Time to Protect the RB? (1 Viewer)

I have felt for some time that, for better or for worse, RBs have been the "Kamikaze Pilots" for NFL teams while QBs are protected by the Secret Service.

While QBs are sliding, running out of bounds, and have rules established to protect themselves from hits... RBs are pushing piles, keeping the legs churning, and trying to grind out that extra yard or two even after 2nd and 3rd contact. Overall, a QB's shelf life is 2 to 3 times longer than the typical RB.

Is this the way it is or can the RB be protected to prolong their careers or at least minimize the number of injuries they endure? Do they really need to look for contact? Do they really need to grind out a run to gain an extra yard or two (except perhaps near the goal line)?

I know that QBs are more susceptible to the high impact hits that increases the potential for concussions... but the league goes to extra lengths to protect them while RBs seem to have very few rules to protect them. Should that change? Should the role of the RB be rethought?
