Time to Give Up on James Davis? (1 Viewer)

Why would you drop him? His first game he had 4 carries and was nicked up from a car accident. His second game he didn't play due to a shoulder injury. Nothing has changed, particularly since he was viewed as a candidate to take the job later in the season, not at the start.

 
I have a shallow bench and thus dropped him. Of course, I have it in the back of my head that I can't wait too long if I hope to pick him up prior to a coming out party. The minute that coming out party starts to become apparent, it's too late.

All that said, I think Cleveland has to switch QBs before this matters since I don't think the dink and dunk Quinn show gives the offense/running game an ounce of life either way...

 
The reason to give up on Davis would be if you think Jamal Lewis has shown enough to hold down the job. That is, and always has been, the barrier to Davis playing.

So far Lewis has been who I thought he'd be, so I'm holding onto Davis.

I suggest being patient:Jamal Lewis (undisclosed) was not on the field for the start of Browns practice on Wednesday. Rookie James Davis, who was inactive in Week 2 with a shoulder injury, did appear for the opening portion. Lewis' status for Week 3 appears to be uncertain, though we did not see him suffer an injury last week against Denver.Sep. 23 - 1:39 p.m. ET Source: Cleveland Plain Dealer
 
Depends on the league. I dumped him in a 12 team redraft for Manningham after week 1, but in my deep bench 12 team keeper in which I'd lose a 15th round pick if he is kept next season he is still on the roster.

:kicksrock: Everyone's roster is different but if you drafted this guy I certainly hope you were expecting a ceiling of a 3rd/4th fantasy RB in the 1st few games. I would only be dropping him for a player that can contribute immediately. Otherwise he still sits in the kitty along with the likes of Donald Brown. He is not going to start for me anytime soon but the upside is certainly there.
 
agree that it all depends on the roster/bench size... had to cut him in a couple leagues, kept him in the deep keeper league... i do have him targeted to re-acquire in a few weeks once the Byes have played out

 
Jamal Lewis, RB CLE

News: Browns running back Jamal Lewis was not on the field for the beginning of practice, leaving his status for Sunday's game at Baltimore in question. He had suffered a stinger in the season-opening loss to Minnesota. Lewis, who has rushed for 95 yards this season, was in the locker room but then wasn't with his teammates as they stretched and went through drills during the 30 minutes of practice open to the media. The Browns had no immediate word on Lewis but will release an injury report later on Wednesday.

i agree 100%. he sits deep on the bench just in case the gamble you took picking him up (or drafting him in the last rounds) pays off. It's a calculated gamble since it seems plausible that Jamal will lose the job or come apart at some point in the season. But even as a best case scenario, i wouldnt expect him to become relevant before half way through the season.It's a Buy and hold investment for sure. Hopefully it pays off
 
Here is another new report. We all knew this would happen, I hate that he will be judged playing the Ravens but give it time. For some reason, I believe in this kid.

Jamal Lewis missed Browns practice Wednesday with a hamstring injury.

Lewis struggled badly (14 carries, 38 yards) in Week 2. We don't know when he got hurt, but 30-year-old running backs with as much tread on their tires as Lewis are always poor bets to stay healthy. James Davis (shoulder) is back, so the Browns could use a Davis-Jerome Harrison rotation at Baltimore.

My original target was after the BYE week, which is week 9. At that point, the Browns will likely be 1-7 or 0-8. I think that's where you might see Davis given a full time shot.

 
If you've got him I'd hold on him for now. Anderson has been named starter (at least for this week) and that should mean a bit more downfield passing which should open up the running game a bit more. Of course, Anderson will have to keep the job...

 
Absolutely give up on him. If a rookie backup RB doesn't become a superstar in his first three NFL games, he likely never will.

 
I dropped him after Week 3 for Tashard Choice.

Even if J Davis got 75% of the work for Cleveland, he'd still be a RB4 for you at best. He has almost no value in a redraft, think Larry Johnson. I'd dump him for anybody with upside from a better team.

He is NOT the #2. I don't care what any depth chart says. Jerome Harrison is the #2 back.

If you're talking about holding on to a third string back for a team that has scored 1 rushing TD in the last 10 games... :bag:

If it's dynasty, ok sure. If this is redraft, please move on already.

 
I dropped him like a turd today, which means he's due for a big week this Sunday. I'm sour on all Cleveland players as the ones I've had on my ff teams historically ##### the sheets on a regular basis. This year is no different, except the Browns are even more inept than usual on offense. I'll take my chances with Mewelde Moore as my fourth RB instead. At least he has some upside on a much better team and a body of work in the NFL.

 
Even if Davis does supplant both Lewis and Harrison, what's the upside, really? You have the starting running back on a team that has scored one offensive touchdown this season. Yippee. I think it's safe to let him go.

According to NFL reporter Adam Caplan (via twitter), the Bronws placed RB James Davis on IR today.

ETA Schefter also reporting this.

They brought up some UDFA grad from Arizona off the PS instead of Peerman.

You're owed nothing from any Davis owner. Lots of players are hyped and don't pretend as though you always know which ones blossom and which ones don't. if you did, you'd be doing more with that info than playin FF. Who could have predicted an automobile accident and then an injury? if you're looking for an apology, look elsewhere!

I'm pretty sure his car accident had something to do with this, so I don't think you're owed anything. Besides, even if it wasn't the car accident, when you questioned the hype, I don't think it was phrased as "I don't think this guy is going to do well because I suspect he will be on the IR after receiving ~10 carries!"This injury proves nothing about anyone's attempt at assessing James Davis's potential production. The Shark Pool as a whole needs to stop begging for credit, especially when it isn't due.

This is a 7th round pick with no measurables who lit it up against guys who are now changing my oil for a living.

I never, ever understood the hype, even if Jamal Lewis is old, slow, and tentative.

He'll be fighting for a roster spot next year. Heir apparent? :no:

Davis was well thought of before Clemson's disastrous 2008. Sample scouting report: "Davis earned a second-round grade from the NFL Advisory Committee in 2007 after rushing for more than 3,000 yards and 36 touchdowns over his first three years at Clemson. But the two-time first-team All-ACC pick elected to return for his senior season, again showing a player's stock doesn't always increase by returning to school. He rushed for only 751 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2008; still, Davis flashed the speed, power and aggression to run over defenders to be a fine NFL back in his limited chances behind a struggling quarterback and offensive line. In the right system, he could contribute immediately. Had an arm span of 30 1/2 inches and a hand span of 10 inches at the combine."

That's not really true. There was a lot of talk that he was a border line 1st round pick if he had entered the 2008 NFL Draft. Instead he stayed for his senior season and became a 6th round pick. Plenty of reason to think the Browns could have found a diamond in the rough, but now we won't know until next year.
