Time to relocate the Chargers again (1 Viewer)

Albuquerque?!?  The city has less than 600,000 people and the metro area has just over 900,000.

Why not Fresno in that case? (I kid).

I do think at first glance San Antonio would be the most logical (aside from a return to San Diego with different ownership).

After that pickings are kinda thin - Mexico City?  Oklahoma City?  If it were Toronto you'd have to put a team into the AFC West (Houston?) And I don't think shifting thr Dolphins to the south would be a popular move.

St Louis could be complicated if an option.

Really wish the team got sold and moved back to their true home.  Would be the best solution for sure.

San Antonio Chargers

put a horse on their helmet.

done deal.
They used to have a horse on the team emblem, although you don't see it often anymore.....

I actually really like these concept logos that incorporate a horse for a new logo.....

... at least in part because they also have the bolt in the logo in a less obvious way.

If the chargers moved to San Antonio AND changed ownership I would root for them again. Charles Butt are you listening?

yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking as well with those horse logos. From a design standpoint, the bolt as the horse's mane is really clever and well done.

I think we solved the problem, folks. San Antonio Chargers by 2022.

San Antonio Chargers

put a horse on their helmet.

done deal.
San Antonio greater metro area 2.3 million population.  Good size.

Monterrey Mexico 4.6 million, double/great size.  Their are only 13 US cities with greater metro area populations, all of them have NFL franchises, some metro areas have more than one franchise and many fans fall within and overlap/switch fan loyalties.  They compete  for the same fans so no growth only gets spread back-and-forth.

Monterrey had a brand new stadium built in 2015.  It would not compete with any existing NFL franchise fan base as it is more than 1,000 miles from any WC or Arizona team but is less than 300 miles from San Antonio who does not have an NFL franchise and is over 570 miles from Dallas and over 500 from Houston who compete for the same fans.  IOWs those franchises would not be threatened with expansion South of the border but would yelp is Austin or San Antonio stole from their following.

The NFL has a lust to expand Internationally into new markets.  Monterrey is over 430 miles further North of Mexico City so it is closer to the US than Mexico City but it would fill a geographic and demographic vacuum.  The potential for a national following is something the NFL would love as Mexico has a population of over 126 million people.

It could lead to a new wave of destination travel that would be popular with the NFL as over 2/3rds of all Super Bowls have been played at or below the 33rd parallel.  The NFL would not have to even commit to a long-term relocation, they could say it is a try-out and give a time frame to prove this experiment could bring in a loyal following and new revenue/fan base/$.

Toronto is a great mention but it has the CFL and they had a fan turnout of, get this, only 127,896 for their entire 2018 season.  Hardly a rabid fan-base.

Would they be able to sign free agents? Most players probably don't want to live in Mexico.
Players are largely motivated by money.

Dollar goes a lot further in Monterrey than US, over 50% more for every dollar.

  • Consumer Prices Including Rent in Monterrey are 51.37% lower than in Buffalo, NY
  • Consumer Prices Including Rent in Monterrey are 54.50% lower than in Dallas, TX
  • Consumer Prices Including Rent in Monterrey are 57.15% lower than in Nashville, TN
  • Consumer Prices Including Rent in Monterrey are 60.61% lower than in Denver, CO
  •  Consumer Prices Including Rent in Monterrey are 62.44% lower than in Chicago, IL
  •  Consumer Prices Including Rent in Monterrey are 63.23% lower than in Miami, FL
  • Consumer Prices Including Rent in Monterrey are 66.22% lower than in Los Angeles, CA
  • Consumer Prices Including Rent in Monterrey are 66.40% lower than in Seattle, WA
  • Consumer Prices Including Rent in Monterrey are 75.01% lower than in New York, NY
Many players choose to go to warmer climates in the off season.

Monterrey's average high temperature in January is 70', the lowest of any month.

For every player hesitant to go to a non-English speaking country their would many attracted to better pay and many would find the climate appealing.

The two-for-one spicy hot tacos down there are amazing. And the food isn't bad either.
Everything is less expensive but amazingly food was the least-best bargain coming in at only bit more than 40% less expensive.

Monterrey would not compete with any existing NFL franchise, it would ensure new viewership that would not overlap with current NFL viewership maps, it has the potential be much larger than anything imagined to potentially open entirely new national market.

The league could sell it as a trial test-run to iron out any issues but I'm sure the league has looked at Mexico if/when they decide to open things up internationally.  I'm sure they've looked into San Antonio and Toronto, etc.

I was just making a joke that if your are 20-something and making NFL money.... the dollar goes a long way when hiring the local "talent". If you are a FA signing his second contract you could probably live the lifestyle of a Russian oligarch for half the year.

For the record I'm on board with you. Having a future franchise in Mexico, Toronto, or Vancouver makes a lot more sense to me than trying to force one team to make ridiculous road trips from either Europe or Asia.

No mexico team on Trumps watch  :scared:
Deafening silence on any Mexican mention by the NFL who are 1%'ers.  Many openly aligned to the current administration.  I wasn't going to be the first to mention the obvious but yeah it is probably the single biggest obstacle.  I have zero interest in politics but am not naive enough to think it doesn't play a huge role with billionaires who have strong political ties.

This is all very well-reasoned, but have you taken into consideration where ICON211 ranks this on his list of things he doesn't care about?

move them back to san dee ####### ego
Not with the spanos family running things. It would be better for the city of San Diego if they got to keep the Chargers name and logo when the spanos family ultimately re-brands the team. Remember, according to the dementia club the only reason la fans aren't embracing the team is because the new logo looked to similar to the Dodgers logo.

I still say instead of moving the team a short drive north they should have moved the team a short drive south to Tijuana. As long as the spanos family is running things the team really should be called the "Donkey Shows". Might be a little too close to the john elway helmet but at this point the chargers would probably see and uptick in merch sales if they were confused with any other team.....

I always said if the chargers were gonna leave SD, they should of gone to Vegas....put the Raiders in LA.....at least Vegas would of adopted the Chargers.....LA is not....team without a home......sad really
I have zero sympathy for the Spanos family. One of, if not the worst ownership in the NFL. I wish them nothing but abject failure in Los Angeles.

Why not move them to NYC?  Then we can start calling the new jersey the giants and new jersey Jets their real names.

Teams named after the actual cities they play in?  That's just crazy talk.
