and teammates has to do with how he interacts, not who he cheated on, or his media career. That has nothing to do with anything.

Sensationalism at its best! Also, most of the bad stroies coming out were broke by NBC, bias much? Hmmm, they dont like him, maybe he slept with Florios wife or something to get the hate he is getting their.

Maybe NBC should hire for talent, and not name, as they wanted just to chase some ratings. Tikis flop was brought on by NBC, IMHO....they didnt have to label him the next "Matt Laurer"....but nope the media is never at fault, especially NBC.

I judge people on how they treat or effect me...Tikis only effect oin me is football/fantasy football related, I'll judge him on that, as he should be.

Also, I would like to hear your answer to this...

If you cheat on your wife, or get fired from your job...is it our bidness? If you say yes, then feel free to talk all you like, if you say no...then I will not expect another post from you here in this thread, unless its talking about his football ability.

You don't think Tiki Barber's relationships with his teammates isn't football/fantasty football related? I'm also curious as to how Tiki's flop was brought on by NBC. The only thing they did was fire him after his affair came out. Of course NBC wants ratings, how naive are you? That's their job to increase ratings to increase ad revenue.

No, his past relationships with certain players from a past team has no relation to his future team relationships or play.LOL, as a person who works in tv/radio, you are the one who is naive. They gave Tiki the title of the next "Matt Laurer", not Tiki. Tiki did his job, good, meh who cares...cuz that has nothing to do with his football play.

And I noticed no answer to the question stated above, because you too my friend if you live in a glass house, you should not throw stones. But its easy for everyone on a message board to be big and bad and talk smack. Tell us some of your personal issues, I'd love to attack you on stuff that is none of my bidness.

Being in the public eye and not getting your privacy, is a term the media created with their brainwashing and sensationalistic views to get you to think if they are famous, their personal life is public. Like I said, people without their own views and who are naive, can attack Tiki easy.

Since when do we stop caring about the game of football, and care more about the drama the media creates? And if someone cheates on their wife, I dont believe in that, but its still none of our bidness....and if you do think it is our bidness....get your own life.

His personal life has everything to do with how he gets along with his teammates and why he is no longer on TV.
Everything, huh?Wow, if thats how you think it should work....what news station you work for?

Your personal life has everything to do with this message board, how you interact, does that mean I can attack you? :sarcasm:

Wanna bet on that?Tiki spent his last year in the NFL boasting to every reporter he could find that he would be interviewing Presidential candidates once he left the league. He failed as a reporter, and failed miserably.

Yes, as I'm sure NBC took no part in how he should promote himself. Everyone in the media determines what they say, lol. If you believe that, then you never worked in the media. Also he was not a reporter, he hosted the cooking segments, and a few interviews in studio. He did a few reports here and there, but not enough to call him a reporter. They were making him an anchor, where his interview skills may lack, I find it still very hard that any of that matters to his playing ability.

Look, I'm not saying the things that hes done in the light they are show, are right. But as he says, he is leaving the media world to return to football, fail or not...whats it matter? To critisize says you never failed at anything.

I do not understand this thread as none of it matters to his playing ability. If he failed in another career only many dream of doing, or cheated on his wife with circumstances unknown....whats that matter...it dont change if he can run the ball or not.

...his age does. But I'll still hold out on judging that until I see him run.

Haters just hate, its what they do to survive, so breathe your air and hate.

I don't think Tiki's personal issues are 'out of bounds' because objectively they're central to his quest to play again. In the interviews and quotes I've seen from him, Ronde and others, Tiki feels lost and believes that football is a way to regain a sense of self worth. It's an understandable quest, regardless of whether it's likely to happen.

The Steelers are sniffing around, seeing how Mendy is the clear cut #1, and if M. Moore is not resigned, the Steelers would have Redman and Dwyer as their backup RBs. Neither is a pass catcher, 3rd down type.

Steelers also sniffing around Plaxico. Not as much "need" since Steelers have Ward, Wallace, Saunders and Brown, plsu H Miller at TE, so they dont "need" Plaxico. The one thing he could offer is goal line type options, fade to the corner(like in the Super Bowl w NYG). Other than that, he doesnt fit their offense, their other WRs are burners(not Ward), but the other 3 can flat out scoot.

I'd rather them take Plax money and get another OL free agent, or take a flyer on a MLB or safety, Clark and Troy arent getting younger.

T Barber before T Coughlin -1211 rushes 44 fumbles, after 1006/8. I don't know anything

about Tiki's self promotion before he took the job as a "reporter". I do know he threw his

former coach and QB under the bus. Maybe T Coughlin criticized -"demeaned"- Tiki because

he saw a player that could be better. Coach's push buttons and it seems it worked.

3 years in a row of 2000+ yards of scrimmage. I think a team may give Tiki a chance for

one simple reason -the short offseason.

Teams may not know what they have with a rookie RB in pass protection or a 2nd/3rd year

player with questionable pass protection skills. $750,000 is cheap insurance for protecting

a QB. I don't think Tiki will make any impact but he might get a shot. T.O's been given how

many chances after bad mouthing two QB's?

Tiki Torch is a personal issue train wreck. He has many issues in his life, but when I see someone getting names called his way for defending the dude, is that really needed. Somethings never change on here I assume.

Its obvious people dislike Barber, so no matter what anyone says if its not ripping Barber in this thread, you cant win.

Barber should be able to produce a bit in the NFL, we all see injuries happen, he will be needed somewhere. I say his best bet is to wait a bit, then sign with a team that needs a RB.

Football Critic's confrontational/childish posting style is rather tired.
I can't figure out if he is 13 or just that stupid.
Raider Nation and Thayman, who knew they would attack me. What am I stupid about? :rolleyes:Call it what you will, that just means your argument about Tiki is nothing but hate. Its so obvious.I am confrontational, yet I say nothing about you like you just did me, I just say why you should stay of Tiki...lolI mean your a Raider fan, how much sense can you have? What does that have to do with anything, I dont know, but about as much as Tiki cheating on his wife and his "failed" media career has to do with his playing ability.Since you started with names, cuz thats what you do, and we are talking stupidity... how stupid do you look when you have "Devils Advocate" under you logo to the left here, yet you attack when someone else plays Devils Advocate? LOL, does that not spell stupidity?

What does that have to do with anything, I dont know, but about as much as Tiki cheating on his wife and his "failed" media career has to do with his playing ability.

Anything and everything you decide to open your mouth about.
