Amerigo Vespucci: not just along for the ride.Probably should also rename the United States of America as well just to be safe.
I sure did...You had relatives who fought for the Union?
That's cool, seriously, that you know all that. All my people got here after the Civil War, no dog in that hunt except for love of country of course. I do know people with family history enmeshed in Confederate monuments we have here though. It can be an emotional issue.I sure did...
My family tree has been traced back to 1586 in Germany.
We immigrated from Germany to Philadelphia, arrival on Sept 25, 1751 on the Ship, Phoenix
I also had a distant uncle shot in the back and left for dead because he refused to be conscripted by the Confederate Army.
Am I the only one seeing that this isn't going as originally intended so now we're just going full on crazy in order to simply fall back on the "eh...it was a joke" card? I mean, it's a wonderful illustration of the systemic nature of the racism in this country, so I appreciate it being shown even if it's only part of the picture. At one point, it was tough to get guys like Opie to even acknowledge systemic racism was a thing. Reality is, this country was built on a foundation where racism was a pillar. I'm not confident getting rid of the reminders of that is the answer, but I'm glad he's coming around, even if just a little bit.Seem a tad manic, actually.
Totally off topic...That's cool, seriously, that you know all that. All my people got here after the Civil War, no dog in that hunt except for love of country of course. I do know people with family history enmeshed in Confederate monuments we have here though. It can be an emotional issue.
That’s very cool Opie.Totally off topic...
My wife and I did that Ancestry DNA thing a couple of years ago and got the jist of our heritage.
While poking around, I found a site that had been established to trace my last hame.
I typed in my name...and it popped up....EVERYTHING...my DOB...father...my wife...EVERYTHING.
Eventually, I contacted the guy who owned the site and he turned out to be some distant cousin who was a GENEALOGIST...and of course, he had traced his own family which turned out to be MY family.
He sent me all of the information and copies of his documention.
It arrived in two big boxes and it was FASCINATING....
I was VERY lucky in all of this and it makes me very proud to see how my family thrived.
It makes one feel very humble to see what your ancestors went through compared to the little that we have endured.
One thing I did notice was that EVERY SINGLE census that I read, listed the occupation as "Farmer"....until my dad.
I have Cherokee ancestry.I sure did...

Cheekbones?I have Cherokee ancestry.
Nose, actually. For me, anyway.Cheekbones?
....KIDDING!!! KIDDING!! JUST KIDDING!!
That's cool...
My wife is 10% Native American....origins centered in northern NM.
I wish that those with Native American heritage could trace it back better than they can now.
Now THAT would be fascinating!!
...and probably...very sad.
Nose, actually. For me, anyway.
It would be very sad, in a way. However, it does show that people who have it are literally living proof that people of different ethnicities are capable of overcoming their differences and getting along with each other. Very, very well, as it turns out.
Great stuff, Opie, thanks.Totally off topic...

Can we do the southern states next.Looks like @Opie was a couple of weeks ahead of this movement

To be fair...if ALL history is fair game, they are two sides of the same coin Probably don't want to go down that path if you're on a "side" here.Yep.....if all history is fair game, the democratic party has a lot to answer for.knowledge dropper said:Looks like @Opie was a couple of weeks ahead of this movement

Right-wingers thinking they get to tell others how to protest against right-wing ideology.
Oh I'm sure the left will cherry pick who and what they go after, although it is satisfying when they turn on each other. To be fair...if ALL history is fair game, they are two sides of the same coin Probably don't want to go down that path if you're on a "side" here.
Again....not unique to "the left". Personally, I think it's ridiculous to go after history like this. They are focusing on a bye gone era and creating more problems instead trying to focus on the progress that's been made over decades. But, again I think this is all by design. The folks pulling the strings know what they are doing
Ok fine, but tearing it all down for some socialist utopia? I don't think so.Again....not unique to "the left". Two sides of the same coin
As far as "focus on progress", that's going to be a tough sell knowing the things addressed thus far are symptoms of the problem that don't really go after the source of the problem. People seem to be done with that approach. Real change will happen when we get to the core issues. That's what people will want/expect.
Neo Dixiecrats?I have a question - since the current Republican Party is neither "republican" nor tethered ideologically to the Grand Old Party, should it be the party to change its name?
Sorry...I don't understand what this has to do with the post you quotedOk fine, but tearing it all down for some socialist utopia? I don't think so.
What happened in the formation of this country is not unique. People have conquered, and expanded, and had slaves, and so and so forth for all of existence. imo, the intent of the founding fathers was true. The left wants to focus on history by today's norms. It's not that simple. This is mostly an emotional response, not level-headed, well thought out plan.
Two sides of the same coinYAYYYYY corporate cash!!
Ryan Knight @ProudSocialist
BREAKING: @DNC Committee just voted down a measure to reject corporate money & ban corporate lobbyists from serving on the DNC.
The DNC has no desire to make any systemic changes. They keep showing us with every vote that they want to remain a party that works for the Oligarchy.
The most progressive president in the history of the world!YAYYYYY corporate cash!!

I hope this doesn't come out wrong, but you know the reason and it does come from both sides. Why people single out one side and not the other is beyond me.
An effort to convince themselves that their "side" is somehow "different" in a meaningful way? We can't fix the problems unless we acknowledge they exist.I hope this doesn't come out wrong, but you know the reason and it does come from both sides.
It’s actually very easy. One side is unapologetic about its barbarism, proud of it even. It’s like low-hanging fruit in a sense. Everybody sees it plain as day, and the ones who don’t can’t be converted. Why people single out one side and not the other is beyond me.
To be fair....I don't think any (many?) people would say they don't have a side. I think everyone has a side so to speak. Problem that I see is that many are convinced that there are only two sides. The side that is absolutely worst in all of this is the side that believes they are above it all and not actually on a side. If we could ever get those guys in line we might be able to do some stuff.
Good god thank you dude. I don't understand how people don't get this. GOP isn't even worth the breath in my lungs calling out cause they just hold a middle finger right to your face out in the open. We know what they're about. It’s actually very easy. One side is unapologetic about its barbarism, proud of it even. It’s like low-hanging fruit in a sense. Everybody sees it plain as day, and the ones who don’t can’t be converted.
The other one benefits from the literal exact same power structures, but pretends it’s the good guys on the right side of history, with vacant gestures to social justice and identity politics.

But in reality, they enable the other guys. They approve their war budgets, fund their prison camps, hand over extraordinary surveillance powers to Trump, sign off multi-trillion dollar “coronavirus relief” bills that end up going to huge corporations. They let them pack the courts with Trump judges so they could go home early.
In other words, even when we ‘vote out’ the ‘bad guys,’ there will be new ones to take their place. They are not going to change anything. There aren’t enough people that realize the Democratic party is a graveyard too. Total complicity.
It is the same story over and over again, rinse and repeat, every 8/16/20 years. And yet the smartest guys in the room who’ve sworn to save us all from Trump still refuse to see it for what it is.
Storm is a chump...bring it on!!! It doesn't look like it's going to be a big deal. Of course this is just jinxing myself, but as long as we are out of the NE quadrant, usually we are far enough inland not to get impacted. That said, I haven't paid attention either...it could be a cat 4 right now for all I knowI only get two?

- everyone else's
Have a great weekend. I haven't paid attention to news today but hopefully you aren't in the storm's path. Hopefully it works out that no one is.
I suspect they'd do very well in the polls and carry a vast amount of public support. But then they'd get squashed by the corporations and complicit media. The corporate money will ALWAYS win out. This is a very good post.
It would be interesting to see what a legitimate party that supports demilitarization and de-corporitization would actually do in the polls. Commercials work so well in this country I think it would get destroyed personally.
Trump proved thats not true. Corporate money tried to get rid of trump. Hence the never trumpers.Herb said:I suspect they'd do very well in the polls and carry a vast amount of public support. Sucks.
I suppose during his campaign this was true. He was an outsider, an iconoclast. I actually really appreciated the sentiment behind his campaign and election. Fresh blood, someone that doesn't have the slime attached to them from decades in the DC bubble. If it had been someone other than Trump I would have considered voting for that concept.Trump proved thats not true. Corporate money tried to get rid of trump. Hence the never trumpers.
He also was extremely well known outside of politics and had a powerful platform in Twitter so he could sidestep the media.Trump proved thats not true. Corporate money tried to get rid of trump. Hence the never trumpers.
Seems like circular logic. Given the money in politics with respect to the candidates, his winning just means that there was more corporate money on his side than not, right? So I'm not sure if you have some other definition of "proof" but it doesn't seem to fit in that sentence...at least with the evidence you offer up here.Trump proved thats not true. Corporate money tried to get rid of trump. Hence the never trumpers.
