We're sorta getting a mess here.

Mangini interviewed for DC spot and here's what happened next, in summary-

Munchak hired, Heimerdinger and McGinnis also interviewed. Former Falcs coach Mora expressed he'd take the job if offered but wouldn't say more having some close friends with the Titans.

Asst Head coach and LB coach McGinnis' status is somewhat unknown right now. He's a former HC in the NFL with the Cards. Just two years ago the Titans refused the Packers permission to interview him and didn't want to lose him.

I think that's all.

From MSNBC: Owner Bud Adams has given coach Mike Munchack a blank check to fill out his coaching staff

There's several articles on Gray

http://www.tennessean.com/article/20110212...ews|text|Sports

It seems he turned them down, made an announcement to U of Texas people that he wasn't leaving and Munchak has convinced him to come chat with him anyway and is sorta not taking no for an answer. Wyatt's article says that Gray told people close to him that he is interested in the DC job so there's a whole lot of confusing info out there on Gray.

Umm feel free to comment? Little thrown by it, I was just trying to group it altogether is all.

Young still gone, forgot to mention earlier. If you thought he had anything to do with coaching stuff

ChicagoBreakingSports.com seems to think it's possible Bears follow Jets lead with Callahan and block Munchak's request to interview Tice.

Thanks for posting these...If Munchak doesn't get Tice, I'm sure there is another OLine coach out there. I mean a whole team with OLine coaches, that would be awesome.I just hope he has this staff together before the combine.

Yeah there's gotta be a point where there's too many OL coaches doesn't there? Well I mean maybe not if it's Joe Bugel and some others with other experiences but...It was Tice that started that Randy ratio stuff right? What was that again? Run alot but we have to have X number of throws to Randy to win, right?I wonder if Moss would stay. I wonder how truly different that is from their approach to games where Britt was hot. Minny did use the TE a bunch in the passing game and so do the Titans. Wasn't Tice the one that adored 'Sasser and moved him from FB/TE a ton? If he did bring Olin with him (so to speak) good luck to NFL Ds trying to stop CJ.

I don't know if this is true. I came across the story a few days ago and can't find it. Maybe someone can verify. Outside the stadium they had huge wall murals of different players. Since they're done with Vince, they decided to take his down. While they were at it, they took a few others down including Bruce Matthews who was hired a few weeks later to coach.

If true it's not a big deal or anything, just sorta odd how it worked out for Matthews.

Chris Palmer named OC...

Certainly not an inspired choice, but maybe a steady-as-she-goes choice for a first year head coach?

Reading this guys bio, he has coached everywhere. I'm kinda meh about it, but hunting for a coach this time of year is not ideal. I would like to learn more on Palmers philosophies.

Palmer had a reputation awhile back as a "QB Guru", and that went quickly out the door after a long period of very uninspired time as a HC and OC.

(I'm guessing bec this was a long time ago)I think Palmer was the guy BP picked to groom young Drew Bledsoe-who was impressive for a young QB.

Palmer was the head coach of the Browns when they were an expansion team and he really didn't have a chance of winning.

Tim Couch was pretty good looking as a rook and Kevin Johnson was a solid looking WR. KJ was truly small and was exposed for not having much else other than a deep game while Couch got shell-shocked from 10k hits. Not coincidentally, David Carr would go through a similar routine.

All three of these QBs were very good rookies (arguably the best in that draft) with promising futures. Carr and Couch (all but) ended their careers by taking a zillion sacks. Bledsoe handled it better, but still made plenty of dunderhead decisions throughout his career feeling a phantom rush.

One could say Palmer got it together with his next project, Eli Manning who was a real horrible rookie. IIRC the joke was his brother had several games with more TDs than Eli had in a (half) season. Eli either was 1-7 or 0-8....it was brutal and I posted a thread here a couple months back with how the Ravens admitted to just flat out toying with him pointing to their jersey numbers and baiting the rook as he couldn't break down their D.

(I'm not sure but I thought he was with Brunell somewhere in here)

Palmer made a good looking O that was sometimes impressive. He did develop young QBs very well. They got the snot beat out of them and either every GM gave him horrible OLs or his offenses used the OL terribly. The sack totals are oh so disturbing.

Eli had a good OL. BP used old veterans as bandaids to his OL under Bledsoe, but Drew got some protection.

For the Titans, I'm not worried about the OL one bit. Pretty sure everyone can agree with that sentiment the way their staff is being built and the pre-existing players. So I think it brings it all back to wondering if Palmer is good so long as there's a good OL.

Every one of these QBs looked good when they were under Palmer. Plenty of respected NFL people thought he had a promising future and didn't blink when he became the Browns coach.

It's an interesting choice. He's clearly the third choice after Callahan and Tice, but I like him moreso.

If there was any doubt about them drafting a QB, that's gotta be gone.

Munchak seemed to politely diss Heimerdinger's offense but there's no way with he as the coach, with that line and with CJ, that they don't run a lot. I don't expect that aspect to change one bit regardless whom was hired.

from NFL.com via AP

"As a teacher, you are graded by how many kids pass your exam, and as coach, you are graded by how many games you win," Palmer said at his introductory news conference Friday.

Palmer's first pupil likely will be a quarterback, as part of his responsibility will be to develop whatever signal-caller the Titans obtain this offseason. The team plans to release or trade Vince Young this offseason, Kerry Collins' contract expires March 3, and only Rusty Smith will be left on the roster. Tennessee plans to draft a quarterback and possibly trade for a veteran.

New Titans coach Mike Munchak said he brought in two or three coordinator candidates and decided on Palmer as the replacement for Mike Heimerdinger. Munchak fired Heimerdinger one day after being promoted himself on Feb. 8.

"It's my job as head coach to figure out what our needs are," Munchak said. "For the offensive coordinator position, I sat down and thought about exactly what we needed as an offense and thought about some of that criteria. When Chris and I finished our interview with Chris, I knew I had my guy."

Palmer, 61, has been in professional football for more than 20 years. He was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and, most recently, the head coach of the UFL's Hartford Colonials. When he was with Cleveland, he tried to lure Munchak to join him.

Palmer also added another staff member Friday as the Titans announced a couple hours after introducing Palmer that they had hired veteran running backs coach Jim Skipper. He had been with the Carolina Panthers for the past nine seasons.

Munchak said he likes Palmer's attention to detail, something that can benefit the Titans.

"He had exactly what I was looking for. Again, I love his demeanor and his approach to the game," Munchak said. "He's confident, he's calm and he's very consistent. I think the players will feed off that. He dots the I's and crosses the T's, and I think that's exactly what we need here."

Palmer's experience working with quarterbacks includes successes such as Eli Manning, Mark Brunell and Tony Romo and struggles with expansions teams in Cleveland (as head coach) and Houston (as offensive coordinator), where the careers of Tim Couch and David Carr, respectively, both failed to launch.

"You've got to have people around him," Palmer said. "It still is a team sport, and you have to have 11 guys that fit in and do those things. You look for characteristics of players.

"One of the problems with a young quarterback is you don't know if the game is going to be too big for him. You don't know when they get that money how they're going to react, and that's not just the quarterback, that's any player. But you try to do your work on a guy. You try to find out what it's all about. You really want a football guy."

Palmer is excited about other Titans such as running back Chris Johnson, wide receiver Kenny Britt and tight end Jared Cook. Palmer can't wait to learn about them.

"I'm anxious to talk to those guys and see what their forte is and how good they are at doing certain things," Palmer said. "I was impressed with the tight ends. The Cook guy, I want to get my hands around him right away and find out what he's all about because I think he's a special talent. And the thing that I liked was the offensive line."

As for Johnson, Palmer wants him to keep improving. Johnson dipped to 1,364 rushing yards this season after becoming the sixth man in NFL history to run for 2,000 yards in a season in 2009.

"We are going to try to make him better than he was last year," Palmer said. "That is what coaching is all about."

From Wyatt, Tennesseean

The Titans are on the verge of adding longtime offensive line coach Art Valero to the team's coaching staff.

Valero, who spent last season with the Seahawks, would assist Bruce Matthews, who was hired as offensive line coach for the Titans last week.

Coach Mike Munchak and Valero could not be reached for comment Sunday night.

Valero interviewed for the position with the Titans last week. Indications are Munchak is interested in having a veteran coach work alongside Matthews in his first year on the job. Matthews previously worked as an offensive assistant with the Houston Texans.

Valero has 23 seasons of experience as an offensive line coach.

Prior to joining the Seahawks, he was assistant head coach/running backs coach with the Rams in 2008 before moving to assistant offensive line coach in 2009. While with the Rams, running back Steven Jackson became the first back in Rams history to rush for 1,000 yards in five consecutive seasons (2005-09). Valero also spent six seasons (2002-07) with the Buccaneers, coaching running backs from 2004-07 and working with tight ends for the Bucs for two seasons (2002-03).

Valero joined Tampa Bay after four seasons (1998-2001) as assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Louisville. He also worked at Utah State, Idaho and Boise State, his alma mater.

Munchak is still looking to add a receivers coach. He said on Saturday there could also be some shuffling with his coaching staff in the secondary when asked about the future of secondary coach Marcus Robertson.

As TitanInsider's Tipsheet first reported this afternoon, Tim Hauck is out as the Tennessee Titans assistant secondary coach.

Hauck spent two seasons in Tennessee and came on board in part through a connection with former coach Jeff Fisher, whose son Brandon played for Hauck's brother Bobby at the University of Montana.

Hauck had spent time at UCLA as a coach before joining the Titans and was instrumental in helping them to bring Alterraun Verner on board with a recommendation last year.

There had been speculation that Hauck might survive instead of Marcus Robertson. Instead, the Titans are now searching for someone to help out coaching safeties and in the nickel package.

University of Kentucky co-defensive coordinator Steve Brown is a possible candidate, and though he is under contract with the Washington Redskins, former Titans safety Steve Jackson has close ties to defensive coordinator Jerry Gray.

I wonder if Munchak can find an old OL coach for the WR coach position?
Nope and this one is shocking to me:http://ten.247sports.com/Article/Titans-hire-Ragone-as-new-receivers-coach-15974Mike Munchak has filled the final vacancy on the Tennessee Titans coaching staff by hiring former University of Louisville quarterback Dave Ragone to coach wide receivers, according to sources. Ragone served under new Titans offensive coordinator Chris Palmer as quarterbacks coach with the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League. Ragone and Palmer go back to their days with the Houston Texans, when Ragone was a backup quarterback for three seasons from 2003 to 2005 while Palmer was offensive coordinator there.

I remember Dave Ragone. I remember wanting him to get more of a shot.

In NFLE he was excellent and his accuracy was so super high-I want to guess 75%. He had been fairly accurate in a preseason game or two (yep, playing against scrubs) and I felt like- here's a guy that has excelled at a level just beneath the NFL. The starting QB is struggling, put him in. Most young QBs are not accurate, most vets struggle to get such a high percentage, he's gotta have a leg up in his understanding of the game.

IIRC Carr got hurt, he played three games, got sacked a hundred times and that was it. He was done so quickly after that.

I find the notion of him coaching the young WRs interesting especially since Palmer seems to have seen something he likes in him. I can't imagine being Moss though. If he returns (and everyone is curiously silent on the topic) how is Ragone going to tell him how he can improve? What could he say that Moss wouldn't already know?

Relative to anything I've read previously, Moss has been an exceptional individual with the Titans. I have a hard time believing that would continue with Ragone barking orders at him.

From Wyatt's blog

The Titans are set to add Chet Parlavecchio as an assistant coach on Mike Munchak’s staff.

Parlavecchio is expected to be an assistant linebackers coach with the Titans who could also assist with special teams.

Parlevecchio, teammates with Munchak at Penn State, was a 1982 sixth round draft pick by the Green Bay Packers and also played for the St. Louis Cardinals before a knee injury forced him to end his playing career in 1984.

Parlavecchio has been a high school coach since 1986, most recently served as head coach at Elizabeth High School in New Jersey.

The New York Giants named Parlavecchio as the "Lou Rettino High School Football Coach of the Year" in 2006.

Jim Wyatt Tennessean:

Titans Coach Mike Munchak finalized his coaching staff Friday by hiring Curtis Fuller as assistant secondary coach and Charles London as offensive assistant/quality control.

Fuller spent the past two seasons with the Packers as a special teams assistant in 2009 and the coaching administrator last year. He was a special teams assistant with the Raiders in 2007 and worked in the Cowboys scouting department in 2006.

The former Seahawks, Packers and Panthers safety replaces Tim Hauck.

London was a pro scout with the Eagles last season after three years (2007-09) as an offensive assistant with the Bears. He also coached three years (2004-06) at his alma mater, Duke. He replaces Richie Wessman.

"It was an extensive process to put the staff together, but I like the structure — there is a good mix of veteran coaches and younger coaches," Munchak said. "I believe they are all good teachers, have a passion for football and have been a part of successful organizations."
