Titanic headcases (1 Viewer)

I was a big Oilers fan back in the day but stopped following the Titans after McNair (RIP) retired. The team that Fisher created was always one that had a blue-collar underdog mentality, and easy to root for.

But what's with all the characters that have been through Nashville as of late? Haynesworth, Young, Pacman, Lendale, Britt... Was it coaching? No leaders on the team? Too many gambles on "character issue" guys? Something in the water? Or just plain bad luck?

I am a big Titans fan and my opinion is they ignored the general character concerns that were going on with these players and took the word of a few individuals that had close ties to the organization. The result is a reverse scenario whereby digging too deep actually hurt the team. Where there is smoke there is usually fire and if you had enough conversations about any player, someone would eventually vouch for them. For example, the son of a member of the Titans organization went to West Virginia and said PacMan was okay...even though there were red flags all over the place. Same types of things happened with Britt, Haynesworth and Lendale. Vince was a totally different story. Difficult to predict how someone handles pressure, criticism and fame. The big thing here they missed on was how hard he would work to get better and would he be first guy in last guy out of the facility. Texas kept changing or simplifying their offense to fit him(not a bad strategy in college) rather than Vince stepping up to dissect the playbook.

I think this change in philosophy is driven from the minds within. I am not that familiar with the Titans organization, but do know that Fischer and Adams were in Houston (no clue about the GM and/or Player Director), so I am guessing it is a GM issue, OR (more likely) and organizational change in philosophy to do what it takes to win.

As a Jets fan, I always actually found it odd that more players did not get in trouble in NY when the spotlight (and gossip papers) are so intense during the 90s and the early 2000s. Tannenbaum has been with the organization (in some capacity) a while and when he stepped up into a GM role, he made a decision to take more chances (Edwards, Holmes and Cromartie in a one year period). I think it has worked out fine (I believe there is just one offense among the three at this point and it was a misdemeanor), but even Tannenbaum did not make these decisions alone. When he was offered Holmes, he pulled Ryan out of a meeting to see whether he should pull the trigger. I am 99% sure it had less to do with "should a trade a 5th rounder for a SB MVP" and more so with "can we control this guy"? No one is sure how this agressive stance will pan out in the future, but I do believe there are staff who are better equipped to deal with people like this. Personally, I am wired more like Fischer...I would let it brew and then have an "F'it, you are gone attitude". Rex Ryan I am sure has a different philosophy and probably lends itself better when dealing with troubled players.
