I, like most others, have been doing serpentine drafts for awhile now, ands its been fun up to now. However, I'm beginning to tire of the same old thing and woul like a change. Last year I played salary cap football for the 1st time. I'm sure most people know what this is, but just in case, here's a quick run down. You have a set amount of fantasy money to field a team of starters (no back-ups). Every player is assigned a $ amount based on past performance and future speculation. You can pick anyone at any position as long as he fits under you salary cap. The way I see it, there are pros and cons to this.
PROS
1. There is more week-to -week activity then standard draft leagues. Every week you have the option to keep the same lineup or make changes. You may want to upgrade at one position to a "stud" or you may want to get that sleeper guy that has a very low value right now.
2. Injuries are not as big of a concern. In a standard league, if your 1st rounder goes down, you may be done for the year. I know that this doesnt have to be the case, but it sure hurts. With salary cap football, you are only hurt for that week. The following week, you simply find someone else to take his place.
3. The "luck" factor. This year more then ever, we seem to be throwing darts at a board for our picks after "the big three." With salary cap, you arent locked into any picks. If the guy you thought was going to break out this year doesnt, then move on to your next sleeper candidate. I think it takes more skill to manage your salary cap and field the best team each and every week. You can constantly find the matchups that will favor your guys.
4. There is no risk of collusion.
CONS
1. Lack of a true draft. The draft can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the season, particulary if its a draft where you are actually together with your league, as opposed to internet drafting. But the draft is like Christmas. There is so much build up, then its here and gone befoer you know it.
2. Lack of trades. Trading can be very enjoyable sometimes, and with salary cap football, trading is eliminated. Of course, some may say this is a positive, as there cant be any trades that throw the entire league out of balance.
I know that luck will always be a factor in fantasy football of any sort, but it seems to me that salary cap football helps to eliminate some of the luck and emphasizes more skill in roster management. I am also aware that auction leagues are better then standard leagues, but most os us play over the internet, and auctions are hard to conduct over the internet.
Please dont flame me just because I threw an altermate idea out there, but I'd be curious to know how others feel about salary cap fantasy football.
Thanks.
