Curious little move here that lead to some tea leaves reading.

I thought I would get other's opinions.

The Colts released Darren Evans in order to sign a safety. They then made it public that they definitely will resign him to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

So that indicates they like him some but had to make room for this safety. So, if they needed a spot so bad that they risked losing a player they like somewhat, why not IR Peyton Manning?

By all accounts, the general word is Manning is out for months and the colts have shown no sign to be competitive or alive for the playoffs by the time he returns.

What are the odds that this reluctance to IR Manning is an indication that the Colts either definitely plan Manning to be able to return somewhat sooner OR that, even if they are out of the running, that they plan to let Manning play at any point he may be able to return (I can definitely see manning's mentality being to play when he is healhy even if the team is eliminated)?

Could also mean that they don't want to wave the white flag on this season just yet. Putting Manning on IR could be seen as doing just that.

That would mean an open admission, for sure, but when the rubber meets the road, don't you keep the players you want for the future?

The Colts might be 0-12 and if Manning is healthy, play him the last four games. I don't think we can just assume that Manning is going to be Manning again, and the Colts probably feel the same way. Do they want to go into the off-season having no idea if their QB is going to be the same again?

I think you're reading too much into it. There are plenty of guys that teams would like to have on their practice squad but aren't crushed if another team signs the player instead. The possibility of getting Manning back late in the season and reassuring season ticket holders that 2012 will be worth watching is far more valuable than stashing another RB on the practice squad.

How ironic that this might very well happen given the Colts history of doing the exact opposite in resting players in the late weeks of the season. This could have a very real impact on both playoff races AND the Luck sweepstakes.

good question. And that's the idea of the thread (to get an assessemnt of when/if the Colts players will have value this year).

They were talking about it on the Dan Patrick show how Manning could be available for the end of the season but it really depends on how well the Colts do the next 5 games.

I don't disagree with the premise but at the same time I don't think people need sold on the idea that much either because in the end, although media will have speculation, most people will assume that a season with Peyton manning will assuredly be worth watching. On the other hand, there is a lot of risk of bringing him back and perhaps playing him too soon or getting him hurt in a meaningless game. And that is why I lean towards the idea that the Colts do not believe the games will be meaningless upon his return. Most teams simply can not hold a spot open for a player the entire season. Even in cases where defensive guys tear their pectorals and its like a 10 week injury; even those guys never get held on to. they go to IR even when the team desperately needs them (Jackson, dumervill the past few seasons).

Is that based on the typcial reported "2 months or so" timeline? I guess since they have said all along that no one knows how long it takes the nerves to regenerate, that maybe somebody is setting on some information that makes them think that things are going good and maybe he is back in 6 weeks. With the bye, a Manning that came back with a 3-5 team could still be very much in the mix.

Actually if they are in line to get Luck, I think they would be ok with some uncertainty about Manning's future during this off season. Why run him out their with no chance at the playoffs and lose out on potentially getting Luck (if their record is that bad at that point in the season). Let alone giving Manning more time to really recover through the off season.
